The Weeknd doing synthwave is getting old. He should try experimenting with the sounds of the 90s/00s. If the Dawn is as varied as After Hours was then I think that he'll be fine. It still amazes me how both Hardest to Love and UIBO can be on the same album and link so perfectly to the same story. However I completely agree I'd love some sounds from the 90s in particular.

Staffers at Rolling Stone have been informed that the charts are gonna get discontinued and that they'll refocus the whole thing into being an infotainment magazine as it used to be, while expanding coverage to more varied topics. The company that owns RS also controls Billboard now, so to be honest they will not compete against themselves. You might see some sort of "consumption metric" chart that is just the RS100 pop up on the Billboard site eventually. This week, Rolling Stone informed staffers that it was ending Rolling Stone Charts, the rolling list of the most popular songs and albums that it launched in 2019 as a competitor to Billboard, the industry standard. Last year, PMC reached a $225 million deal for control of Billboard's parent entity. The deal was reportedly under antitrust scrutiny from the Department of Justice.
A PMC spokesperson said that review was closed. A spokesperson for the DOJ declined to comment.
The charts decision fits with Rolling Stone's plan to wind down the trade publication-style reporting it does on the music industry, an area already covered by Billboard. "Rolling Stone at its best is a consumer product," Wenner said. PMC also owns other business-oriented titles, such as Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, WWD, and Deadline.www.businessinsider.com/rolling-stone-editor-plans-to-revive-magazine-internal-tensions-2021-10

Take My Breath was great but I agree, I think the GP is starting to get tired of his whole 80's thing

If the GP was tired of this whole 80s thing, shouldn’t radio have dropped Stay before it dropped TMB? Or does the 80s thing only apply to Abel?

You right #15,need to know #9 ... i can’t believe Adele just slid off like that…. we were all so confident in her chart performance lol. i mean it’s still amazing but 300+ points second week (with 60m+ radio) is pretty underwhelming for someone like Adele, who we hailed as an unbreakable wall, when relatively new artists like Olivia, Bts, Lil Nas X can score higher second week numbers not dunking on Adele, i’m just extremely surprised lol. excited to see what happens in the coming weeks

I still think the RS charts going away is inevitable, but the article that Choco shared did not list an exact date as to when it’ll happen. Like they said, maybe Billboard is readying their own similar consumption chart before they pull the plug on RS’ charts. We’ll know when they’ve stopped publishing those charts for good when we see an Error 404 on that page.

Permission To Dance is #1 currently. They have this chart in real time aswell (it is powered by Twitter). Songs are ranked by "mentions".
Twitter fanwars time.
oh this is easily the stupidest chart they’ve ever had..??? i can’t wrap my head around this like what’s the point of tracking what song names trend on twitter

Their yearend chart might be a good point to stop. I'd bet on that being their last published chart.

On the last Pandora Top Spins weekly chart, Easy on Me debuted at #1 and Ex for a Reason at #2.

Stay is still undoubtedly more popular than Take My Breath so it makes sense why they dropped Take My Breath before Stay also Laroi and Bieber don't do 80s music nearly as much as The Weeknd does.

These social charts will never work.

We’ll know when they’ve stopped publishing those charts for good when we see an Error 404 on that page. Billboard already has their own song/album chart. Best case, they make their own version of Rolling Stone's Artist 500 chart but I really don't see that happening. Billboard loves to reveal as little data as possible and a chart like that would go against how they've always operated but we'll see. My guess is that they pull the plug at the end of the year or after they announce something to replace the Artist 500 chart.

These social charts will never work. lol i did get surprised at permission to dance being so high, makes sense now. and yeah, keyword based charts just lack so much nuance - what if i tweet a link to a song and it gets hundreds of engagements discussing it, but bc i didn’t spell out the name it doesn’t count… or if i called Montero ‘CMBYN’ and it just didn’t get picked up. and that’s the least of the problems bc this chart is just going to drive fans to spam the names of recently released songs, which is good for absolutely nobody

To be fair we all ignored the first social chart. We'll be fine. I did roll my eyes at the weekly "BTS extends lead at #1 for the 875th week in a row".

Buying songs is putting your money on something you favor. It's hard to get more committed than that. It's also (usually) a very short-lived sort of engagement if something doesn't connect on streaming or radio. This is something we've seen for a long time and it's hard to imagine sales being taken off simply because the wrong people support songs with the wrong message.

so annoying and boring already Then again, it can’t possibly get any worse than Don’t Go Yet. That was arguably the worst song of the year.

There is one sign of hope regarding the Rolling Stone chart ending: Alpha Data, which was the supplier of all numbers/sales/streams for the chart is an entirely different company from Rolling Stone. Billboard & Rolling Stone being owned by the same company now doesn’t effect Alpha Data which is a separate company, Alpha Data is still in continued business and still compiling its own data. That means they can just find another magazine, company, whatever similar to Rolling Stone to continue publishing the charts under.
Even before Rolling Stones, they used to have a weekly top 100 artists chart that was based on audio streams (then it became a top 500 under RS based on the same thing).
I’m sure that Alpha Data will likely try to find another way to publish the charts, whether it be under another company or just directly from their website. The Rolling Stone charts got press and visibility which automatically helped Alpha Data establish presence in the industry as a rival to Nielsen/MRC Data. I’m sure they’ll want to continue that.
