When something goes viral off TikTok, that's not people who are already fans of an artist listening to their old catalog. When someone listens to a Spotify playlist curated for a certain mood, genre, or the daily ones Spotify creates, the playlist very often has songs the person hasn't heard before (or at least hadn't consciously picked). I've discovered songs that are old, but new to me, that way and then begin to listen to them as if they are new. But we weren't talking about people discovering old music through TikTok or Spotify curated songs, again that's not what Jukebox was talking about. When they said "new music consumption" they were clearly talking about music that's just been released but you're making it sound like as if they were just talking about consuming music that's new to younger people. The lack of new music consumption is related to people listening to older music. Please stay off my jock; I have enough suitors.

No new hits this week. So WDTAB coming for the 10 weeks? If Stay was peaking with 350+ points right now (instead of six months ago), OTRβs record might be in serious jeopardy.

Another boring week. Only a matter of a week or two before people start complaining that Bruno is a weak #1 (or is that just saved for songs that are reliant on airplay?)
Did acts get scared by The Weeknd or something? If so, joke's on them. Even funnier if they though Ed/Taylor was gonna be a major factor as well.

Jessie Murph (the girl from TikTok who made Always Been You a few months back) has a new song out called Pray that we may have to watch out for - #12 on US iTunes right now (highest of any newly-released song), and while itβs nowhere to be seen on AM as of yet, ABY has had a surprising amount of staying power over there, as it sits just outside the top 100.

Justin Bieber's "Ghost" is also #1 on Today's Top Hits now. Might be finally reaching a good amount of streams. Maybe it can approach top 5?
Love to see a post-album single do so well- wish it was an act I liked better but still.

Love to see a post-album single do so well- wish it was an act I liked better but still. Wow, #1 on pop callouts and #1 on Today's Top Hits. Ghost will probably get a couple months in the top 10 if I had to guess. Do people think Bieber should be worried about over-exposure? He's been releasing music and dominating radio since the start of the pandemic.

(And Ghost has been very lowkey so far - if you don't use radio and now Today's Top Hits odds are you don't even know about the song)

I'm remembering when we were complaining about SYL having less than 300 points when it was #1 and here we have #1 hits that can't even get to 250 points, all while there is almost nothing that anyone is releasing that can shake things up a bit beyond maybe a song or two a week, if that. Radio listening is down, streaming is down (only one song above 1M streams on spotify), sales are down, clearly people aren't interested in consuming what is being released.

If anything, this is making me appreciate how surprisingly decent mainstream country has been so far this year. Sure, we still have a few mediocre songs here and there, and even a couple outright awful ones in AA and Beers On Me, but for the most part, Iβve been enjoying the charting country offerings a lot more than some other genres with presence. I know a lot of you donβt like or care for the genre, but I do suggest you take a listen to songs like You Should Probably Leave, Half of My Hometown, Heart on Fire, If I Was A Cowboy, and Never Wanted To Be That Girl if you want a taste of what Nashville has to offer right now. DISCLAIMER: I'm not Republican, and this isn't intended to bring up a political discussion I think a contributing factor to country music's current dominance is the growing rural Republican pride going on

The pandemic totally played a part in this current lull. Also, trap's fading, and the next big genre isn't clear yet. I think it would be awesome for Hyperpop to blow up, or even more unlikely - Rihanna to comeback

Back in 2016, the year Trump was elected President, country singles were struggling to keep up with all the other genres because they just hadnβt adapted to streaming yet. But now, thanks to Nashville figuring out how to properly promote singles to streaming playlists and keep that audience well before radio really catches on, they have a lot more prominence on the Hot 100 as of 2019-2020. Plus, it helps that Old Town Road became a cultural phenomenon right around the same time.

Other than Wandered in LA he's yet to flop since Yummy And that was more of a flop on Juice WRLD's label, because people are finally tired of them taking advantage of a dead guy

Idk if this is the place to put this but are hot 100 archives just completely inaccessible now for no reason? I like to go through old charts because I find it interesting but now out of nowhere if I even try to look at the 02/12 chart nothing shows up. Hopefully this is a glitch or something on my end instead of them just making it impossible to see older charts

Something happened after the release of CLB. Just before that, Stay was putting up 350+ chart points at its peak, but the top of the Hot 100 was still competitive with songs like Good 4 u, Butter, and even Industry Baby challenging it. After CLB, no other non-holiday song topped 300 points except Stay and EOM (save one week of All Too Well).

It's one thing for charts to be ded in November and December because we can blame year-end marketing patterns and the Christmas lull and the YE countdowns and all that, but this a chart dated for March. Something needs to come alive for the year already.

Nail Tech debuts at #2 on US Spotify with 1.1M streams. Bad Habits would be #9 with both versions combined (original and the new BMTH remix).

Pop radio be like: Here are the new Chainsmokers and Charlie Puth
people: ewww
I think that is the problem. Radio just doesn't play popular new music. Like there is a new Jack Harlow single doing well in streams. Radio should immediately jump on it.

So streaming number suggest Heat Waves is going number one this week? Doesnβt seem like Harlow is big enough to get it and Bruno is declining

Pop radio be like: Here are the new Chainsmokers and Charlie Puth people: ewww I think that is the problem. Radio just doesn't play popular new music. Like there is a new Jack Harlow single doing well in streams. Radio should immediately jump on it. We'd have to eliminate radio deals for that to happen. With the exception of songs like Levitating and Heat Waves getting resurgences thanks to being strong on streaming, or songs being sent prematurely like good 4 u and Peaches because they had so much hype, most radio runs are still driven by the industry. While yes, most of it is done to some radio stations, ultimately they're just doing their job and following the orders of labels. That's why Smokin Out the Window and Shivers will do so well on radio from the get go and a song like family ties or Need to Know had to fight for radio Let's take three songs that have been doing well on streaming and their respective radio runs: Enemy, pushin P, and abcdefu. G AYLE's label (Atlantic) obviously had a radio deal ready for when they manufactured abcdefu to take off, which is why it's been able to grow so much on radio. Meanwhile, Enemy is just now getting it's radio run because Interscope was still busy pushing Follow You on pop so they were late. Finally, Gunna's team doesn't seem to be caring about pushing pushin P on radio despite it's absurdly strong streaming.
