Excited to be back cohosting the 43rd Alternative rankdown with wrip and MoD! Last year's rankdown was a blast so I'm glad we're getting to do it again.

As for this year's music, we saw a bit more of a pop punk resurgence, not least evidenced by Travis Barker making a record 4 appearances on the list. This year features even more artist debuts than last year, with 39 artists making their first rock rankdown appearances. Several of those are here thanks to TikTok, such as Nessa Barrett, Tai Verdes, Fousheé, and LILHUDDY, among others. We also have some 90s staples like Green Day, Foo Fighters, Weezer, the Smashing Pumpkins, and the Offspring, who cracked the top 10 more than 27 years after their first top 10 hit, Come Out and Play.

Here's how things will work, for any newcomers:
- All participants will send us a ranked list of the top 100 Alternative songs of 2021.
- Points will be calculated using an inverse point system: your #1 song will receive 100 points, and your #100 song will receive 1 point.
- When all lists are counted and all points tallied up, each song (including everyone’s ranks for the song) will be revealed, from fewest to most points.

A few things to cover (please read):
1. Please listen to all of the songs on the list in their entireties (don't just listen to 30 seconds of a song then skip to the next one).
2. Rank all of the songs from #1 (your favourite) to #100 (your least favourite).
3. Please rank the songs based on your personal preference and not strategically to try and skew the results.
4. PM your list to me ( Leaf ), MoD and wrip (preferably in one group PM, not separately).
5. Please format your lists the same way as the list provided below (but you can send your list with or without numbers at the beginning); it will make our jobs much easier.
6. Even if you have already sent your list, you can PM us any changes you'd like to make until submissions are closed, at which point your list will be finalized.
7. The deadline is January 23 at 11:59 PM EST, giving you 4 weeks to submit. If you think you'll be a bit late, be sure to let us know at least an hour before the deadline so that we don't close submissions while you're working on your list.

Gang of Youths was only on the chart for one week. Chevelle had a better chance of getting on the Alt rankdown than GOY did. GOY is on the AAA rankdown though.

Gang of Youths was only on the chart for one week. Chevelle had a better chance of getting on the Alt rankdown than GOY did. GOY is on the AAA rankdown though.

Alt is just in an awkward transition phase, as the format always is at the start of a decade. The fact that "Without You" is sharing rankdown space with "I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE", "Wait A Minute My Girl", and multiple neo-soul songs is pretty indicative of that.

Just be patient. I think next year could wind up being pretty special.

Yeah, and thankfully there were only like 20 TikTok pop songs on here, the rest seem like genuine alt

Also, what do you think will most likely be #100 on this rankdown and will be bottom 10? The AJR songs and Without You seem like they will be for sure, but idk what else

I suspect we’re going to see a lot of TikTok pop songs in the bottom 10. Overwhelmed and Dancing In My Room, for example. I think the Offspring song will leave earlier than most people would expect an Offspring song to leave, too. Bastille’s “survivin’” is also a strong contender to bottom 10.

I only charted around 15 of these songs. I can honestly say I only cared for 40-45 songs on this list. To makes things worse My bottom 10 could easily be extended to a bottom 30 and were the hardest songs to rank.

I am personally curious about how “Wait A Minute My Girl” will do. It’s the first time in years that a pure Active Rock staple (Foo Fighters don’t count) has made one of these. However, Volbeat did it with a song that sounds absolutely nothing like the rest of their catalog. It’s going to be very interesting to see how it’s received here considering how unique the song is, both on this rankdown and for the band themselves.

As for “Shame Shame” it seems to have gotten a mixed reception at best and for a song that was probably meant to get an easy Alt #1 and then cross to pop, it monumentally failed at the task (even with the excuse of Audacy intentionally blocking the band for arbitrary reasons such as ageism). Much like the Volbeat song I mentioned above, it sounds nothing like the rest of FF’s catalog and that’s gonna create an interesting result I think.

Overall, not a list that had a ton of songs that I'd choose to come back to. Maybe 40% of them were legit. Nothing I absolutely loved. I guess slightly better than in the last few years, but some of this list was really rough to get through.

Unlike the Hot 100 RDs, we rank songs only once a year, a rule we put in place since 2018 to rank more songs, and also because repeats tend to be tanked. That's why the #1 song of this year (Monsters) is not here as we ranked it for 2020. I am the one who makes the lists based on the weekly charts (I usually get the year-end right), and also am responsible for deciding which song will impact which year more. These have to be predicted. I have been wrong on some accounts (Running Up That Hill for 2019 instead of 2020, The End of the Game for the same reason, and this year, possibly Bad Dream this year instead of the next as I really had no idea it would still persevere after 30+ weeks on the chart AND still be at the 14-17 range. The other possible error I made this year was moving Long Way by Eddie Vedder to 2022 thinking it'll beat this year's numbers - it will either barely pass it or just fall short, but will still have enough spins to make the rankdown for 2022.), but for the most part, I have been right. On the brightside (pun intended), for harder predictions, I was right to keep Lilith Czar for this year on active rock, and What You Say for this year for alternative, as both of them have recently peaked. I moved Mood to 2021 and was right to do so as it impacted 2021 more than 2020.

I wonder if "Mountain At My Gates", if we had the rankdowns at the end of 2015 with the same rule, would have been put in 2015, since we wouldn't have known it would suddenly sprint to the top after being at like 20+ weeks and around #15.

Yeah that would have been tricky since it was at week 16 at the end of the 2015 chart year.
