Adrian C.'s Top 50 Songs of 2021!Hello all! As 2021 is coming to an end, it is that time once again to count down the songs that I found to be highlights throughout the year. A lot went down in 2021 for me, resulting in me being significantly less active on Pulse. But I remained as consistent as I could be with my personal chart because the music this year just did not disappoint and I personally believe that as a whole, I find my year-end list this year to be better than my year-end list last year. I think that this group of songs will hold up really well with time and I'll find myself revisiting these songs more than the songs from last year's list. Now as we go through the list, there are a handful of songs present that were not released in 2021 either because they were Pulse Madness discoveries or I just simply stumbled upon them a year later. Regardless, they are songs that I believe defined my year and I just thoroughly enjoy them regardless of when they came out. I also just want to say that I'm super grateful for Pulse because as you'll see, a lot of these songs are madness discoveries. My music taste wouldn't be where it is if it wasn't for all these madness games, so I'm glad this has become a place for me to find new music from other people!
As I mentioned, I've been consistent with my personal chart (which can be found on Pulse and on Crownnote) this year, and so this year-end list is based on performance on my chart. These are the 50 songs that performed the best on my chart throughout 2021. The tracking period is from December 20, 2020 to December 12, 2021. Points accumulated from the final two weeks of 2020 have been added to this year's list and as usual, the final two weeks of 2021 will count towards the Top 50 Songs of 2022. In addition to the main 50 songs, I've also compiled 20 extras, which are songs that appeared on my chart during the year, but were not able to make it to the final Top 50. These will be posted five times (once after every ten reveals) in groups of four, and we'll start with one group before the official Top 50 reveals begin. Since I have already put the final list together, we should be able to start within the next couple days and hopefully finish before the new year!
One last thing I'll note is that throughout the reveals, several songs will have an asterisk (*) attached to their number of weeks on the chart. That means the song is still charting as of December 12, 2021.
I'm tagging the same people from last year's audience, but if anyone wants to be added or removed, please let me know!

{Text Only} 50. Kylie Minogue - "Magic"
Points: 47,147 Peak: #4 Weeks on Chart: 26 Notes: - This song was carried over from 2020. It spent 26 weeks on the chart total, with 21 of those weeks being within the 2021 tracking period.
{2020 Chart Run:} 34-26-25-21-24-... 2021 Chart Run: ...-20-21-23-21-22-30-31-23-6-4-11-11-23-28-30-31-39-37-39-42-43-Off
Kicking off our list is Kylie Minogue's "Magic", which originally debuted on the chart late last year and managed to just barely make the year-end list this year. I love Kylie and she's actually my second most-played artist of 2021 according to Spotify. I've loved a handful of her songs for a long time but I really got into her this year. "Magic" is a jam, just like "Say Something", which made last year's Top 50. I just love the production mixed with some cool instrumental choices like the horns. The chorus is super catchy and I think she's a very talented singer. While this is her only song on this list, with "Dance Floor Darling" and "Kiss Of Life" currently charting, she could potentially make a couple appearances next year!

{Text Only} 49. Coldplay - "Higher Power"
Points: 50,094 Peak: #3 Weeks on Chart: 20 2021 Chart Run: 25-16-13-8-3-5-7-15-18-20-20-25-25-31-40-35-35-29-35-42-Off
Oftentimes for me, it's not a complete year-end list without a Coldplay song. That being said, Music Of The Spheres is on the messier side of things, which is unfortunate after how good Everyday Life was. "Higher Power", while being quite possibly my least favorite of their lead singles, is still a good song. I like the vibe it was going for and the upbeat production is kind of refreshing. It reminds me of Mylo Xyloto a little bit, which is an album I still love to this day. While I can see how this song can be underwhelming at this stage in their career, I think it's perfectly enjoyable for what it is.

{Text Only} 48. Miley Cyrus - "Midnight Sky"
Points: 50,101 Peak: #13 Weeks on Chart: 31 Notes: - This song was carried over from 2020. It spent 31 weeks on the chart total, with 26 of those weeks being within the 2021 tracking period.
{2020 Chart Run:} 33-23-26-29-28-... 2021 Chart Run: ...-24-22-14-13-17-13-13-32-32-34-28-28-32-45-Off-42-33-26-32-32-31-36-41-42-39-39-36-Off
Up next is another 2020 song, this one being Miley Cyrus' "Midnight Sky". I'm not exactly a huge fan of Plastic Hearts as a whole, but "Midnight Sky" really was a kick-ass lead single. What a fantastic song and easily one of the best moments of Miley's career. I think she's an incredibly talented singer and her voice just shines here. The production is killer. The song initially charted on my chart as the Stevie Nicks remix, which combines the song with "Edge Of Seventeen". I absolutely adore that version. It's like the perfect mix of disco, pop, and rock. And I also love the visuals in the music video. I love everything about this song and I do think it underperformed a bit on my chart, but I'm happy to see it on my year-end list regardless!

{Text Only} 47. Glass Animals & Bree Runway - "Space Ghost Coast To Coast"
Points: 51,558 Peak: #5 Weeks on Chart: 21 2021 Chart Run: 38-30-14-13-16-14-11-10-8-5-9-10-11-19-30-34-34-36-40-45-44-Off
Glass Animals make an appearance for a second year in a row, this time with "Space Ghost Coast To Coast", particularly the version with Bree Runway. I honestly have no idea why I like this song. Something about the beat and the production just makes the song super catchy. Interestingly I also think Bree Runway adds quite a bit here to the point where the original version feels a little empty. While "Heat Waves" might have been their big mainstream hit, I find this one to be a bit more infectious.

{Text Only} 46. Awolnation - "The Best"
Points: 52,279 Peak: #14 Weeks on Chart: 25 2021 Chart Run: 29-20-23-22-22-21-23-23-19-19-18-14-14-14-19-20-19-27-30-34-34-36-36-40-39-Off
Next we have Awolnation, who I don't really listen to that often, though they have a few songs that I enjoy a good amount. "The Best" is very catchy, particularly the chorus, and I like how fast-paced it is. It has this energy to it that just makes me want to get up and move. I'm not sure it has a lot in terms of the replay factor, but as it is, it's probably one of my favorite things Awolnation has put out.

{Text Only} 45. Rina Sawayama - "STFU!"
Points: 52,447 Peak: #4 Weeks on Chart: 22 2021 Chart Run: 33-26-17-9-9-4-4-8-4-10-12-20-22-27-32-37-42-45-44-44-44-44-Off
Next up, we have Rina Sawayama with "STFU". I've heard a handful of her songs through madness games and I like how her album touches on a bunch of different genres like pop, rock, and R&B. "STFU" was one of the standouts mostly because of how relatable it is. But also, the instrumentation is fantastic and I like how the verses and the chorus contrast from each other with how well it works here. The song is a complete banger and I'm grateful for Pulse for introducing her music to me because her album is quite good!

{Text Only} 44. Of Monsters and Men - "Visitor"
Points: 55,505 Peak: #3 Weeks on Chart: 29 Notes: - This song was carried over from 2020. It spent 29 weeks on the chart total, with 16 of those weeks being within the 2021 tracking period.
{2020 Chart Run:} 33-18-16-16-14-12-7-7-5-4-4-9-8-... 2021 Chart Run: ...-7-7-3-3-3-6-5-5-12-13-13-22-27-32-34-38-Off
Of Monsters and Men make an appearance this year after having the #2 song of last year with "Wild Roses". "Visitor" actually came very close to making the year-end list last year, but just barely missed. Fortunately it managed to make this year's list with how well it did at the beginning of the year. I love how Of Monsters and Men always switch up their sound a bit, yet it always works well. The instrumentation blends with Nanna's vocals really well. They're one of those bands who tend to be consistently good, so I look forward to whatever comes next!

{Text Only} 43. HEALTH - "CYBERPUNK 2.0.2.0."
Points: 56,138 Peak: #13 Weeks on Chart: 25* 2021 Chart Run: 37-28-25-24-21-19-17-13-18-25-18-16-13-13-13-17-20-18-16-22-22-21-31-31-31-...
Next up, we have our first song that is still charting at the moment, "CYBERPUNK 2.0.2.0." by HEALTH. It's also a March Madness discovery (sent by Geometrical). I don't think this made it further than the preliminary, but there's just something so intriguing about this song. It has a really dark vibe, almost kind of haunting in a way. The instrumental is super cool and unique and I absolutely love the vocal delivery. It's very different than what I'm used to listening to, but I think it's a super cool tune, so I'm grateful for the discovery!

{Text Only} 42. The Killers - "West Hills"
Points: 56,597 Peak: #2 Weeks on Chart: 13* 2021 Chart Run: 33-27-23-16-9-6-5-2-2-2-5-4-3-...
The Killers dropped a new album this year titled Pressure Machine, which is quite different from last year's Imploding The Mirage, which spawned the #1 song of 2020, "Caution". This new album is mostly folk rock and Americana. It's a good album though and one of the highlights is the opening track "West Hills". I think the songwriting is really strong with this song and the album as a whole, but it's also very interesting musically as it's quite different from what The Killers usually put out. It has a really nice climax though, and Brandon Flowers sounds awesome here. It's currently fighting for #1 on my chart and all I'll say is that the song keeps getting better with time!

{Text Only} 41. The Killers - "Dying Breed"
Points: 56,816 Peak: #9 Weeks on Chart: 28 2021 Chart Run: 32-28-23-26-25-23-30-28-31-24-20-17-16-9-10-20-20-27-27-28-28-30-31-37-37-37-40-40-Off
Of course, we still had a couple of songs from Imploding The Mirage chart this year. "My God" made the year-end list last year, and now this year we have "Dying Breed", which is yet another standout from that album. It's just so well-produced and I love the build-up! My constant comment about The Killers is that they scored big with their debut single, and since then they've been consistently good while still switching things up for each album. "Dying Breed" still sounds as fresh as it did the first time I heard it and Brandon Flowers is still as great of a vocalist as he's always been!

{Text Only} 40. Wolf Alice - "Lipstick On The Glass"
Points: 57,403 Peak: #1 (2 Weeks) Weeks on Chart: 11* 2021 Chart Run: 33-25-13-10-9-3-3-3-1-1-2-...
Next up, we have Wolf Alice, who earned two #1 hits this year! I hadn't heard of them before hearing "The Last Man On Earth" earlier this year, and I listened to the entirety of Blue Weekend a few months after it came out. But it's honestly a stellar album and "Lipstick On The Glass" is one of my favorites. There's this atmospheric feel to the song, which can also be said about the album as a whole. But I really love Ellie's vocals here between the notes she hits in the verses and the layers in the chorus. This is one of those songs where it's so captivating that the rest of the world fades out and you get lost in the music. It's honestly a gorgeous song!

{Text Only} 39. Tori Amos - "Speaking With Trees"
Points: 57,690 Peak: #1 (3 Weeks) Weeks on Chart: 8* 2021 Chart Run: 13-3-1-1-1-2-2-4-...
I believe this is the youngest song to make the list having only been around on the chart since late October. It's Tori Amos' latest lead single, "Speaking With Trees". Interestingly, Tori Amos is an artist who I've started to get into earlier this year as I adore songs like "Crucify" and "Cornflake Girl". So when I found out she was releasing a new album, I immediately listened to this song and fell in love instantly. That's why it holds the title of being the highest debut of the year and the fastest rise to #1 of the year. There's just so much here to love from the guitar to the piano. She has such a beautiful voice and the lyrics are very touching as well. I haven't listened to the album in full yet, but I plan to get around to it soon!

{Text Only} 38. Perfume Genius - "On The Floor"
Points: 59,149 Peak: #2 Weeks on Chart: 29 Notes: - This song was carried over from 2020. It spent 29 weeks on the chart total, with 16 of those weeks being within the 2021 tracking period.

Next is another discovery, this one from March Madness last year. It's Perfume Genius' "On The Floor" (sent by Daryl the Beryl). It debuted in September of last year and, like "Visitor", just barely missed last year's year-end list. It was one of my favorites though around the beginning of this year. I just love everything about this, especially the lyrics. It's relatable and I can feel the passion in his voice. The music video is amazing as well with beautiful choreography. Amazing instrumental and just such a well put-together song overall. It's a beautiful tune from start to end!

We have another discovery and this one is from March Madness this year. It's "Be Sweet" by Japanese Breakfast (sent by BlurryKyle). I remember really enjoying this the first time I heard it because it has a really nice energy to it. And it's really just a thorough bop. I mean that chorus is infectious and I really like her voice as well. Super catchy tune! I haven't heard Jubilee in full, but I plan to soon, so maybe she'll have another song on my chart soon!

{Text Only} 36. Kero Kero Bonito - "The Princess and the Clock"
Points: 59,736 Peak: #4 Weeks on Chart: 21 2021 Chart Run: 34-26-23-14-10-8-5-4-4-5-6-7-10-14-21-26-32-41-45-44-45-Off
Next is Kero Kero Bonito's "The Princess and the Clock", which is also a March Madness discovery from this year (sent by dremolus - solarpunk), although I'm familiar with Kero Kero Bonito. I haven't heard a ton of their songs, but some of the stuff I heard before this wasn't exactly my cup of tea. But I love this one quite a bit. It's very unique and fun. The production is cool and the chorus is really catchy. There are also some really cool animations in the music video. One of these days, I'll try to get into them a bit more because some of their other recent stuff from Civilisation is quite good! But as it stands, "The Princess and the Clock" is my favorite song from them.

{Text Only} 35. Laura Mvula - "Remedy"
Points: 60,021 Peak: #3 Weeks on Chart: 19* 2021 Chart Run: 27-17-13-12-11-9-12-9-9-8-3-3-7-10-11-17-16-21-26-...
There are several artists who made their first ever debuts on my chart this year, including Laura Mvula. As I was kind of just browsing through for some new music, I stumbled upon "Church Girl" and "Got Me", both of which I enjoy, so I decided to check out her album Pink Noise. "Remedy" was one of my favorites on first listen. The production is pretty killer and the song is quite fun from a musical standpoint. Good songwriting as well. She's also a very talented singer. I've been kind of picky with pop music this year, but this song just feels fresh to me!

{Text Only} 34. Working Men's Club - "John Cooper Clarke"

Next is another March Madness discovery, which is "John Cooper Clarke" by Working Men's Club (sent by Butterflies & Hurricanes). I believe this is the highest ranking song in this list that did not peak in the Top 10, yet it made it here after spending most of its run so far in the Top 20. This is honestly one of my favorite songs that I took out of March Madness as it had me hooked within the first 10 seconds! The instrumental here is quite fantastic! It's a catchy and groovy earworm that I'd love to hear at a club or something like that. It just has that energy that makes me want to dance! Awesome song!

Points: 61,199 Peak: #2 Weeks on Chart: 18 2021 Chart Run: 33-20-12-12-12-6-5-5-2-2-4-4-23-22-22-32-32-44-Off
People who know me know that I tend to be critical of rap music. However, I've been really digging some of the recent songs I've heard from Run The Jewels. I'm not too familiar with their work, but I've heard a handful of songs from RTJ4 and I've enjoyed them quite a bit! Here we have "the ground below", particularly the version with Royal Blood, who I've really gotten into this year as you'll see later in the list. But yeah, everything about this song slaps! The instrumentation, the verses, the chorus, and the lyrics are all done so well here. This is honestly a jam and I think Run The Jewels could possibly become one of my new favorites in rap.

{Text Only} 32. Bleachers - "Stop Making This Hurt"
Points: 61,560 Peak: #2 Weeks on Chart: 15* 2021 Chart Run: 28-19-10-3-2-2-5-4-4-4-7-7-14-18-20-...
Next we have Jack Antonoff as Bleachers with "Stop Making This Hurt". I'm obviously familiar with Antonoff's work and I know a few Bleachers songs, but I did not know about this song until my brother played it for me one day. Then it wasn't long until it became an obsession. This song just has such a feel-good vibe and always puts a smile on my face no matter how my day is. It's like a dose of serotonin every time I hear it. I've listened to it dozens of times and it does not get old. It's just such a fun tune!

{Text Only} 31. ABBA - "Don't Shut Me Down"
Points: 62,345 Peak: #1 (2 Weeks) Weeks on Chart: 14* 2021 Chart Run: 34-24-16-10-5-2-1-1-5-5-9-9-12-12-...
New music from ABBA was not something I was expecting this year, but I am here for it because "Don't Shut Me Down" is a jam! This group has songs that are among my favorite songs of all time. So to see them make their return this year was beyond exciting and I'm so thrilled with how great their new songs are! Considering that Voyage is their first release in 40 years, it's amazing to me to see such an iconic group come back with something new that's still so good. "Don't Shut Me Down" has that classic ABBA feel to it, but still manages to sound fresh. It's a great tune all the way through. With acts like ABBA, Tori Amos, and Tears for Fears, it's really nice to see iconic artists still putting out quality music!

Looks like we're in good shape to finish this before the new year! The third set of extras has been posted! I also have some time right now and the next ten songs are ready to go, so let's do this! Also reminder that if anyone wants to added to or removed from the tag list, just let me know!

{Text Only} 30. The Airborne Toxic Event - "Come On Out"
Points: 63,327 Peak: #8 Weeks on Chart: 56 Notes: - There is a typo in the graphic that I'm too lazy to fix. The song actually spent 56 weeks on the chart, not 57. - This song was carried over from 2020. It spent 56 weeks on the chart total, with 37 of those weeks being within the 2021 tracking period.
{2020 Chart Run:} 23-13-15-15-11-11-11-8-9-13-16-16-19-21-21-22-19-16-19-... 2021 Chart Run: ...-23-23-22-25-21-22-33-33-36-38-37-34-37-36-31-35-35-39-45-38-37-36-42-38-42-45-40-35-34-34-34-38-38-40-42-42-42-Off
If I'm not mistaken, this is the only song in this list that also appeared in the Top 50 Songs of 2020. Last year, "Come On Out" ranked at #46, and now it's up to #30! Longevity is what got the song here as it spent over a year on the chart. But honestly, my love for this song just never faded. It's still such an amazing track. I can't get over how good this is lyrically. It's beautifully written and the lyrics pair well with the instrumentation and the vocals. The music video is a really nice touch as well. There are honestly no other words to describe this song other than amazing and beautiful. I'm sure this is one I'll be coming back to for a long time!

{Text Only} 29. Still Corners - "The Last Exit"
Points: 63,360 Peak: #9 Weeks on Chart: 30 2021 Chart Run: 40-27-18-16-18-17-11-11-11-9-12-12-13-19-18-22-26-32-33-36-43-40-40-45-43-45-44-42-42-40-Off
Next we have Still Corners' "The Last Exit", which is a Wintertime Madness discovery (and another submission from Geometrical ). I remember this being one of my favorite WTM discoveries because it's such an interesting blend of genres. It has this cool Western-type vibe to it that I really dig. The instrumental is really nice. It's very soothing and very pleasant. It's easy to get lost in the music, like what I said about Wolf Alice. And I love the singer's voice. For whatever reason, her voice kind of reminds me of Nanna from Of Monsters and Men. Her vocals are as soothing as the rest of the song, making this a very pleasant listen overall!
