Sounds like some complicated relationship melodrama to me.

For all the talk about radio holding on to songs too long, I just looked at the streaming songs chart and we have songs like Save Your Tears, Levitating, and Sunflower rising this week, with Blinding Lights re-entering the chart. At this point, it's not a radio problem, but a music industry problem. Again, multiple things can be true at once. Someone saying "Radio holds onto songs too long" doesn't mean anything about streaming; they are talking about radio. Someone can think both that radio holds onto songs too long and be discouraged that people stream songs for so long.

Itβs one thing if radio is holding on to songs way too long, but the fact that weβve got songs over 2 and even 3 years old outcharting newer songs on the streaming chart shows that the music industry has a much bigger problem. Itβs pretty clear that most of the releases of the past 6 months have not been connecting with most listeners on any metric. There really should be no reason why songs over 2 and 3 years old are still getting more streams than most newer releases.

To our big fan of the recurrent chart. What would the Hot 100 look like without recurrent rules? Blinding Lights and other songs still in the top 50 and even more things to worry about I suppose
If you look at the global 200 you still see 13 songs that have charted for 77 weeks (the entire history of that chart)
Streaming has no recurrent rules and these days the album chart doesn't either(although it used to)
What it might show is more people other than the 17 year olds streaming the rap album of the week on day 1 are getting Spotify accounts?
Not an industry problem in my opinion -- actually exactly the opposite

As a listener who tends to listen a lot to catalog music I don't think it's a problem that people are holding on to old songs. If new songs are compelling and interesting I think that people will be happy to listen to them. It's up to musicians to create that kind of music, though.

It's impressive to see Ed ranking back to back again in the top 10 with Shivers and Bad Habits. To have two singles each spending at least 17 weeks in the region so far, as well as his album remaining stable in the top 20 and even moving up to #11 this week after 4 months of release, it seems that with each passing week the evidence grows against this album being labeled an under-performance, except for the unfortunate occurrence of The Joker and the Queen, which sadly seems to be a dud. I guess people just really weren't connecting with the song, although I still maintain that it certainly didn't help that Taylor has strangely not even acknowledged its existence or done any type of marketing or promo for it from what I could glean.

The most impressive thing about Ed's singles so far is how huge they're - on paper. If I didn't follow the charts I would believe them to be complete non-events. But then again I don't really use radio or live in the UK, where he has dominated even with random collabs in the last year.
Apologies for the essay this post is gonna trigger from the Ed Sheeran stan.

Well and some of these new songs that aren't doing well could end up being hits down the line; either this year or even in 2028 since that's how things seem to be working more and more.

I think the main reason the new Taylor/Ed song isnβt doing well is they have collaborated three times previously. Same thing happened recently with Ariana Grande/Nicki Minaj recent collaboration, they have also done many songs together and it didnβt do well either. When two artists do too many collaborations it kind of loses its novelty. As a Swift fan myself, Run from Red Taylorβs Version is better than their new song together.

The song is bad. I think that's about it. It was a terrible single choice.
Get Taylor on an Overpass remix and that's a top 10 hit.

There was a period of time where whenever I turned on radio or went out Ed was playing and that's one of the main reasons i am a bit sick of him. Somehow overexposure doesn't affect him here and whatever he puts out radio Jumps on board with

Weeks on chart in top ten:
9 58 14 20 16 33 22 24 35 25
Bruno is still the "freshest of the fresh" compared to everything else.

Keep in mind, Stay didnβt fall below 230 points until its 23rd week on the chart. Just think if KL and JB held off until after the holiday to release Stay (and Fβ- Love 3), Stay might have broken the Old Town Road record.

very interesting read. I'm surprised they didn't bring up the topic of samples and interpolations in current releases, though. from Saweetie's "Tap In" to Latto's "Big Energy," to "7 rings," to Drake's "Nice For What" and Cardi B's "Be Careful," to full-on covers like "Put Your Records On" and "ILY (I Love You Baby)," we've had more of these kinds of hits than ever before in the last couple of years. I'm not in any way opposed to samples, but thought it was a relevant point that they could have included in this discussion when they were talking about recognizing chord progressions of "Someone Like You" and such.

I don't think we've had as many sampled songs in the Hot 100 Top 10/Top 20 before, but I'm not going off of any data here just my perception.

In the mid-90s you had a top 20 with "Fantasy" sampling Tom Tom Club, Coolio sampling Stevie Wonder, "I Got 5 On It" sampling several songs, All-4-One covering "I Can Love You Like That," and Xscape was there with their cover of "Who Can I Run To." Mokenstef's "He's Mine" may be been top 20, too, and it sampled Prince.
