are the Big Energy remixβs streams counted separately from the original on Spotify, or are they merged? They are separate.

^ Damn that's really tragic, so young, and he's leaving behind a wife and two very young kids too. He seemed to have kept up hope through the whole ordeal though, and even wrote a book that will be released in July about finding hope in tough situations, so it sounds like that will be inspiring.

But why are we assuming that Justin himself could pull a Bieber? Remember, that, aside from Peaches, most of the Justice singles performed pretty poorly and Stay didn't debut at #1. What I think truly matters is less the name recognition of the artist's and more how well the songs actually stick with people. Sweetest Pie won't be the YE #1 not because Dua isn't relevant, but because the song was bad. That is also why Sacrifice was an underperformance - it didn't connect with people the way at least three other songs did during the album drop week. People need to genuinely like a song for it to be a smash with big longevity Um, no, that's just factually inaccurate. I'm by no means a Justin stan, and yes his singles didn't and definitely aren't assured to all debut at #1 and I don't necessarily care too much whether they do or not, but you cannot just ignore Ghost and Holy and say they weren't big top 10 hits, as well as Lonely and Anyone being pretty solid top 40s. And just because Stay didn't "debut at no. 1" we should completely disregard that it's one of the longest-running top 10's of all time and will undoubtedly boost his charting power? I've just seen it time and time again these last couple years, the way some people say he somehow still doesn't have a hugely-successful charting presence is really an alternative facts-level type of denial. Justin Bieber is being used in the context of big debuts, so his singles not being #1 debuts - aside from Peaches - is relevant to the discussion. To shake up the charts, we don't need a solid top 40 hit. We need a series of massive peaks and decent longevity near that peak - and Lonely or Anyone just aren't that.

I think most people can reasonably agree, though, that Stay would have probably been a #1 debut if not for the BTS mass buying. Stay would have easily been the longest running #1 of 2021 without mass buying, as it would have probably been #1 every week from its debut until Easy On Me with the obvious exception of CLB week. (Aside from that, the only other weeks that were questionable were the IB and My Universe debut weeks.)

That isnβt entirely true though. G4U was above it at #2 when Stay debuted at #3. Also why canβt we all just appreciate its run the way it went and not how its supposed to go.

Her legacy is undeniable, I'm a huge fan of hers as well. It's just that she often tries to be a current artist with a lot of these tracks she puts out, which there's nothing really wrong with, but it's just that this puts expectations very high, and many here were speculating this would rocket into the top ten or even become her 20th #1. I agree. Although with the current situation in pop music, and streaming data suggesting people are getting more and more interested in listening to past music rather than new hits songs, perhaps some of the old pop stars could have unexpected success by acting like current artists. In the UK last year they had hit songs by Nightcrawlers, Elton John, ATB, Boney M, Colin Hay, Tiesto (who's kind of had hits every few years the whole time, but still), now they have one by Ashanti. And I think having an artist on a song who peaked in a previous era helps with the algorithms, as the people who are listening most to 00's R&B will eventually have the new song with Ashanti credited come up in an AI-compiled playlist, or it will come up on autoplay at some point. And likewise the people who listen to a lot of 90's dance music would have been fed the new songs with Nightcrawlers and ATB credited by the algorithms. And the UK also has 7 old songs in their Spotify top 50 today (Frank Ocean, The Killers, Dave/Fredo, Tom Odell, Arctic Monkeys, Pharrell, Foo Fighters). They're near the bottom, but that's a LOT, something we wouldn't have seen 5 years ago, and they're all for different reasons (it's not just a one-off thing after an award show ceremony, this is becoming the new normal now). The phrase that they use is actually catalogue music, and they have that defined as anything that has been available commercially for at least eighteen months or so. There is a misconception on here that they are referring to The Beatles, Bon Jovi etcetera when they refer to catalogue songs surging in streaming when that is not true. They are referring to Frank Ocean's Lost, All of the J. Cole songs, Kanye West songs, Sweater Weather etcetera that are high on streaming services. Even Blinding Lights is considered a catalogue song at this point, and that is what they mean with that phrase when they speak about catalogue music in American streaming

Yes, that's quite correct. Anything that falls under the "recurrent" rules is itself a catalog song.

That "As It Was" bit immediately reminded me of A-ha's "Take on Me." Same! I have another question about the "Big Energy" remix. The remix won't be the credited version on the Hot 100. If the remix sold more than the original version, will that version get the credit on Digital Sales or does the album version get credited everywhere?

Oh no we don't need another Take on Me cover
In general, all those 80s replicas need to go.

Look at the Billboard 200 any given week and you'll see Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Elton John, Nirvana, Michael Jackson, Hall & Oates, Journey, Sublime, Guns N'Roses, Bob Marley, and yes, the Beatles and Bon Jovi. And that's not just because of vinyl sales. Older listeners are finally coming around to streaming and younger listeners are getting into older artists.

^In general, it's older male acts. Not surprising, but would be nice to see some variety.
Not into Harry Styles much, though a chart shakeup with new blood is overdue, so I hope it does very well.

(Aside from that, the only other weeks that were questionable were the IB and My Universe debut weeks.) to both of your claims: good 4 u exists Okay, Iβll concede the first point. But even then, the second point is valid. Even if G4u beat out Stay in Stayβs debut week, there is no scenario where G4u finishes with more weeks at #1 than Stay (or even Easy On Me). Stayβs debut week was G4uβs 9th week on the chart, and its final one with more than 300 charting points. It was unlikely G4u was spending any more weeks at #1 after that, mass buying or not. (No way G4u was beating songs like Stay and IB after that.) Also, keep in mind, that Stay had 13 more weeks with 300+ charting points after its debut week. Even if you account for the CLB week and the My Universe debut, Stay would have finished with 11 weeks at #1 without mass buying. That still beats Easy On Me and G4u. No matter how you slice the cake, Stay was bigger than G4u (this argument was settled on Pulse about 6 months ago, and I donβt want to beat this dead horse again).

Not "Stay being bigger than G4U"
Current Hot 100 top 10s are already stagnant. So, no need to bring a 6 months old topic again.

I have to admit while I still don't care for the song, the fact there's that a sapphic song is a big hit on streaming and is getting airplay is something I really like
(potentially dicey) Question: what was the last top 40 hit that was explicitly about gay love between a woman? (and before anyone says them: I Kissed a Girl and Girl Crush are NOT about gay love. IKAG explicitly says "don't mean I'm in love tonight" and Girl Crush is really just about jealousy that her ex is with another woman)

Get Into It (Yuh) fifth single confirmed! I really hope Doja performs this one at the Grammys on Sunday.

(potentially dicey) Question:Β what was the last top 40 hit that was explicitly about gay love between a woman? (and before anyone says them: I Kissed a Girl and Girl Crush are NOT about gay love. IKAG explicitly says "don't mean I'm in love tonight" and Girl Crush is really just about jealousy that her ex is with another woman) Cool for the Summer maybe?

Yeah I asked in another server and they also said CFTS. I guess it's coded enough to be a song about same sex love between women
