that cover sounded gimmicky like something they’d do on American Idol or something It literally was like that. It was his audition song for Britain’s Got Talent. it makes sense then . I didn’t know that

Lil Durk - 7220: 10,270,069 Wait, that’s the Spotify streaming for an entire album? Oh how the times have changed. Six months ago, that would not have been good enough for #1 and #2 on the Spotify songs chart, as Stay and Industry Baby were streaming 12M, 13M on normal weeks. Wow, the Spotify collapse is starting to remind me of digital sales in 2016. That's a terrible take. Nowadays, songs in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Brazil, Mexico, the UK can come close to or pass 1 million daily streams on a regular basis. That is far from a collapse

That image of Stay jumping back to #2 is horrifying Right? Now imagine the ARIA charts where Stay topped the charts in mid October and managed to hit #1 again last month. Trip out on this, Heat Waves was #1 in March 2021 and hit the summit once again and is currently the #1 song on the charts.

If ppl are simply jumping from one streaming service to another, then the cumulative streaming numbers, which are used for the charts, should be similar. Has anyone analyzed that? Is HITS weekly streaming chart fairly accurate compared to what Billboard reveals? I still think the issue is two-fold: 1) the lack of exciting music being released during the past 6 months; and 2) people digging deeper into catalog music.

Something about this chart era feels kinda like a more extreme version of 2003-2004, when the charts felt rather static, and soon thereafter digital sales exploded and shook things up.
It doesn't seem like there's any obvious change coming soon to music consumption habits like there was then, though. But it sure would be nice for there to be an industry shakeup, though. Not just for chart purposes but to actually get a more vibrant pop music scene.

The Grammys are around the corner so hopefully they might help shake the charts up a bit. Although the Grammys boost isn't anywhere what it used to be.

The fact that March is halfway done and they're gonna be rewarding music that is at least 6 months old by the time the show happens doesn't help.
Happier than Ever for example would have gotten a great boost back in January but now it's out of the chart. Maybe LNX can switch between IB and a new single?

The death of digital sales was probably one of the primary reason why the chart had become much more stagnant. With the way that sales were a "once and done" kind of thing, it will always be the metric with the greatest amount of rapid movement compared to radio and streaming. After all, one person buying a song once then playing it 500 times over the course of ten weeks will only be counted once, while streaming will count all 500 spread over than ten weeks.

It’s also wild the way longevity has changed on Billboard
Like even a song like Bad Habits pre-Closer would be written up as once in a generation longevity and now it’s like… meh nothing compared to Stay and Blinding Lights
But at the same time, I don’t see Old Town Road’s record going anywhere anytime soon for most weeks at number one (not counting AIWFCIY), and Easy on Me is the only real 10 week hit we’ve had since The Box which feels like a song from an entirely different era
Like 2-10 is crazy stagnant but 1 is way less so

Stay didn't drop below that point total until Week 29 or 30 in its run. This shows that if Stay was released a little later, it might have beaten the OTR record, and maybe even by a wide margin. Believe it or not, Stay lost some races for #1 when it had point totals like 302 (PTD), 360 (Butter), 341 (My Universe), and 331 (Industry Baby).

Lol at everyone breathlessly talking about Sweetest Pie in last week’s thread talking about it being a sure fire number one, even talking about it being the year end number one 😂

Cody Johnson should hit #1 on all-genre Digital Sales chart. Good for him.

I don't understand why those in the 2-10 range don't even try to make a run for the #1 position when the points for said #1 are so weak. I mean a high profile remix of Super Gremlin or Ghost or That's What I Want or Abcdefu would grab them the #1

It had 14 weeks of at least 300 charting points (no song has recorded a 300-point week post-holiday) and 28 or 29 weeks with more points than the current #1 (Heat Waves) this week.

It looks like songs from 2009-2014 are being discounted on iTunes. Seeing these songs on the Top 100 of the iTunes chart brings back memories of peak digital sales era: Poker Face Just Dance Dark Horse Call Me Maybe Moves Like Jagger Party In the U.S.A. Counting Stars Bad Romance Roar Bang Bang Firework Cooler Than Me I'm Yours When I Was Your Man

I feel like a lot of the recent releases fall into the category of "B-lister Sweepstakes" (artist with little recent chat success trying to take advantage of the slow period). -Katy Perry -Camiela Cabello -Kodak Black -Nicki Minaj -Charli XCX -Charlie Puth -Tate McRae (a bunch of underperforming singles since you broke me first) -Normani (1st album supposedly soon, inconsistent success)
Anyone else I'm missing? Or anyone who fits this category who should try releasing something? I could see Lizzo, Halsey, Post Malone, or Shawn Mendes trying something soon)
