I ranked "Starry Eyes" at #19 & I still think I underranked it, I’ve heard it many times but for most people it’s such a hidden gem

This is obviously one of those songs I pushed into the top 10, and since I'm pretty sure you all killed of my sexually charged stuttering classic, I'm hoping this is a Doobie Brothers or Supertramp classic

Don't Bring Me Down - Electric Light Orchestra Incredible. The best chance we have of scoring ELO in the top 10 and we blow it. Anyway, I love my Drum intros. So was Bruce and why does he let let him down?

That top 10 is pretty awesome. I'm pretty sure all those made my top 40. Even that Supertramp song is pretty rad. Top 10 worthy? No way, but their best by a landslide. I still have my #1 and two of my top 5's in the running, so I can sit back and relax.

I'm glad we didn't let past artist performance influence our rankings here, because the last time we encountered a Nick Lowe song, it finished #97 Supertramp's history was also pretty poor up to this point. Also ecstatic that "Dreaming" survived--I thought being the less popular Blondie song in this list was going to hurt it more

Second quick -but long- catch-up from me with songs where my ranking differed the most from this ranking 59 I’ll Supply the Love (25): This was a hit in Peru, and probably one of the most musically interesting of their popular songs. I like the combination of prog, rock, and even disco/dance elements. Hope their other song doesn’t appear any time soon. 58 Bad Case of Loving You (22): I guess it’s time for my 20s to leave a good strong rocker. I remember hearing this song quite a bit in the early 80s, but not knowing who was the singer. It was only in the 90s when I learned it was the same guy from Addicted to Love and Some like it hot (through Power Station of course). 55 Every Time I Think of You (30): Another strong classic rock with some 60s flavor (thanks to those backing vocals). I rediscovered it only a few years ago, but I remember hearing it in the 80s. 53 North Sea Oil (80): I didn’t like this music back in the 80s, but I’ve grown to appreciate it with time. This was good enough but its weird melodic changes, random flute included, hindered me from ranking it higher. Preferred Styx’s kinda weirdness in this list. 52 In the City (83): this was a first listen that didn’t grab my attention much. It sounded promising but ended up a bit monotonous to me. Maybe I needed a few more listens. 50 Dr Music (76): I like the instrumental, but the main melody sounded a bit too generic, almost as if it were created for a TV series or commercial. 49 Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? (26): this may be his most played and popular song back home. A huge hit in the 70s and one of the biggest hits in the 1900s lists. I really liked it as a kid, and I still do as an adult. Including because the main chorus melody borrows from Brazilian classic Taj Mahal. Overall I love the melody and instrumental, but I admit this only had a few rock elements —that’s the main reason I couldn’t rank it in my top quarter. (I even liked the 90s remake by N Trance and Rod, but that’s not a rock story). 43 Chuck E’s in Love (92): sorry but I never liked this one. Too boring and without much oomph. I much preferred Linda Ronstadt’s song -which I ranked at 78. 42 You're Gonna Get What's Coming (61): I initially had this in my 90s because it sounded a bit too poppy in my first listen. With every listen I liked it more, though, and I dug the vibe. Great melody and vocal attitude. 41 Superman (58): Pretty good discovery to me. Liked the cool disco rock combo. Maybe a few more listens could’ve convinced me to rank it in my top half. 39 My, My, Hey Hey (99): Did he really chart with two versions of the same song in the same year? :o I had never heard it before this rankdown, but I didn’t think it was this amazing unique song to be charting twice. And I’m utterly surprised both versions are in the top 40. This was the most forgettable version. Too much of a background filler to me. 35 Accidents Will Happen (91): Another discovery that I wasn’t a fan of. I appreciated what he was going for in terms of unconventional song structure and melody, but some of the melodic changes were just rough, and his flat, off key vocals didn’t help either. 33 Goodnight Tonight (4): Awww… I was hoping this could make it higher. This song comes with a lot of great and important memories to me. It was the main theme of a one-hour TV show that played music videos Monday to Friday from late 1979 to 1985: “Disco Club”. It was a classic for kids like me who wanted to catch up with music and videos in Peru. We’ve been told it was the first show of that kind in Latin America, and maybe even amongst the first ones globally (?!). Regardless, it was a great show with a knowledge rock musician who played all types of pop-rock music mostly in English youtu.be/v38GEZ2wcsMThe song itself was also a big hit on its own back home. Great melody, with cool instrumental and even some sound effects :) and as someone posted, that musical bridge is amazing, especially full of Latin flavor. My favorite Paul McCartney song outside the Beatles. I know it’s a bit pop, but it had enough rock elements for me to keep it high. 32 Fire (71): This is a nice pop / r&b song, but like the Doobie Brothers it didn’t fit this list that well to me, especially with so many strong rocker songs. Also, it’s not in my top 5 PS songs anyway. 27 Is She Really Going Out With Him? (57): Nice tune, with a bit rougher but effective vocals by Joe. Good discovery but I still prefer a handful other songs by him. 26 Hey Hey, My My (74): The instrumental was miles better than the other version, and that was its own strength to me. The chorus and overall melody was too weak for me to rank it higher. Although if I had only had to rank one version I could’ve ranked it a tad higher. 25 My Sharona (9): Another big hit of my childhood that receives good recurrent airplay. I still have the 45 RPM too. Great instrumental and melody that still sound cool to me. 24 My Life (14) / 23 All My Love (10): Not big differences with my ranking, but just wanted to say that these two were also huge hits in Peru, and like My Sharona have received great recurrent airplay, and are amongst my favorite songs of the decade, attached to great memories. 22 Starry Eyes (34): One of my 5 favorite discoveries in this rankdown. Love the melody, vibe, vocals. The type of melodic pop-rock that I dig. 21 Highway to Hell (15): I wasn’t into heavy metal bands, so I only learned about this in the 90s and I dug it. Solid classic song.

-Any songs surprise you in making it this far? Dreaming and Hold the Line are good surprises, but then...
-What songs are you disappointed about missing the the top ten? None really, knowing how much other people are not fond of disco like me, and I knew I'd be the only one who ranked Babe and South Wind in their top 10.
-Care to predict how this top ten plays out? I would like it if the Doobies, Heart of Glass, (those 2 I definitely hear disco influences) or Cheap Trick takes it all.

25. My Sharona - The KnackThe biggest underdog considering what I know about my fellow rockers on PULSE has to be this classic. I dreaded every number after #99 to be this song. I have been pleasantly surprised ,and ecstatic to say that PULSE loves sex charged songs after all. As far as the song itself. It's surely one of my favorite in the entire galaxy. From the drum intro to the mean bassline, to Doug's vocals, and that solo. I bet my life half of the high ranks were based on that solo alone. It's mind blowing massive how coordinated and powerful it is. This was also the #1 song of 1979 as far as the pop world was concerned. The best part for me are the lyrics, because they are about a chick, but what I love about these lyrics is that after the 100th time singing along I actually think of "My Sharona" as My very own Sharona. That's the power of these lyrics. At #25 it has been robbed of it's rightful place, but I'll take it and consider it a win for sexy songs about chicks. 24. My Life - Billy JoelI've come to love this song more through the years, but it ain't no "You May Be Right" or "We Didn't Start The Fire". 23. All My Love - Led ZeppelinI always thought this was a huge top 10 hit for the band on pop. This is why I thought that David Coverdale was in this band. This song is like a perfect Whitesnake powerballad, which I'm sure inspired Whitesnake to write those amazing Powerballads. 22. Starry Eyes - The RecordsThis was first time listen in a list full of my favorite all time rock songs. Had a lot of Brit pop vibes like The Knack's "Good Girls Don't. Look at all those top 10's. I wonder what stations some of you listen to to be so familiar with this song, because I never have heard it on the radio. 21. Highway to Hell - AC/DCHere is another one I gotta give PULSE credit for. I never thought it would get passed #30, but here we are one shy from the Top 20 with one of the best guitar hooks ever written. That #94 rank. Is that that member who said AC/DC is Devil music? 20. Goodbye Stranger - SupertrampI like two Supertramp songs. The one we got into the top 10 and "Take The Long Way Home"...and that is all she wrote. 19. Flirtin' with Disaster - Molly HatchetLittle bit of Southern Fire. There is always that one song by that one band I enjoy. This is the one from Molly Hatchet that gets my heart pumping double time. Such a mean one to Air Guitar too as well. 18. The Devil Went Down to Georgia - The Charlie Daniels BandThis is also the only song I like from Charlie and the boys. The story telling here is one of the best song lyrics ever written. This is also the best use of Violins in rock music. I always thought the part with the violins was speeded up. man they played that fast. The band also captures both styles of what Johnny and The Devil's music would sound like. I still like The Devil's part better. This is also the song that got Nickelback back on my music charts with their version of it. 17. Dance Away - Roxy MusicThis was alright. Got some Spandau Ballet new Romantic vibes, but this isn't one of my top songs of 1979. I'm guessing this band has established themselves on mainstream before 1979 to get this song played on the format. I would have guessed this would have been huge in the Discos.

-Any songs surprise you in making it this far?
Thrilled to see Cheap Trick and Blondie's Dreaming make the Top 10. (Would be floored to see Dreaming beat HoG). Surprised to see Toto and the Doobies make the Top 10, particularly over the Talking Heads.
-What songs are you disappointed about missing the the top ten?
I love me some ELO, but I know that they (and particularly DBMD) are an acquired taste. #11 isn't a godawful ranking, but that is one fine song we left outside the door. Was a bit stunned that the second Cars single didn't make the top 10.
-Care to predict how this top ten plays out?
This is a big ole guess: 10 Supertramp - The Logical Song 9 Toto - Hold the Line 8 The Doobie Brothers - What a Fool Believes 7 Cheap Trick - I Want You to Want Me (Live at Budokan) 6 Blondie - Dreaming 5 Nick Lowe - Cruel to Be Kind 4 The Police - Message In a Bottle 3 Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing 2 The Cars - Let's Go 1 Blondie - Heart of Glass
That's my guess. HoG is not my personal #1 (which is still in the hunt, but I don't see going all the way). Any of these (but one) could win and I'd be happy, this is a solid top 10. The Records and Starry Eyes hitting #22 was reward enough for me.

And now here's a song from the English singer-songwriter and original member of the folk band Fairport Convention. It's a cover of the song first recorded by Terence Boylan in 1977. Peaking at #13 on the Hot 100, the song did well enough to make the 1979 Hot 100 year-end list. EXTRA

Honestly, I prefer those ELO and George Thorogood songs above the ones that made it in. Nothing against "Don't Bring Me Down," but I feel like "Shine a Little Love," disco pandering as it is, is a better showcase of what the band was about.

Agree wholeheartedly, Shine a Little Love is more classic ELO, still with a slight disco feel to it. Of the extras I have a huge unexplainable affinity for Blue Morning, Blue Day and that would have easily made my Top 20. The Thorogood, Smith, and Matthew tunes were all good too.

Blue Morning, Blue Day is a song I feel is forgotten amongst Foreigner's singles because I never hear it out in the wild like I do their other songs. Quite the banger imo

"Blue Morning, Blue Day" blows away "Dirty White Boy". "Double Vision" is my Foreigner crown song.
"Shine a Little Love" is such a classic. Xanadu soundtrack worthy. I love both this one and "Don't Bring Me Down" at the same level. I might have done a toss up to see which one I would have slotted in my top 10.
