Kicking off our Top 20 is "cowboy like me," which for me was an immediate highlight from evermore. I loved the way the story unfolded, the country elements, and the lyrics like Now you hang from my lips like the Gardens of Babylon/With your boots beneath my bed/Forever is the sweetest con. I also love how this is basically gay country music, because I see the narrator as a cowboy, so like an actual man, talking to another cowboy, so like another actual man. You know what supports my theory? The skeletons in both our closets plotted hard to f**k this up. That's what. This is gay country music--try to change my mind.
In "cowboy like me," Taylor sings about two "gold-digging" con artists who unexpectedly fall in love with each other, while frequenting resorts and deceiving rich individuals. It is an alternative country, folk rock, and blues tune with hushed guitars, harmonica riff, mandolin, piano, lap steel, and background vocals by Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons.

I want auroras and sad prose I want to watch wisteria grow right over my bare feet 'Cause I haven't moved in years And I want you right here A red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground With no one around to tweet it While I bathe in cliffside pools With my calamitous love and insurmountable grief.
Take me to the Lakes where all the poets went to die I don't belong and, my beloved, neither do you Those Windermere peaks look like a perfect place to cry I'm setting off, but not without my muse

I love "the lakes" so much. I'm so glad it managed to do so well in this rankdown, sneaking into the Top 20 here! It wasn't quite ready for streaming yet when we launched folklore's rankdown, so this is its first appearance, which makes its performance here all the more impressive! I love the "original version" even more, although the version Taylor ultimately told Jack Antonoff to use suits the album much better, especially as a closer and the track that followed the despondent "hoax."
"the lakes" is a string-laden midtempo song that sees Taylor introspecting on her semi-retirement in England's Lake District, especially Windermere; this location is also mentioned in "invisible string" (Bold was the waitress on our three year trip getting lunch down by the Lakes). Imagining a red rose growing out of tundra "with no one around to tweet it," she fantasizes about a social-media-free utopia, with references to depression, Wisteria flowers, and William Wordsworth, the 19th-century poet known for his Romantic writings.

The original version of the lakes is the closest Taylor has gotten to baroque pop and I wish she did it more ๐

We never painted by the numbers, baby But we were making it count You know the greatest loves of all time are over now I guess you never know, never know And it's another day, waking up alone
But we were something, don't you think so? Roaring twenties, tossing pennies in the pool And if my wishes came true It would've been you In my defense, I have none For never leaving well enough alone But it would've been fun If you would've been the one.
Hey, yeah-yeah I persist and resist the temptation to ask you If one thing had been different

EDIT: This is about "the lakes". "the 1" has always been pretty overrated so I'm glad to see it out sooner than the last time!

I'm genuinely shocked y'all didn't place "The Lakes" higher. It is one of her best written songs ever.

I LOVED "the 1" when it came out, and I still play it quite frequently! I really appreciate its position as the folklore album opener and the very first look we were given at Taylor's expansion of sound. It makes me think of the one man I've ever loved lol, and it makes me wonder how different things might be right now if we were actually as meant to be as I thought we were at the time.
"the 1" is a soft rock tune driven by a bouncy arrangement of piano, minimal percussion, and electronic accents. Written in the perspective of a friend of Taylor's, "the 1" describes their new-found positive approach to life and past love, wishing that they could have been soulmates.

Sweet tea in the summer Cross your heart, won't tell no other And though I can't recall your face I still got love for you Your braids like a pattern Love you to the moon and to Saturn Passed down like folk songs The love lasts so long.
And I've been meaning to tell you I think your house is haunted Your dad is always mad and that must be why And I think you should come live with Me and we can be pirates Then you won't have to cry Or hide in the closet And just like a folk song

You might have picked up on my random inclusion of an iconic Season 4 scene of Friends, in which Monica demonstrates to Chandler the seven female erogenous zones. Couldn't help but use that as a hint, lol! Anyways, "seven" has LONG been a favorite of mine from folklore and across these two albums, and I'm glad it did so well here! In "seven," Taylor sings in an innocent tone, exuding nostalgia and reminiscing about an abused friend from her childhood in Pennsylvania, whom she cannot fully remember but still has fond memories of, over a resonant production set to flurrying strings and piano. The song's escapist lyrics see her hinting at her friend's queerness and urging them to run away with her to India.

While you were out building other worlds, where was I? Where's that man who'd throw blankets over my barbed wire? I made you my temple, my mural, my sky Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life Drawing hearts in the byline Always taking up too much space or time You assume I'm fine But what would you do if I
Break free and leave us in ruins Took this dagger in me and removed it Gain the weight of you then lose it Believe me, I could do it If it's all in my head tell me now Tell me I've got it wrong somehow I know my love should be celebrated

this was a pretty great set outside of "the lakes" (though I would've ranked it around that spot if I hadn't heard the original version)
"willow" shouldn't still be in but there's no way it's out soon so "my tears ricochet" is the only song I hope misses the top 10

OUCH. That last one hurt to reveal just as much as it hurt to see once we'd compiled the data. "tolerate it" strikes home for me. I watched my mother go through this--and worse--for a number of years before deciding that she deserved much better. The lyrics I highlighted wreck me every single time, and are among Taylor's career-best penmanship.
Chronicling a young woman in an age-gap relationship, "tolerate it" is the internal agony of the resentful protagonist looking to terminate the unbalanced relationship with her unappreciative partner. The slow-building ballad is guided by a muffled piano and tense synth-beats. Its plot was inspired by Rebecca, the 1938 novel by English author Daphne du Maurier.

Your Top 15!
cardigan the last great american dynasty exile (ft. Bon Iver) my tears ricochet mirrorball august this is me trying betty willow champagne problems gold rush tis the damn season no body, no crime (ft. HAIM) ivy marjorie
That's all for today, and I'll see you when we reach the Top 5! Until then, I leave you with exit music from Taylor's "son" (and my favorite man on planet earth but that's not the point here) Conan Gray! His latest single "Jigsaw" loosely reminds me of "tolerate it," in that he wrote about doing a number of things for somebody only for that person to not even care--and barely even tolerate him. It's a really great song, and I urge you to give it a listen--and give him your streams! <3

Both โsevenโ and โcowboy like meโ gave me Tori Amos codes upon listening to those respective albums the first couple times. As such, they were early favourites because they gave me something to draw on to make them standouts.
Also, seeing โtolerate itโ out now comes as a blow, yet I ranked it much lower than its actual position. Thatโs how strong these songs all are!

โtolerate itโ actually didnโt grow on me until quite recently. LOVE the bridge and how it transitions into the final chorus.

Wtf?? Tolerate It is amazing. That bridge, the vocals, the production, she did that on this song. This deserved so much better.

The only songs left which I find overrated are betty, NBNC, and mirrorball. Otherwise it's a solid top 15 despite how many top 10s I have lost.

also i wonder if the people who ranked seven at #7 did it on purpose or not lol I almost did, but I decided I definitely like it more than "tolerate it". On that note, both of those deserved better. :'(

For me, "the 1" is a lot deeper than the lyrics read on paper. Lines like "the greatest love stories are over now" and even "it would have been fun, if you would have been the one" just hit me. We all have that person we fondly remember, even though its over. I don't know, it just really resonates with me.
