Wild that COMN may still remain Abels biggest debut I know the charts have exactly zero to do with quality, but COMN is so lush, dark and beautiful that I don't have one problem with it being his biggest debut. What a song.

Oh My God and Rolling In The Deep's videos actually share a director and tbh that makes a lot of sense to me

To be fair, Billboard should reduce or minimize airplay's influence by at least 25% and slighty increase physical sales'.
I mean, one cannot look at the performance numbers of this week and think Bruno isn't the #1 song of the week over EOM, and I don't even like Bruno.

girl, that MV's set is just 90% chairs Your point? There was a lot of people dancing around too, a lot of interesting costumes, other props, etc. It's what was done with the chairs that was interesting, and I thought it was an amazing video!! I didn't quite get the narrative though (if there was one), so I'll have to study up on that.

Before I even get into the other part of your post, last time I checked, Bruno didn't have many, if any physical sales either (much like almost all songs now), so not sure how your proposed formula change would help it?

Comments like these are f**ked up to me. Im sorry Iβm over sensitive, but likeβ¦β¦β¦there is a line. Yeah, I get people didn't like her but I think it's messed up to joke about her harming herself. I was more implying she'd hurt other people with her disregard for us by throwing our usernames onto Twitter with no mind that some rabid fan would dox one of us. But tasteless joke either way, sorry.

Just because airplay numbers are down from what they once were, some want to increase streaming's power on the singles chart? Far as I can see, airplay numbers are still larger than streaming numbers. While sales numbers are a far cry from what they once were, at least it's hard facts that consumers paid to purchase that single and that single alone in a transaction. Most consumers purchasing streaming services are not paying for just one track, or even one act (at least there's no way to prove that looking at the info). Yes, terrestrial radio is free for the most part, though its power should not be removed further from streaming, as it's still an important part of the equation (more than sales numbers, overall).

Over in the CHR/Pop daily updates thread, thereβs speculation that an email from AllAccess earlier today, which states that Top 40 ratings are down 30% over the past year due to stale programming, might be why audience updates for that format have been really terrible lately.

Why is it stalling The last callout scores (from mid-December) showed Cold Heart in dead last on Pop. It's pretty hard to push forward in the top 10 without having at least decent callouts. It's just crazy to me, the song is inoffensive as possible, and it's nostalgia-bait. I guess it's just not resonating with pop listeners though?

Sometimes it just takes a while for a song to resonate. At first, SYT had poor call out scores. Heck, Heat Waves ranked near the bottom of callouts all spring and summer. We may just need to give it some time. Cold Heart may move its way up the call outs list.

It's probably the label not him. Still tasteless... like suddenly "Moth" qualifies for the album? I wish people would stop pretending the artist does not know when this stuff happens and agrees to it. Drakeβs Dark Lane Demo Tapes was #2 by like 10k. They did nothing to make it go #1. No tracks tacked on mid week, no remixes, no bundles. Absolutely nothing. Drake is also under Republic for distribution like Weeknd. The reason they did nothing is because Drake did not push them to. Makes no sense for Republic to let their biggest artist lose #1 by 10k, but then go all out when itβs Taylor/Abel in close races. Weeknd also directly owns his masters. This means none of his music can be released without him approving and having direct input. A deluxe edition of his album would be a release he would know about. Thereβs no way you own your masters but arenβt even aware a new version of your album has dropped. Owning masters indicates complete control and input over how your music is released and used.

If you look at "Cold Heart" from the perspective of someone who doesn't know it's a mashup of Elton's original 80s singing and Dua Lipa's modern rendition of songs from the 70s and 80s (which is probably a non-negligible portion of CHR listeners), the repetitious and jumbled-up nature of the lyrics could stand out more, and the difference in audio fidelity between the two vocal takes would certainly be more jarring.

βCold Heartβ is a fascinating case for me. I always felt like it was lazy and uninspired. Elton has released better songs recently that shouldβve been the ones to garner worldwide success. Nonetheless Iβm happy that he hit the top 10 in the U.S. because we need more legacy acts like him to prove you can still obtain chart success after a certain age. Even if Dua helped here. Itβs a good lesson for someone like Madonna to try to emulate. Iβll take βInto the Prayer (Swedish House Mafia Remix)β feat. Lil Nas X if it comes.

I agree, it's a fascinating case me for me to see what it takes for older acts to be taken seriously in mainstream pop music, and apparently sometimes that is animation and a good remix producer.

At least Elton John has tried to remain current/relevant throughout his entire careerβ¦ even this late into his game. I think it has a lot to do with his willingness and interest in keeping up with new and upcoming artists. Most legacy artists have just stopped making/creating/releasing new music altogether. For example, I donβt expect a Billy Joel resurgence any time soon, even if PNAU mashes 8 of his songs together.

That is true; the last new pop music Billy Joel released though, was with the River of Dreams album, and even I was young when that came out.

^Yes- it was common to not credit additional vocalists in some cases, even through the '90s with some hip-hop singles, particularly female acts who sang the chorus/hook.
Ronnie was a great subject when I interviewed her back around 2015. One of my most enjoyable articles to work on. She was great live, too. RIP, RS.

I think that is just a one-off hit where everything just aligned. And cannot be forgotten that despite its success so far, Cold Heart is still only the 4th most streamed song by Elton on Spotify. His catalogue streams are gigantic.

Oh nice, great to see the new AoT theme song appearing. It's a great song IMO. Also, I think it's #3 most streamed alt/rock song for the day? Might debut at least in the billboard rock charts
