And to be clear I'm not saying that as a dismissal of Drake's achievements, as people often do on here. His stats are just as impressive to me for this era as the Beatles and MJ and the Bee Gees and Mariah's were in theirs. Whatever the times were like these acts each dominated the landscape like no one else around them. I agree with this, and it was more of my point; I think at this point it's hard to compare records across generations/decades, but records can still be impressive within the context of their eras. The Beatles getting 20 #1s within such a short time period was impressive and something no one else did, but it's also something that can't really be done now since singles stay on the charts for long. The converse of that is songs have longer runs at #1 now, but since so few artists have multiple singles with long chart runs, what Drake and Mariah have done is still impressive. I just see their achievement in context of the 1990s to now more than pre-Soundscan.

Debuts this week: #79 V - Christmas Tree I know it has “Christmas” in the title, and it was released in December, so this may be a dumb question but… is this song considered a holiday song? I ask because I made a personal playlist of holiday songs that made the Hot 100 this season and I want know if I should include it.

Yeah, I don't know how or why Billboard would put that genie back in the bottle without the entire industry on board demanding it. Because for basically 50 years of the Hot 100's existence, that was pretty much their policy. Not like not allowing most Christmas to chart wasn't standard practice before. And presumably because the songs just reflect seasonal/routine popularity over the years, and less "newer, fresher, and of the moment" popularity, which is what the Hot 100 is mainly designed to capture. Although I will say, if these songs were allowed to chart in years past, they probably wouldn't have charted as highly as now, because the streaming of course didn't exist, the sales weren't there, and even airplay was probably lower, so the popularity they exhibit now through all the available metrics, in which they literally take up the #1 position and most of the top ten, creates a higher burden of logic to advocate for their removal. Yet at the same time, I as well am getting bored with them and it does seem a bit inauthentic and even unfair that they can just so easily score these weeks each year by default. But it's really tough to decide, because the consumption numbers are there, and mostly by consumer choice it seems with the streaming, so it does seem to be what the public wants and is listening to, so I'm just very ambivalent about the situation and just forcing myself to accept what is. I think it's also obvious that if it weren't Mariah topping the chart each year, a lot of us would have very, very different opinions about it (including myself, as I'm also a fan and can admit I'm not immune from this bias).

Nothing is more impressive than Boyz to Men having 3 different songs that topped the Hot 100 for over 13 weeks.

It looks like Levitating and Essence didn’t return. Maybe they did but Billboard chose not to announce it. If not, then it wouldn't surprise me if they both return next week, especially Levitating with its recent sales and radio gains.

Nothing is more impressive than Boyz to Men having 3 different songs that topped the Hot 100 for over 13 weeks. It must've been wild in the 90s to go from a format where no song had ever lasted for more than 10 weeks at #1 to a format where one group could do it 3 times in just over 3 years

There are people who would be able to check the song history before the full chart is revealed, no?

There’s only 1 song dominating and she’s the Queen of the charts. What’s your solution though. You can’t exclude one of the most popular songs of all time. only one song? I see 6 Xmas songs in the top 10 this week. Being in the top 10 is not dominating. Being #1 across four years is dominating. We’re only talking about Mariah and if you look at the billboard Twitter, the Mariah tweets garner way more attention then anyone else and it’s not even close. This is the fairest formula they could have because the rules are the SAME for everyone. If you exclude Mariah when she would have more points would make a mockery of the charts. No single artist has done more to promote the Hot 100 than her.

There’s no point in putting the ties like I’ll Male Love To You or Despacito etc, as they didn’t get to that benchmark first.

There’s no point in putting the ties like I’ll Male Love To You or Despacito etc, as they didn’t get to that benchmark first. It's about which songs had the most weeks #1, not which songs broke the record first. If a new song gets 19 weeks #1 this year it would join Old Town Road as having the most weeks #1 regardless of not doing it first.

For example, Despacito didn’t add anything to it other than tie it. OTR however, did, because it broke the record. And of it’s that way you’re saying it, where are the rest of the songs that made 14 weeks at #1, for example, the Macarena, We Belong Together, I Gotta A Feeling, etc?

If all the songs that had two or more weeks at #1 were included (see the beginning of the list) it would be an exceedingly long list.

Despacito also hitting the record for most weeks #1 ever at the time, is an evolution of the record.... Macarena, We Belong Together, and I Gotta Feeling did not reach the record for most weeks at #1 at the time so thus they would not be an evolution of the record. They were second place. The second most weeks at #1 at the time. Despacito was not the "second" longest running #1 hit just because it hit 16 weeks after another song.

Why are people complaining about the presence of more information? It’s the “evolution of the record,” whether you think the tying songs belong or not, it doesn’t hurt to have them there for additional information. There really isn’t a need to nitpick every single little detail…

Do we know how close this was between Mariah and Adele? I got the stats from Talk of the Charts, but I don't know how to convert these into chart points. Can anyone do the math?
Here was Mariah: 4,900 sales (-39%) 35.4 million streams (-25%) 16.5 million airplay (-49%)
Here was Adele: 9,100 sales (+5%) 15.2 million streams (-10%) 94 million airplay (+7%)

TOTC also says Essence has re-entered. The only surprise here is Billboard forgetting to announce it today.
