Crazy that out of all the acts who have more #1 hits than Drake: 20 The Beatles 19 Mariah Carey 18 Elvis Presley 14 Rihanna 13 Michael Jackson 12 Madonna 12 The Supremes 11 Whitney Houston 10 Stevie Wonder 10 Janet Jackson 9 Drake
Only Drake had 5 #1 hits spend at least 8 weeks at #1 (he did this with his 6th #1 hit back in 2018). Today, Mariah Carey joins him in that.
Drake is also the only solo artist with 3 or more songs to spend at least 10 weeks at #1 (One Dance: 10 weeks, God's Plan: 11 weeks, In My Feelings: 10 weeks). He's tied with Boyz II Men as the only acts to do that. Mariah Carey has done it twice and every other act has done it once.

Wow! I did not see that coming. "AIWFCIY" is an absolute monster. Holiday songs were 60% of the top 10 despite only 3 days of strong metrics. She has literally excelled at whatever formula was needed to be #1 on the Hot 100. Early in her career she had huge physical sales, Mimi era was huge airplay and now she’s the streaming queen.

I know accuracy and all that stuff matters but these Xmas dominations have grown so boring. There’s only 1 song dominating and she’s the Queen of the charts. What’s your solution though. You can’t exclude one of the most popular songs of all time.

It's not that crazy given that most of those artists had number one hits pre-Soundscan where getting 8 weeks at number one was more difficult

It looks like that will be the case. I'm curious to see at what point, if any, there will be changes to the rules about Christmas song domination. Why would there be?

Wow! I did not see that coming. "AIWFCIY" is an absolute monster. If "AIWFCIY" falls in streams the same 30% Merry Christmas did, it would have over 33 million streams and have a real chance at #1. Seems like you maybe did see it coming.

I think that stat about the number of songs with 8 or more weeks at #1 is less impressive than Drake having 9 #1s since I assume that is the most #1s in the streaming era?

kingvavis I agree with you but I also think it all depends on how you choose to look at it. From that list of names, I'd say Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and Rihanna are the acts who scored the most recent #1 hits (except Drake). Even removing every other name and leaving just those, it's still impressive, no? The Beatles/Michael Jackson had multiple hits with 7-9 weeks at #1 in their time so it's not like it was impossible. Harder? Yes, but what makes what Drake did impressive to me is that until today, he was the only act in history with 5 songs spending at least 8 weeks at #1. There are other hitmakers from his generation like Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift (all with 8/9 #1 hits each) who have scored massive #1 hits and more than 5 #1 hits (and who all started scoring #1 hits as lead acts before him) who haven't done that (that's why I pointed out that Drake did it with his 6th #1 hit). jenglisbe I think both stats are impressive. There were 11 songs with 10+ weeks at #1 in the 90s, 12 in the 2000s and 13 in the 2010s. Drake scored 3 songs with 10+ weeks at #1 from 2016-2018. Every other act in the 2000s/2010s who scored a 10+ week #1 hit only managed to do so once so isn't that impressive as well?

I really can't wait for Christmas songs/albums to fall off again. I really didn't think there'd still be as many as 6 Christmas songs in the top 10 this week. Ugh.

Yeah, I don't know how or why Billboard would put that genie back in the bottle without the entire industry on board demanding it. Wishful thinking on some peoples' parts. They wouldn't do these big write-ups about all these records the Christmas songs are breaking if they took issue with it. They even did a special edition "Queen of Christmas" issue with Mariah on the cover in 2021.

Putting aside AIWFCIY for a second, is anyone else surprised that Feliz Navidad managed another week in the top 10? I honestly thought Industry Baby, Need To Know, or abcdefu had stronger chances of replacing it based on the predictions I've seen.

Every other act in the 2000s/2010s who scored a 10+ week #1 hit only managed to do so once so isn't that impressive as well? It is impressive because you can look at it two ways. One way is that it was harder for the pre-Soundscan artists to get long running number ones. However it was easier for the pre-Soundscan artists to accumulate more number one hits as the turnover was a lot higher, so Drake having 9 number one hits during this era can be seen as more impressive than an artist having more than that pre-Soundscan. That being said, chart records for a chart that has been so inconsistent over the many decades is hard to value that much on paper and requires context usually.

kingvavis Of course. Chart records across decades have to be viewed with context to be properly appreciated.

I mean I just love the fact that 32 years into her record-breaking illustrious career, she STILL has the gorls bothered.

Yes, having 3 songs with 10+ weeks at #1 is impressive regardless. I also wasn't denying the 5 songs with 8+ weeks at #1 is impressive; for only 2 acts to have done it shows it's really rare regardless. I was just saying I don't fully compare that to acts who were big in the 60s, 70s, and 80s because it was much harder then to have long runs at #1.

jenglisbe oh, of course. I believe it was easier to score #1 hits in the 60s-90s but it wasn't as easy to spend as many weeks at #1. Yes, and that isn't even so much to do with the artists themselves as the literal physical nature of the industry back then. When a single sold out the song started a decline on the charts. Supply would literally run out and they could move on to the next single (which made getting multiple number ones easier). Obviously that's not an issue with streaming or even digital sales unless a song is deliberately removed. And to be clear I'm not saying that as a dismissal of Drake's achievements, as people often do on here. His stats are just as impressive to me for this era as the Beatles and MJ and the Bee Gees and Mariah's were in theirs. Whatever the times were like these acts each dominated the landscape like no one else around them.
