Is there an industry rule stating that artists will get blackballed if they release songs that are longer than 2 minutes? What's with all these 1/2 minute songs? I was just starting to get into As It Was and it came to an abrupt end. I thought something was wrong with my phone and had to check to confirm that the song had actually ended. I had the same issue with Latto's album which has 13 tracks with a runtime of 32 minutes. I also just checked and the runtime for Tate McRae's forthcoming album is 33 minutes with 13 songs. Go figure. These new artists are mad lazy.

You can get more streams per hour with a 2 minute song than a 4 minute song
Average length of a song in the current Hot 100 top 40 btw is 3 minutes 12 seconds

People will listen to a song they love over and over again regardless of how long it's runtime is. Shape of You is the most streamed song on Spotify and it has a runtime of 3 minutes, 54 seconds. Even if Blinding Lights eventually overtakes it, it has a runtime of 3 minutes, 20 seconds. There are songs that are 4 minutes long that top the charts for weeks on end and garner billions of streams and the artists making these songs all know that. Many of them have just become lazy. That's really all there is to it.

I will say things like this can be cyclical, so hopefully longer songs come back around. I don't care about time length as much as I want songs to have a bridge, pre-chorus...something to shake it up! It is possible to have two versus plus a bridge in a 3 minute song (see The Supremes' "Come See About Me"), which isn't lazy to me like just doing a verse-chorus and no bridge or something.

Old article - but relevant to the topic
CHART BEAT 06/4/2019
Billboard Hot 100 Top 10s in 2019 Are, On Average, 30 Seconds Shorter Than Last Year Streaming algorithms appear to be one factor in the reduction.
BY GARY TRUST
As previously noted, Lil Nas Xβs βOld Town Road,β atop the Billboard Hot 100 for a ninth week, became the shortest No. 1 hit by song length since 1965, running just one minute and 53 seconds in its original version. Its Billy Ray Cyrus remix still clocks in at under three minutes (2:37).
Elsewhere in the Hot 100βs top 10 are such blink-and-youβll-miss-it hits (if your ears could blink) as Post Malone and Swae Leeβs βSunflowerβ (2:38), Postβs βWow.β (2:29) and Sam Smith and Normaniβs βDancing With a Strangerβ (2:51).
A trend toward shorter hit songs has become evident in recent years. In 2017, Lil Pumpβs βGucci Gang,β running 2:04, became the shortest Hot 100 top 10 since 1975, while, in 2016, Piko-Taroβs βPPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen)β made history as the shortest Hot 100 entry ever: 45 seconds long.
The shrinking of hit songs is even more acute in 2019. Here are some notable stats about the length of Hot 100 top 10s this year (among songs that reached the region for the first time in 2019), according to Hit Songs Deconstructed, which analyzes the compositional characteristics of top 10 Hot 100 hits.
In 2019, the average length for Hot 100 top 10s is a brisk 3:07, a drop of 30 seconds from 2018βs average of 3:37. That contrasts with recent years, as the average top 10 song length fluctuated by only 11 seconds (from 3:32 to 3:43) over 2015-17.
Songs under three minutes account for 39% of all Hot 100 top 10s in 2019, a major increase in share. Top 10s that concise gradually grew in prominence from 2016 through 2018, from 4% of all top 10s to 9% to 12% in those three years, before surging more than threefold year-over-year so far in 2019.
The top two longest-leading No. 1s this year both make the category, as the nine-week command (and counting) of βRoadβ bests Ariana Grandeβs eight-week reign with β7 Rings,β which runs 2:58.
Among hip-hop hits exclusively, year-to-date 2019, the average length for Hot 100 top 10s has plummeted to just 2:48, a drop of 51 seconds from the 2018 average. The average length of hip-hop top 10s actually increased by 38 seconds from 2015 through 2017 (3:13 to 3:51) and then dipped by 12 seconds (to 3:39) in 2018, before its 2019 freefall.
Similar to the rise in share of all-genre top 10s under three minutes, as noted above, such hip-hop hits increased slightly in presence in recent years, from 9% of all hip-hop top 10s in 2016 to 11% in 2017 and 15% in 2018. This year? Theyβve skyrocketed four times over to a 60% majority.
Short & Sweet Success: At Under 2 Minutes, Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' Is Shortest Hot 100 No. 1β¦ What seems to behind the stark trend? Perhaps, shorter audience attention spans in a TL;DL multimedia landscape. Also, possibly, an aim for more robust streaming totals across artist catalogs, as shorter songs translate to streams of more individual songs within a given listening period.
Additionally, streaming service algorithms appear to play a factor in the recent reduction of average hit song lengths. Those in the industry contacted suggest that digital service providers pay close attention to play-through rates, so, naturally, a shorter song has a better chance of being streamed fully than a longer one. As those stats can help determine playlist placement, artists, management and label A&R departments seek to capitalize.
Meanwhile, on-the-go listeners can enjoy the perk of squeezing in more songs in a particular session, such as a commute or workout.
βWriters and producersβ time is fractured like everyone elseβs, and song length weighs into the tracks theyβre working on,β says one industry source. βThey are definitely taking into consideration the culture we live in.β

Both "To Be Loved" and "Love Is A Game" are 6:43, which means that you can stream five (2 - 2,5 minutes) songs from Lil Nas' MONTERO in that same period.

That's really all there is to it. Even if it's not the only factor that determines a song's success, song length still matters. Someone can play a 6 minute song over and over again if they love it (I certainly have), but they can play a 3 minute song they love twice as much in the same time frame. Expanding to the top 20 most streamed songs on Spotify, about half of them are the same length as Blinding Lights or shorter (and Blinding Lights is still fairly short so like)
As for Harry, his last album had a couple songs that were under 3 minutes and a couple that were over 6, and the rest were mostly in between. I don't think it's really about laziness.

Will the next great chart debate be about whether chart points should be based on minutes streamed rather than number of streams?
If itβs technically feasible, then that doesnβt seem crazy to me, but I think it should be done in tandem with including UGC again.
Although that probably means that βoh noβ tiktok song would be in its 80th week at number one.

Definitely seen this suggested before, or for Spotify to make the cutoff where playing a song counts as a stream something longer than 30 seconds.
I guess it could result in people intentionally bloating their songs (and music videos? realizing i'm clueless on how youtube calculates their streams) to increase the runtime. Or even more remix abuse. But it doesn't feel like a terrible idea.

Heat Waves, the most streamed song on Spotify overall right now, is over 3.5 minutes long and contains a bridge. Drivers License is just over 4 minutes long and the original album version of Happier Than Ever comes close to 5 minutes, and both songs still appear on the US Spotify chart to this day. The former is still the only song to spend multiple days with over 5M streams in the US despite its relatively long duration.
People will gravitate to and stream longer songs, those songs just need a magnetic βitβ factor that will keep people coming back, just like any pop song thatβs ever charted before. I feel like a lot of the recent big releases are missing this point and are just composing the songs by algorithm, as in βif itβs catchy and short and ends abruptly, itβs a hit.β And I think the general public is starting to see right through that if recent underperformers like Sweetest Pie are any indication.

Will the next great chart debate be about whether chart points should be based on minutes streamed rather than number of streams? I think I've suggested that at one point. Plus if they did that, they could just count the amount of time someone listens to a song, so if they play it for 30 seconds and skip to the next one, only that 30 seconds would count rather than the entire length of the song because they listened to the "minimum amount."

Wow ok, As It Was is 2 minutes, 46 seconds, that is NOT THAT short, surprised this has sparked such a reaction. There are other hit songs that are much shorter, including the original version of Old Town Road, which is 1 minute, 53 seconds. In the early days of Rock 'n Roll, the 50s/early 60s, most hit songs were only about 2 to 2 1/2 minutes. Like someone said before, a lot of it is probably cyclical. Not every song needs to be this like 7.5 minute It's All Coming Back to Me Now-type power ballad.

Not every song needs to be this like 7.5 minute It's All Coming Back to Me Now-type power ballad. Which nobody literally said anywhere, but there's a difference between making a complete song that ends up being under 3 minutes and forcing a song into a time of under 3 minutes. It's less about the fact they're shorter and more about the fact that songs very often ending up sounding incomplete or rushed. A recent example that comes to mind for me is Avril Lavigne's Love It When You Hate Me, a great pop/rock song, but it feels distractingly rushed, especially the first verse and pre-chorus, which both sound like they were cut in half. The song itself clocks in at under 2m30s I think. LNX's Call Me By Your Name is another example where we got an extended version that took the song from 2m18s to 2m50s by adding a bridge and a final chorus and it made the song 10x better. All in all, a lot of pop songs over the last couple years come off sounding half-assed because of it and it sucks because many of them are on the way to being really great.

Shorter songs have been the trend for years at this point (at least since 2019 as that article upthread pointed out), i'm mostly surprised people are apparently just now noticing/getting annoyed by it.

To me, the only recent hits that felt like it went on longer than itβs length was Lil Nas Xβs Thatβs What I Want (2:24), and Cardi Bβs Up (2:37). If you could make your song feel like its 3-4 mins when its not, you have done something right. Conversely, there are songs that make me feel like they go on for only 2-3 mins when in reality its longer such as driverβs license (4:02), Fair Trade (4:51), Happier Than Ever (4:57) and Take My Breath (Album/Extended Version) (5:39), and i like those kinds of songs even more.

Is there a second big energy remix? Different cover and all on iTunes: Big Energy (Remix) [feat. DJ Khaled] Latto & Mariah Carey Release Date: March 28, 2022
Big Energy (feat. DJ Khaled) [Remix] Latto & Mariah Carey Release Date: March 31, 2022
Oh wait, it might just be explicit? Eh. I don't see why one has remix before khaled's name and one after, but ok.

For those who use Apple Music:
Did they just decided to say fuck it to the new album releases playlist they've always had? I'm not seeing it in my Apple Music nor is the Upcoming Releases list there anymore. I used to check these every week as I've occasionally come across new music from artists I like but don't check for, plus I often sample songs from artists I don't know and have discovered some great albums this way. It's like they don't want anyone to find new new music now. I'm starting to think it's a conspiracy.

It has been a recurring topic in these threads, just not every week because then we wouldn't be able to talk about "Stay" and "Blinding Lights" and how dead the chart is.

Girl Crush is really just about jealousy that her ex is with another woman) I think Little Big Town left the lyrics intentionally vague enough that yeah you could read it as that and a lot of the straight country audience would read it as such, but if there's even a doubt that either of the Little Big Town women are queer it reads super, super gay It's like Nights With You by MΓΈ, likely it was not intentionally gay, but any queer person hearing it can easily take it on to be a gay song and that's pretty beautiful and should be respected, especially given how few songs are popular where you don't need to change pronouns / genders to make them queer I Kissed A Girl is super straight though lol, there's no ambiguity there Reading the lyrics of Girl Crush again, I can see that, especially since there are no he/him pronouns so you could frame it within a queer context But idk, it the song still bugs me since at least in Nights With You, it still has love of an active desire: she wants to spend the night with the person because she likes them. In Girl Crush, even through a gay lens, it's more about wanting an ex back through another girl.

If Harry debuted at #2 on Spotify with 5 hours of streaming then he's likely aiming for a #1 debut on the charts, especially with the song getting great reviews. Hopefully this signals that we'll finally be seeing songs from this year becoming hits, especially with Jack's album on the horizon and Out Of Time getting a proper push
