Lead single from Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, Alanis's sophomore album in the United States. Peaked at #1 CHR, but only #17 on the Hot 100 (what was going on there?)
I love this! The whole song builds up to the part where she yells at the end "silence, eyeeahhh eyeeeahhh..." Does it remind anyone else of the end of Lady Gaga "Bloody Mary"?
I know it wasn't very well-liked but I'm not sure why, it's catchy af, and seems right on par with radio in 1998. Also I don't really agree with some that say it was too much a departure from Jagged Little Pill, to me it sounds like it could've easily been a single off JLP. It might not sound like "You Oughta Know", but it seems like it could be on an album with "Hand In My Pocket" or "Head Over Feet".
I know radio was anxious to play any lead single from Alanis's follow-up to JLP, but still, to get all the way to #1 on Top 40, people do have to like it, quite a bit. Just look at half of Katy Perry's Prism singles. No?

I like this song. If anything, I do think it's a little safer than the offerings on JLP.

Radio-only singles weren't allowed to chart before December 1998 so only part of it's run on radio was represented on the Hot 100.

I liked this. I remember watching the video on Vh-1 back then.

I liked this at the time, but I never listen to it anymore. It's grating. My least favorite of her US hits.

I don't remember it being hated, but I didn't pay close attention either. I love it. I don't even think it's all that different from her JLP stuff on the whole. I know she got labeled as 'angry female rock' for "You Oughta Know," but "Thank U" isn't far removed from "Hand In My Pocket," "You Learn," etc. I like this song. If anything, I do think it's a little safer than the offerings on JLP. How is it safer than "Hand In My Pocket," "Head Over Feet," or "You Learn?"

Jagged Little Pill had alternative/rock stylings with those electric guitars on its singles. Even Head Over Feet, the mellower of the singles, benefited from this cool guitar riff supporting the choruses. Thank U is devoid of that sound - being a mostly keyboard/drum song. I'm sure a guitar is thrown in the mix, but it's not as prominent. To me, it takes the edge off, and it sounds a bit "safer" to me.

It had a very short run at radio for a song that peaked as high as it did. Blew up upon release and peaked at #1 at Pop radio but only spent 16 weeks on the chart (for comparison, all the Jagged Little Pill singles spent at least 22 weeks on the chart, even the ones that didn't go to #1) and was completely out of the Top 10 only a month after hitting #1. A lot of initial hype as the follow-up to four consecutive Pop radio #1s and being the lead from the follow-up to Jagged Little Pill but not received well enough to stick around.
FWIW, it's her biggest hit in some European countries including the UK.

Thank U is more polished and smooth in its sound whereas all the JLP singles were grittier. SFIJ did have some grittier moments but the singles stayed fairly on the lighter side. Only Joining You ventured into that territory but that was the rock single.

But I wanted to show the side by side comparison to this song and "Born This Way", it's a very similar trajectory. Same number of weeks in the top 10. gghunt.utasites.cloud/charts/Songruns/L/ladygaga/born_this_way.htmgghunt.utasites.cloud/charts/Songruns/M/AlanisMOrissette/thank_u.htmEven still, people must have liked it quite a bit initially or else radio will not send something all the way to #1 no matter how much hype surrounds it? Am I wrong?

While not on her best album, this is is her best song, love it. Alanis is a true poet and great songwriter. How about remembering your divinity? It continually has a deeper meaning for me as time goes by, thereβs a sense of catharsis to it.
