What really hurts it that first pick was BOB, if only I had submitted sooner :') Oh well, I had fun. Will try again next time, definitely wanna keep up with this as it comes out as well. My partner insisted that I keep up with this after I'm eliminated cause they have as much fun picking songs for each theme as I do and still wanna keep up with it as an outsider thank you for participating!

I didn’t even know B.O.B. would’ve even qualified. Like I couldn’t even tell if the abbreviation spelling was actually a part of the title, or if just the abbreviation would’ve counted. I did a quick search and the song is credited as abbreviation only in US charts, but it's credited as full title in UK chart. Either way this song slaps and should have taken this round.

BONUS CHALLENGE
Happy Halloween weekend everyone! While we're still on Halloween break, let's do a little challenge for the top 12 contestant. Don't worry! This challenge is optional, and no, there won't be a penalty or punishment if you choose not to participate. Nor there will be any elimination based on this.
The challenge is simple. Send a song where the word "monster" is mentioned at least once in the lyrics. I will be the sole judge deciding who wins this challenge. The winner will get +5 bonus points added to their score next round, runner-up will get +3, and third place will get +1. Edit: once you send a song, it is final and you can not change it.
Happy Halloween!

== ROUND 5 - RESULTS ==Welcome to the fifth elimination ceremony. You know your judges, and you know your guest judges as well. Now let's see what do they think about your submissions.
A very close week between the top and the bottom but the FCO is clear, and they are…
GATES!Soundgarden - "Black Hole Sun"
Even without the +5 bonus, you got the FCO sealed already. Congratulations!
MoD: (10) Rom: "hope that the black hole sun came" (8.6) Leaf: "I've never associated this with Halloween, but I can somewhat see it + I love this so I probably wouldn't take points off for that anyway lol." (9.8) Tay: (7.9) Max: "I always associate this song with hot sticky late summer afternoons so it feels weird to (a) be listening to it now, and (b) be listening to it as part of a collection of Halloween-themed songs. I love it though. It's one of my favourite 90s songs, but it is a bit of a stretch for this week's theme. I'll rate it higher than I should based on the theme but lower than I should based on how much I love it." (8.0) Wheat: "Okay Black Hole Sun is a plenty respectable song, a true classic and an exemplary piece of modern rock music, blending grunge and psychedelia near perfectly to create a grunge anthem that has stood the test of time incredibly well. I never wanna hear this song again. BHS is great for the reasons I listed here, but it’s not like Don’t Fear the Reaper which I actively want to listen to in 2021, I will change the radio on this song 100% of the time. I guess I can’t justify knocking many points off this song just because I’ve heard it more times in my life than I’d ever want to, but just in my personal playbook I don’t consider it an all-time favorite. But it’s good, and...fits the round moderately well, I’d say. Having a legendary creepy music video is in its favor, and the cryptic, fever dream lyrics add points too. I don’t think the vibe is 100% there, but at the same time I would not at all be shocked to hear this in a Halloween playlist." (7.7) Leo: (9.7) TOTAL: 61.7 +5 = 66.7 | AVERAGE: 8.81
The second best is…
JAMES!paris jackson feat. Manchester Orchestra - "adagio"
Your bonus helped push you to second place from… third place. Needless to say, you're doing a great job lately. Also, this is the THIRD time you are the bridesmaid in five rounds. FCO next time?
MoD: (8.7) Rom: "its alright. where da manchester orchestra at though i didnt listen to this song for some WOMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (7.8) Leaf: "I really like how this gradually picks up energy throughout and then the guitarist just takes it away with the solo near the end!" (8.6) Tay: (9.5) Max: "This doesn't strike me as being super Halloweeny but I really like the sound of this so I'd definitely want to put it somewhere, whether at the end of my Halloween playlist or maybe save it for November 1. Either way, this is my favourite discovery from this round! (PS: I'm going to need whoever submitted this to tell me more about this Paris Jackson because I've gotten distracted with some of her other songs.)" (9.4) Wheat: "This is a bit challenging. I feel like comparing a song from just a few months ago to this stacked list of all-time classics is a bit unfavorable for the newer blood, but…I really like this. Good first listen. I’m not very familiar with Paris Jackson’s work, but Manchester Orchestra is one of my favorite bands, and their instrumental contribution here is very strong. Has the slow, hazy, dark country flare like a Low Lights or Quiet Hollers track, and I do love that sound. And Paris’s vocals, while not particularly distinct, complement the vibe of the track perfectly. I’ll definitely becoming back to this one. As for the spooky factor, yeah I think this is a good fit. Lyrics are vague but dark and kinda creepy, and the sound of the track reminds me of driving through middle-of-nowhere Alabama at 6 am with heavy fog and nothing but run-down little farmhouses around. I like this a lot." (8.4) Leo: (8.1) TOTAL: 60.5 +1 = 61.5 | AVERAGE: 8.64
The third best is…
LYHOM!Blue-Öyster Club - "(Don't Fear) The Reaper"
Great choice! You are also one of our most consistent performers. Keep it up!
MoD: (8.7) Rom: "i love prog sometimes man. you feel like you're going to go back to where the song began and then boom just something entirely different. it just doesnt stop" (9.3) Leaf: "Ahh I've recognized the riff for many years and finally I know what it's from, so thanks to whoever sent this I guess!" (8.0) Tay: (8.5) Max: "More cowbell! I'm a bit surprised this song isn't memorialized more during Halloween. I guess it's not particularly spooky and tbh, Idk if I'd add it to *my* Halloween playlist, but it's enough on theme in a morbid sense that I wouldn't protest." (8.1) Wheat: "This is a great pick. Fits the theme well, both having a “spooky vibe”, as well as being an actually spooky song. I’ve always thought that Don’t Fear the Reaper evokes strong imagery and has this otherworldly atmosphere to it that can’t be replicated. It’s a song that feels like a winding, multi-phase prog rock journey just as much as it does a catchy, digestible piece of radio pop. DFtR is a bona fide classic, and I think the highest praise that I can pay it is that it is a staple of classic rock radio and I played the hell out of it in Rock Band, and yet I still enjoy listening to it. And as someone whose stomach churns within 3 seconds of hearing 98% of classic rock radio staples, that really means something." (9.5) Leo: (9.0) TOTAL: 61.1 | AVERAGE: 8.73
Next…
FILTHYStevie Wonder - "Superstition"
MoD: (9.5) Rom: "groovin" (8.6) Leaf: "I almost feel bad not rating this higher as it's kind of a classic but that omnipresent clavinet annoyed me soooo much as a kid, and it still gets on my nerves after having relistened tbh." (6.1) Tay: (8.9) Max: "Yeah, why isn't this a Halloween standard? Is it and I've missed the memo? Let's do it." (8.5) Wheat: "Superstition is great, I don’t even know if it’s possible to dislike Superstition. Iconique. It’s just such an incredibly fun, sing-a-long classic with a bouncy instrumental and impressive vocal performance with catchy hook after hook, I love Superstition and you and your mom probably do too. Aaand I think it’s actually a good fit for the round too. Yeah, it’s not exactly the kind of dark, haunting music I would expect for this round, but it does have that kinda jazzy, unhinged vibe to it that I’d expect from the more fun, party side of Halloween. And of course, the lyrics being about superstition and all. It works. Again, not exactly what I’d expect here, but wouldn’t surprise me to hear in a Halloween playlist." (9.4) Leo: (9.5) TOTAL: 60.5 | AVERAGE: 8.64
Next…
TRILOGY!Sufjan Stevens - "John Wayne Gacy, Jr."
MoD: (8.5) Rom: "probably couldve used some 808s" (7.1) Leaf: "Well this is a pretty macabre choice for a Halloween song lol. Not one I listen to often because the lyrical content is heavy, to say the least." (7.8) Tay: "Sufjan Stevens is just incredible. He could turn the phonebook into an ethereal piece of music. His artistry is stunning." (10) Max: "On one hand, this doesn't *sound* like a Halloween-like song, but out of curiosity, I googled the title and learned more than I bargained for that makes the song downright frightening, and probably not the type of song I'd put on my Halloween list. I'm not sure how to feel about it either - it's almost too... intrusive?" (6.5) Wheat: "I am a fan of Sufjan Stevens, but surprisingly I don’t think I’ve ever listened to anything of his pre-Carrie & Lowell, so I’m sure that discredits me somewhat. But this is very good! I should listen to Illinois one of these days. But yeah, this track has the haunting, fragile vibe and winding melodies that I’d expect from a Sufjan song. It’s good. As for fitting the theme, it does its job. The vibe isn’t really entirely on point, but Sufjan does have this very ethereal style that is more of a fit here than not. And lyrically I dig this too, a very poetic telling of the life of JWG. Probably the only way to make me able to stomach listening to anything about John Wayne Gacy is in Sufjan Stevens song form, even as a regular consumer of true crime content I realllly cannot stand this guy. But that’s a little off topic. I like this song, should listen to more early Sufjan Stevens, serial killers are actually scary." (8.4) Leo: (8.0) TOTAL: 56.3 +3 = 59.3 | AVERAGE: 8.04
Next…
BENOGhost - "Cirice"
MoD: (9.7) Rom: "cool song. wish i knew what the dance macabre was though" (7.4) Leaf: "This is cool musically, although John Ghost's vocals just sound a bit...light for the instrumental, to me." (7.1) Tay: (9.5) Max: "I'm not sure if this song really digs deep enough into Halloweenacana that some of the others in this round. It's a couple steps further from suitability that nearly any Metallica song might be, for example, regardless of what the themes are. It just doesn't have enough oomph in the vocal. I do kind of like it tho so maybe I'd add it to my Halloween party preparation playlist before people start showing up." (7.0) Wheat: "And here’s another one that’s a perfect fit for the round. Lyrically and sonically Cirice is a pretty spooky track. I think there are some tracks here that take a more interpretive approach to the theme, which can be fine, but I do wanna give some special attention to songs that actually do feel appropriately Halloween-y. So Cirice is good here, but more importantly it’s in my top 20 songs of the 2010s. Cirice is the song that shot Ghost into hard rock stardom, and while I can get on board with just about anything by the band, the grandeur of Cirice has never been surpassed. It’s an incredible track that’s as catchy as it is doom-y, and the instrumental is incredible. We’re not quite at Dance Macabre levels of intentional cheesiness, and I think this middle ground between doom & gloom and pop rock is where Ghost exists best." (9.8) Leo: (8.5) TOTAL: 59.0 | AVERAGE: 8.43
Next…
MAYMANKate Bush - "Waking The Witch"
MoD: (6.7) Rom: "im wake" (8.5) Leaf: "Well, I can respect that it's more Halloween-ish than Hounds of Love for sure (not that I really base my ratings on how much they fit this theme). I didn't think my favourite part of this would end up being the piano in the first minute. The rest of it just kinda sounded like "look how quirky I am :goofy: "" (6.9) Tay: "What the hell was that demonic sound during this?! That was TERRIFYING…I gave this song a 10 just for keeping up with the Halloween theme in that fashion lol" (10) Max: "This one is a mood. Halloween might actually be the only time I'd listen to this one. I like Kate's other entry more but this one feels more on theme so I'm a bit torn." (8.2) Wheat: "More Kate Bush. Ok. I don’t think I like this song quite as much as Hounds of Love in terms of like, something I’d want to come back to casually just to listen to, but it does definitely fit this theme better, and it’s plenty impressive in its own right. I didn’t know that Kate Bush dabbled in such heavy sounds as she does here. Like, this track has a ton of atmosphere it, it’s genuinely creepy at times. The deep demon-like voice, the indecipherable stuttered vocals near the front in, the production itself. And the song itself is about a drowning woman and facing her own mortality? That’s…pretty cool. Now, I do think this is a little avant-garde for my taste, maybe even just as a finished piece it seems a little scattered, but you could probably argue that disorienting sound is probably intentional. This one’s cool. I should listen to a full Kate Bush album one day." (8.0) Leo: (8.3) TOTAL: 56.6 | AVERAGE: 8.09
Next…
CRAPGorillaz - "Clint Eastwood"
MoD: (9.0) Rom: "what a nice song. i hope that dude got the bag or whatever" (8.1) Leaf: "I guess my favourite parts are the use of the melodica and that 1-2-3-4 beat that hits a few times, but the melody gets old impressively fast and I've never really liked Damon's (or whichever cartoon he is) hook, and that totally overshadows the elements I do like." (4.8) Tay: (7.6) Max: "Yeah, this needs to be on my Halloween playlist." (8.6) Wheat: "Clint Eastwood is just one of those songs that I feel is so inherently and obviously “great” (until one or more of the judges here proves me wrong), I don’t think there’s too much to say about it that hasn’t already been said. The production is so uniquely trippy and bizarre, those hard hitting snare hits during “it’s coming on…” make me go buck wild. There’s nothing else out there that sounds like Clint Eastwood. And for this theme…I mean, the song is actually kinda creepy sounding. I remember hearing this as a kid and thinking “wow this is a weird creepy song, I don’t think I like it”. The beat sounds like some kind of demented circus music, and the fuzzed out harmonica riff adds an inexplicable atmosphere as well, like a liminal space in sound form. 2D’s deadpan vocals and Del’s more wild rapping contrast each other well, but they both sound equally sinister. And apparently Clint Eastwood is actually about something, dissociative drugs, ghosts, dead family members. Fitting. Good stuff. I like Clint Eastwood." (9.7) Leo: (8.8) TOTAL: 56.6 | AVERAGE: 8.09
Next...
WILLAPTED!Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - "Red Right Hand"
MoD: (8.7) Rom: "nick cave and i share a birthday. spooky" (8.5) Leaf: "This is definitely a great fit for the theme, and the song itself isn't bad either." (7.9) Tay: (5.8) Max: "Nick Cave has a great voice for Halloweeny songs so kudos to this choice. It does sit a bit on the longer side, but it's spooky in a quirky way so it totally fits on my playlist." (8.7) Wheat: "Nick Cave is another natural fit here. I’m not overly familiar with his music, but I have heard enough to catch his general vibe. That said, apparently I’m unaware of arguably his most popular song, this was a first listen for me. And again, fits the theme of the round quite well. Being used extensively in the Scream franchise (according to Wikipedia & not my personal experience) does count for some extra points. Song is...alright. I do appreciate what this is going for and think it’s successful. I do like the bluesy Southern gothic vibe, and there’s a lot of cool sounds at play here too. I just think the song itself is a little bit flat, could be a bit more dynamic. I can appreciate what this is going for, and I wish it connected with me more, but after a couple listens this just isn’t really doing it for me." (7.4) Leo: (9.0) TOTAL: 56.0 | AVERAGE: 8.0
The last name to escape the bottom two is…
GPRihanna - "Russian Roulette"
MoD: (5.2) Rom: "you can very clearly hear a dice rattling sound effect even though this song is about russian roulette. fire the producer" (6.2) Leaf: "ok, I haven't revisited this in a long time but it used to be one of my favourites from Rihanna. Really dark and brooding, especially considering the circumstances around the song." (8.9) Tay: (9.2) Max: "You know what? This works. It's no Disturbia but it has the right vibe." (8.3) Wheat: "So full disclosure, Russian Roulette is actually far and away my favorite Rihanna song. So good pick here! I love the drama of the track, the smooth, dark, sexy edge of the song has always stuck with me as particularly affecting, and the vocal performance is strong too. Also this instrumental is so dense and layered and moody, love it. Even as not a huge fan of Rihanna just in general, I do go hog wild for Russian Roulette. But is this halloween themed at all? I...don’t really get it. The vibe’s not all there, yeah it’s on the moodier side but it really doesn’t compare with anything else here. I guess lyrically some of the imagery is a bit morbid, and, same as with the Banks song, the relationship described here *is* scary in its own way, but not exactly what I would expect for this theme." (7.8) Leo: (9.4) TOTAL: 55.0 | AVERAGE: 7.86
Which means the bottom two is…

Devil Marlena Nylund, I straight up have not listened to any of Paris Jackson's music outside of this and her awful feature on The Struts' "Low Key In Love", lol. I only checked this one out because Manchester Orchestra is one of my favorite bands lmao. Also for those who didn't know, Paris Jackson is Michael Jackson's daughter.

Sambalada did I give the Sufjan song a 6.8?! I could’ve sworn I gave it a 10? (EDIT: I did give it a 10)

Moving on to the next round is…
HAMEDBANKS - "Trainwreck"
MoD: (3.2) Rom: "when she said "i become dumb" i felt that" (8.7) Leaf: "A banger. This was so good live. The music video fits the theme pretty nicely too imo." (10) Tay: "Anybody got some BABKS recs? I’ve been meaning to get into her work!" (9.0) Max: "I was SUPER into Banks' style of electropop back around the time of her first album, and while I don't listen to it a lot these days, I still consider it among my favourite genres - and when songs venture into the darker moody type, they really fit Halloween! This song was a standout of The Altar, and is one of the ones that I'd add to a Halloween playlist." (9.0) Wheat: "I’ve enjoyed a Banks song or two over the years, but I do find the vast majority of her work serviceable yet underwhelming, which is just about where this falls. The tune itself isn’t too bad, but it does feel a bit muddy. The chorus sounds like a dark club banger, but the production isn’t strong enough to back it up. I’m fully on board with a nocturnal pop track such as this, but Trainwreck just doesn’t fully deliver on its vision. Kinda reminds me of some of PVRIS’s most recent work, which I’m not fully into. That said, I do like the vocal delivery here, it’s some of the most aggressive singing I’ve heard from Banks to date, and the lyrics are cutting as well. I should also mention that I get absolutely 0 spooky vibes from this at all. I mean, the joyless, claustrophobic relationship described here is scary in its own way, but it’s not like…Halloween." (5.8) Leo: (8.7) TOTAL: 54.4 | AVERAGE: 7.77
This might be your first time being in the LOW group but you have also been quite close to this position a couple times. An underdog edit is cute but we can't keep you forever. It's also important to please ALL the judges. Congratulations you're still in the running!
Which means…
SAMO, I'm sorry, you have been eliminated.
Kate Bush - "Hounds Of Love"
MoD: (8.5) Rom: "what da dog doin?" (7.5) Leaf: "Considering the theme, I wasn't expecting this to sound so triumphant. Also, I realize that it's probably intentional, but I don't love how echoey her vocals sound here." (7.1) Tay: (6.8) Max: "First off, shame on me for not being super familiar with Kate Bush outside of a couple of songs. I should already know this song, but I don't. I'm sorry. I like it tho. For Halloween? Not sure this is the one I'd put on my Halloween playlist." (7.2) Wheat: "Hounds of Love is for sure a very pretty song. I love the production and instrumentation, and I think this is one of Kate’s most powerful vocal performances I’ve heard. I do think some of the vocal embellishments are a bit excessive at times, but overall it’s a solid track, though I have heard better from her. Now that said, do I think that Hounds of Love has anything remotely spooky about it? No, not really. I guess some of the lyricism about being chased by these hounds is effectively tense, and there is definitely a lot of mystique here that I can appreciate, but…I don’t know, it is all metaphor, and the production and overall sound is so pillowy and lush. It just doesn’t really fit here at all. But, it does feature a sample from an actual horror movie, to its credit." (7.6) Leo: (9.3) TOTAL: 54.0 | AVERAGE: 7.71
NOOOOOOO, this is so sad. :( With the same average score you have now, you would've been SAFE last round but in a tight week like this, you caught the short end of the stick and landed in the bottom. In the end, the judges think your song doesn't feel Halloween enough. Thank you for participating!

Also for those who didn't know, Paris Jackson is Michael Jackson's daughter. I legit wondered and decided that she wasn’t that Paris so colour me even more surprised about that!

I picked "Black Hole Sun" almost because I don't see it on generic Halloween playlists and I wanted to try something unique in that regard. But like, aside from the specific "summer" callout, the rest of the lyrics are some of the most gothic shit I've heard outside of actual goth rock, and you have to turn the lights down for those doomy-ass riffs
