Neko Case would've been a good choice for Canadian country I think (on that note, kind of surprised no New Pornographers showed up) Yeah, I've always liked the New Pornographers over other bands that emerged in the 2000s like BSS and Metric. They definitely had some potential 10/10s to choose from.

damn Tay, that's two rounds in a row that you've betrayed team Yabby Barrett now ): To be fair, we don’t know (unless we can accurately guess) who sent what until the elimination happens, but hey! At least you’re still in this! ;) Not Tay tanking the closest to country Hey now, just cause I’m “the country judge” doesn’t mean country gets an automatic 10 from me, lol. I’m sad recordyear has left because I’ve easily been able to tell what he has sent and he was sending great stuff, but his pick this round just didn’t grab me all that well. The production—while pretty nice—felt like it plodded along and didn’t take the song anywhere, and I did NOT like those vocals at all. </3 Also, I didn’t leave any comments because the deadline was approaching and it was late at night and I needed to go to bed lmao

Neko Case would've been a good choice for Canadian country I think (on that note, kind of surprised no New Pornographers showed up) Neko Case is American. Probably I should have selected Canadian country women like Lindi Ortega or k.d. lang, but I don't know how would the judges feel about them. EDIT: Nope for k.d. lang because she has one Hot 100 hit.

HAMED Grimes - "Oblivion"
Tay: (5.5) Max: "I'm not really feeling this but I can't really put my finger on why... It sounds like she's trying too hard to be original or different? Idk. It kind of sounds amateurish, especially in comparison to her other song in this round. :/" (5.1) Shooter: "Never been a fan of this." (4.0) MAYMAN! Grimes - "Realiti"
Shooter: "This is a more listenable bop from her." (5.0)
Tasteless

Jokes aside, I knew Oblivion was risky af since it's very polarizing but I still stand by it. The way Grimes manages to perfectly juxtapose the darkness of the lyrics being about sexual assault and paranoia to her light innocent voice but still creating this eerie atmosphere. "See you on a dark night" alone just gives me chills, the song's unnerving nature is exhilarating and frightening.
It's one of the few songs that actually evokes these kinds of feelings for me and it's why it's one of my favorite songs of all time so I just had to send it lol regardless of the risk factor.

I gave Lindi's first four albums 5/5 when I used to have my reviews website (I didn't get to review her fifth album because I eventually got lazy, hence why my website is no more, but I did just buy it on vinyl this past weekend ironically enough). Lindi is IT when it comes to country - and she sounds just as good live.

Before y'all see my flop scores, let me say I would have sent this. I think Cydonia counts as a location name, no? Also even though this will break the character, the song is western inspired so I guess the brand is still somewhat there?

I am going to take this opportunity to promote Yukika once again because it fits the theme:
Also "Soul Lady" might fit this theme too since technically the Korean title is "Seoul Lady"!
Yes, we stan Yukika in these neck of the woods.

== ROUND 4 - RESULTS ==Welcome to the fourth elimination ceremony. Please welcome recordyear into the judging room, as the latest contestant to get eliminated. Also we have also invited another person to guest judge this round, everyone welcome Fire!
There's a tie for #1 this week! However, I'm going to have to break the tie with the highest individual score. The FCO of this round is…
WILLAPTED!Fleet Foxes - "Mykonos"
Congrats for your first FCO of the season! You received 2 perfect scores from the judges which pushed you ahead of the runner-up. Keep it up!
MoD: "Damn this is probably already my favorite Fleet Foxes song just on my first listen. Great melodies and harmonies, and great instrumental as well, love its steady and captivating rhythm." (9.0) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (10) Leaf: "This was not even on my radar when the theme was decided on so it was a nice surprise to see it on the list! The switch-up halfway through the song is everything." (10) Tay: This has got a nice little groove to it!" (8.6) Max: "I really liked "White Winder Hymnal" when it came out. This is much less of a folk sing-along but still sounds like it's from around that time. I liked it!" (7.8) Recordyear: "At least it is a more straight-forward song from this group." (7.1) Fire: (7.0) TOTAL: 59.5 | AVERAGE: 8.5
The second best is…
JAMES!Foals - "London Thunder"
Great job at pleasing everyone! You missed the FCO by the skin of your teeth. Keep it up!
MoD: "Cool song as most of their stuff, but I kept waiting for like a bigger climax." (8.0) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (8.9) Leaf: "This was initially one of my favourites from the album and I had the whole album on repeat for a while. This will sound so random but this song in particular gives me vivid memories of going out in the cold after freezing rain had coated everything in ice, lol. For me, that actually helped to contribute to the gloomy vibe of the song which was what pulled me in originally." (9.1) Tay: "Everything about this one was just lovely!!!" (10) Max: "I quite like this!" 8.5 Recordyear: "I was waiting for something more explosive. This slow burn track doesn't really pay off, but the atmospheric process is great." (7.0) Fire: (8.0) TOTAL: 59.5 | AVERAGE: 8.5
The third best is…
FILTHY!OutKast - "B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)"
You've shown a very consistent performance thus far. Keep it up!
MoD: "Amazing production, amazing flows, amazing song. The lyricism is on another level too, and what a beat my god." (10) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (9.1) Leaf: "The fast pace and beat are great, among other elements. My least favourite part is just the choir vocals in the choruses, but it doesn't really take away from the song." (8.1) Tay: (6.8) Max: "This has never been a go-to song for me, Outkast or in general, but I can't deny it's a good song!" (8.1) Recordyear: "Great flow and very fun instrumentals. Got the nice guitar out of this group." (8.1) Fire: (9.0) TOTAL: 59.2 | AVERAGE: 8.46
Next…
BENOWhite Lies - "Tokyo"
MoD: "Really nice verses but the chorus feels kind of underwhelming imo, like they tried to make it triumphant but couldn't quite get it, but had the potential to. They have much better." (7.2) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (8.7) Leaf: "For some reason, I never really liked when lyrics would just list off a bunch of place names, but I recently became obsessed with this despite that. I love the blend of rock and synthpop, and how it manages to have a sort of epic sound (to me, at least) without being too in-your-face—not that that's automatically bad." (9.6) Tay: (9.6) Max: "The start of the chorus on this reminds me of "Battlefield" by Jordin Sparks. The rest of the song kind of sounds like lite-80s. It's cool." (7.7) Recordyear: "That synth reminds me of a certain song but I cannot remember it." (6.3) Fire: (8.0) TOTAL: 57.1 | AVERAGE: 8.16
Next…
LYHOMFoals - "Spanish Sahara"
MoD: "Really solid song, though it does drag a little bit in my opinion." (8.7) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (7.3) Leaf: "Man. Chills basically every time." (10) Tay: (7.9) Max: "I usually like songs that gradually build up but this one didn't really catch me - not as much as their other song in this week's lineup. I do like the build-up tho." (7.0) Recordyear: "Another slow burn-like track but it turned more uptempo quickly and I feel rewarded." (7.9) Fire: (7.0) TOTAL: 55.8 | AVERAGE: 7.97
Next…
GPBleu Toucan - "Hanoï café"
MoD: "Oooh really groovy, very enjoyable track." (8.2) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (6.8) Leaf: "This was a neat, chill jam." (7.9) Tay: "This is some damn good elevator music!!! The vocals are a bit to wrap yourself around, but I’m a hoe for saxophones in music, as I played one for seven years in middle & high school." (9.5) Max: "The intro piano of this reminds me of Rollin by Calvin Harris (which I love). Actually, other elements of the song reminds me of it too. I do quite like the sound of this one too!" (8.8) Recordyear: "This is decently groovy. Lead vocal sounds like Kevin Parker a bit." (6.2) Fire: (7.0) TOTAL: 54.4 | AVERAGE: 7.77
Next…
TRILOGYBeirut - "Nantes"
MoD: "What a great instrumental, kind of flamenco-esque, love that, and also his vocals are beautiful." (8.7) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (7.8) Leaf: "Beirut always manage to make me feel like I'm out at sea while listening to their songs, which I kinda love." (8.3) Tay: "This was nice, probably not a revisit, but it was nice!" (7.8) Max: "This song is oddly alluring in a similar way that something like Tesselate is - but where that song is kind of menacing, this one is more homey feeling." (8.7) Recordyear: "Really wished to like this more but the vocals are not my type." (5.9) Fire: (7.0) TOTAL: 54.2 | AVERAGE: 7.74
Next…
GATESR.E.M. - "Radio Free Europe"
MoD: "Oh this just really clicked now lmao. R.E.M. seemed to write great hooks so easily man." (9.0) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (8.8) Leaf: "I prefer early-to-mid-90s R.E.M., although this is definitely not a bad single to start your career with (well, it was rerecorded but y'know)." (7.5) Tay: (7.3) Max: "I haven't explored a ton of early REM but this is one of the few songs I do kind of know. It's never really been a standout for me though." (7.0) Recordyear: "This is my general taste. It's just not good enough to rate this higher." (7.2) Fire: (7.0) TOTAL: 53.8 | AVERAGE: 7.69
Next…
SAMOABBA - "Waterloo"
MoD: "Better than the average ABBA song? Definetely, but that's not saying much. Catchy but still obnoxious through some parts." (5.0) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (7.9) Leaf: "I feel the same about this as I do about most of their other songs I know—decent, probably wouldn't change the station on them, but I've never wanted to go out of my way to listen to them." (6.6) Tay: "You just can’t go wrong with the legendary ABBA!!!" (10) Max: "I'm so late on the ABBA train! I saw a production of Mamma Mia the musical a few years ago three times and it singlehandedly won me over to the greatness of ABBA songs. I soon bought ABBA Gold on vinyl. Waterloo isn't on it so I'm less in tune with this song than most of the hits on that compilation but it's ABBA!" (9.0) Recordyear: "I am mostly not a huge ABBA fan and this song is no exception. It got a solid groove but nothing else. The harmony doesn't really stand out. The lyrics are not particularly interesting either. Really puzzled at why this song becomes a classic." (5.8) Fire: (8.0) TOTAL: 52.3 | AVERAGE: 7.47
Next…
HAMEDDavid Bowie - "China Girl"
MoD: "Enjoyable song but it didn't really grab me." (6 0) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (6.8) Leaf: "Honestly not really well-versed in David Bowie's discography, but sonically this would probably end up being one of my faves." (7.8) Tay: (7.8) Max: "I'm not experienced enough with Bowie to know whether this song is loved or "meh" among longtime Bowie fans. Do they consider Let's Dance a sell-out album? The singles from it are more plain than most of his stuff, but they all did fairly well from what I remember. Anyway, I've always liked China Girl. Not a favourite by any means but it's a good tune." (7.9) Recordyear: "The "Chinese" riff is nicely done, and the lyrics are interesting (especially as an Asian), but I am mid towards the backbone 80s beat. It could use a bit more variety." (7.2) Fire: (7.0) TOTAL: 50.5 | AVERAGE: 7.21
The last name to escape the bottom two is…
MAYMANNeutral Milk Hotel - "Holland, 1945"
And the trend continues. Lol. What is it with people barely escaping the bottom two after being in the bottom two the round before. Anyways, you better step up to back when we first started this game.
MoD: "I f**king love how messy the instrumental is, and his voice suits so well in this type of songs, I always feel so happy when this comes on, definetely an acquired taste but when it clicks, it clicks." (9.7) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (10) Leaf: "I can appreciate the poeticness here. I should really get to checking out ITAOTS." (7.7) Tay: "This one didn’t do too much for me either, unfortunately." (4.3) Max: "In another time, I might have been cool to add this into a mix of indie songs by bands like the Decemberists and whoever else, but even then, it probably wouldn't be a favourite. I kind of like where this is going but at the same time, not overly." (6.3) Recordyear: "I have seen this song and the album tossed around many times online. Didn't expect it to sound like this, but at least I can give the album a lower priority in my to-listen list (which is huge) lmao" (6.2) Fire: (6.0) TOTAL: 50.2 | AVERAGE: 7.17
Which means the bottom two is…

If I had remembered it beforehand I would have sent Cyber Stockholm Syndrome by Rina. China Girl isn't something I'm really into but my options were very thin so I went with it and prayed it would be just enough to get through the round.
Definitely hoping to pick things back up next round and so forth.

I didn’t even know B.O.B. would’ve even qualified. Like I couldn’t even tell if the abbreviation spelling was actually a part of the title, or if just the abbreviation would’ve counted.

Moving on to the next round is…
CRAP!The Clash - "London Calling"
MoD: "Killer riff and what a melody, so catchy. No wonder this has become an icon of punk rock." (9.5) Rom: "its good but its no kyoto by yung lean" (7.1) Leaf: "This might be...simplistic of me but my favourite part has always been the beat that makes it a bit hard to sit still." (8.3) Tay: (7.2) Max: "idk, I've never cared for this song." (5.5) Recordyear: "This is my general taste. It's just not good enough to rate this higher. [2]" (7.2) Fire: (5.0) TOTAL: 49.8 | AVERAGE: 7.11
You've been having a consistent run before this round. One of the best performers so far in fact! I hope this is only going to be a single slip and you'll return to form soon. Congratulations you are still in the running.
Which means…
WHEAT,I'm sorry, you have been eliminated.
MGMT - "Siberian Breaks"
MoD: "Hypnotizing song, really, doesn't feel like 12 minutes at all." (8.7) Rom: "{its good but its no kyoto by yung lean}youre being bold in sending a 12 minute song lmaooo sorry i cant help you here
" (7.8) Leaf: "That two-minute psychedelic outro is it." (8.0) Tay: "Who the hell has got time for a 12 minute song?!?! 💀💀💀Even if the song had been cut down to size, it ultimately wouldn’t have grabbed me." (2.5) Max: "I can't even be mad at someone submitting a 12-minute song for this challenge because that's a risk in itself. It being an MGMT song - I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with them. I love their first album. Their second album lost me a bit. And their third album was so bad it had to have been on purpose. The self-sabotage was real. The pretentiousness I've attributed to them has long ruined them for me. All of that said, this song is kind of epic. I don't think I've listened to it since I last listened to the album so it may as well be new to me, which would have been shortly after it came out. Let's give this an 8.0" (8.0) Recordyear: "This is just cut & paste medley like form. I don't think they bind well." (6.0) Fire: (6.0) TOTAL: 47.0 | AVERAGE: 6.71
You've been slowly gaining momentum but unfortunately one of the judges tanked you hardcore. In this type of game you can't afford to disappoint even just one judge. You're doing pretty well for a first-timer but I'm sorry, your journey must end here. Thank you for participating!

Tay, love, we need an intervention for you and the oppression you show towards longer songs.

What really hurts it that my first pick was BOB, if only I had submitted sooner :')
Oh well, I had fun. Will try again next time, definitely wanna keep up with this as it comes out as well. My partner insisted that I keep following after I'm eliminated cause they have as much fun picking songs for each theme as I do and still wanna play along as an outsider

12 minutes is like listening to 3 average-length songs personally I often have time to listen to 3 songs but maybe that’s just me
