Heat Waves seems to be yo-yoing on Spotify every week. One week it sees decreases to its weekly streaming, the next week it gains. This song is not going anywhere.

Maybe a mandatory retirement rule for Heat Waves and Stay once they reach like 90 weeks. Without it, they may chart until late 2023/early 2024.

Billboard will have to force a recurrency lol Here’s a solution: It takes 18 months after release date for a song or album to go from “current” to “catalog.” 18 months = 52 + 26 weeks = 78 weeks after debut and OUT no matter where it is. And yes, this should be applied to all Christmas songs as well.

In the streaming era, it's the first song to go #1 without being top 3 in sales or streaming.
2006-2012 before streaming songs started, no song topped without being top 3 in sales.

It is just one song on a chart ranking 100 songs. No they won’t force recurrency or make new rules for the sake of taking *one* song off the chart.
Recurrency rules would change if there became dozens of songs with chart runs like Heat Waves, and they saw that as an issue and clouding what the chart should represent in their opinion.
There is always going to be an outlier of its time.
And in this instance recurrency makes no sense as a discussion being this song is *still* peaking. It’s not like it peaked 6 months ago and is just lingering on the chart. Even with recurrency rules they have always specifically tried to make exceptions to songs that are clearly largely growing and have not reached their peak yet. The point of recurrency is to get rid of songs far past their peak, not songs that simply peaked late.

Admittedly, though, there is a tendency for songs to have increasingly long chart runs. Heat Waves would be an obvious case where recurrency rule would not apply because of gains in performance--something we have seen for songs like One Too Many, El Perdon, and others in the past. The charts, though, reflect the music climate as a whole and we live in a climate where streaming and radio are both holding on to songs for a long time and sales is miniscule enough not to make a big difference. The result is what we see.

Even if you take away Heat Waves, there is still Stay, which peaked like 6 months ago and is still in the Top 5 because radio refuses to let this one go. If that’s not enough, Bad Habits is in the Top 10. Yes, the recurrent rules need to be strengthened.

Good for Glass Animals, but what a disaster for music and diversity of charts, I mean soon we are not talking a year in the cgarts but two years and with some Christmas songs forever... This is a disaster.... i bet that this is the last hit for Glass Animals as is finished with mega hits The Weeknd, because you already filled your slot in the charts forever...

By this pace I won’t be surprised if another song in the next few years beats Heat Waves record and has like an 80 plus week climb to 1.

I know the 59 week climb alarms some and we want to ban old songs from being popular in the future.
59 weeks is the chart run but if you measure time from release date to 1st week at #1, not even close
Longest Climbs to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 59 weeks, “Heat Waves,” Glass Animals, hit No. 1 March 12, 2022 35 weeks, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Mariah Carey, Dec. 21, 2019 33 weeks, “Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix),” Los Del Rio, Aug. 3, 1996 31 weeks, “Amazed, Lonestar, March 4, 2000 30 weeks, “All of Me,” John Legend, May 17, 2014 27 weeks, “With Arms Wide Open,” Creed, Nov. 11, 2000 26 weeks, “Everything You Want,” Vertical Horizon, July 15, 2000 25 weeks, “Red Red Wine,” UB40, Oct. 25, 1988
From this list
Red Red Wine was 25 chart weeks but in real time was over 4 and a half years We all know Mariah's climb was 25 years
Other examples not on this list that made the top 10/top 40 and even #1 after years/decades
Old songs can take a while to become popular --- it happens

radio numbers are quite different between Billboard and Kworb . Adele is still #1 on Billboard while down to #6 on Kworb . Glass Animals #1 on Kworb for 15 days and has not reached it on Billboard.

I know, this week's Hot 100 seems kind of fishy. I also question Bad Habits being in the Top 10, and WDTAB being ahead of abcdefu and Super Gremlin.

The fact that Glass Animals are a mere 30 weeks away from Blinding Lights' record and could easily take it by sticking around in the Top 25 until then (especially since its #1 in its 59th week) is crazy. The Top 10 record has been broken on numerous occasions recently but having two songs take the longevity record within a year would be insane, especially with the recurrent rules.
I'm assuming Billboard will let Heat Waves have its run and probably switch up the recurrent rules, maybe they'll lower the threshold for recurreny, like if a song goes lower than #15 or something after 52 weeks it'll be booted off the chart. I don't know.

The genre charts for "Hot Songs" have a recurrency threshold of top 5.
It is one thing to tighten genre charts that much But... the flagship chart being tightened that much may not happen right away or ever. As at one point, the Hot 100 - representing the "most popular songs in the country" will need to be redefined.
So basically, the Blinding Lights record may indeed fall before any rule changes are made

I mean, it's also not just Billboard being fucky with old songs, Spotify right now is filled with old hits. And its not like new music isn't coming out, we've have had plenty of quality music being released this year but it's all being ignored by a general audience. Charli XCX and Tinashe released some great pop tracks this year.
Even megastars like The Weeknd got ignored in favor of older hits, I really don't see anyone shaking up the charts in a significant way aside from like Rihanna or Kendrick.

In other words people like the older stuff a lot more
This isn’t exactly a problem or a billboard crisis
This is what is popular
It is what it is.

We don't need any more recurrence rules lmao. If people are listening to old songs, it's gonna be on the charts. Y'all are acting like Heat Waves and Stay are these songs that aren't even in the Spotify top 200 that are only getting propelled by radio.

and we still hate on it — one, it wouldn't change anything about Heat Waves or Stay, and two, why do we want more recurrency rules? It just makes the chart more inaccurate.

I think a couple people hit on it above. Tighten the recurrency rules now before it's too late, in order to protect the legacy of 'Blinding Lights'

Yikes at abcdefu and Super Gremlin not even clearing WDTAB. Stay joins Circles as the only song to spend its first 34 weeks on the chart. 4 weeks to tie and 5 weeks to set the record. (Stay could pass Circles on the all-time Hot 100 list as early as 4 weeks from now.) this makes no sense. perhaps you should have let this thought marinate in the brain for a bit more time so it was ready?

In fact, I posted the poll when BL was still charting. I just think it’s a waste of time having songs chart in 40s range in Weeks 41-52. Plus, under these rules, SYT (and most likely Levitating) would be in recurrency already. Also, I’m not looking forward to seeing Stay and Bad Habits pull what SYT did post-holiday season.
