I think I'm most surprised by Rub You the Right Way making the top-10! #taste

Everything else was 100% expected (including my boring ass 28).

No big surprises other than a pleasant one for Rub You The Right Way for me either. I thought either Pebbles or T3 would get in instead. Switched my 10 and 11 back and forth a few times and considered having them both in the top 10, but I just had to show out for Jerk Out.

I'm glad Prince got in here too. One of his under-appreciated hits, as shown by the reaction here. They can stay hating while the Purple One again puts them in their place with superior hair, clothes, moves, and heels.

"Rub You The Right Way" was Johnny's first release from his self-titled 1990 album. It's also his biggest hit, peaking inside the Top 5 on the Hot 100 and going gold.

Produced by Walter Afanasieff, Mariah's second single became her second straight to top both the R&B and Hot 100 charts. Mariah had intended to save it for her second album, but when she played the demo for Columbia Records president Don Ienner, he insisted that she include it on her first album, even though it was already being processed for release. As a result, the song wasn't listed on the earliest pressings of the album.

7. All Around The World - Lisa Stansfield

"All Around The World" first dropped in Europe in the fall of 1989 and quickly rose to the top of the UK charts. It was her first release in the US a few months later, topping the R&B chart and hitting the Top 5 on the Hot 100. Internationally, besides the UK it hit #1 in 6 other countries. The song helped Lisa garner Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (losing in both of those categories to Mariah).

6. Hold On - En Vogue

Formed in Oakland by songwriting and production duo Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, they envisioned a group where every member could sing lead. Thousands of ladies auditioned, with Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones, Terry Ellis, and Dawn Robinson making the cut. And thus, En Vogue was born. Their first single, "Hold On", was a hit right out of the box, topping the R&B chart and almost doing the same on the Hot 100. Sampling the guitar riff from James Brown's "The Payback" and beginning with an a cappella version of "Who's Lovin' You", "Hold On went on to become Billboard's top R&B single for 1990. It won a Soul Train Award for Best Single By a Duo/Group and was nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance By a Duo Or Group.
