Bryan winning over Terri and LeAnn is more than understandable, he was coming off of two huge hits. Winning over Shania though, woof. That had to be laughable at the time, and it's downright embarrassing now. The country industry never truly embraced Shania, and sadly this was just another example of that. Considering the huge heights that she reached, she hardly has any (American) country music awards to show for it. It’s so interesting to see her be so widely embraced NOW, frequently honored with achievement and legacy type awards, when they literally just used her name to draw in ratings during her prime. I remember laughing when she would be nominated for like only Album of the Year (and then lose, despite selling 6 million copies that year).

I remember laughing when she would be nominated for like only Album of the Year (and then lose, despite selling 6 million copies that year). The industry definitely never fully embraced her at the time. Her nomination history is interesting, with these being for The Woman in Me and Come on Over: 1995 CMAsSingle of the Year ("Any Man of Mine") Horizon Award Video of the Year ("Any Man of Mine") 1996 ACMsAlbum of the Year (The Woman In Me) - winner Single of the Year ("Any Man of Mine") Female Vocalist New Female Vocalist - winner 1996 CMAsFemale Vocalist Song of the Year ("Any Man of Mine" - so odd how songs can be nominated in multiple years) 1997 ACMsFemale Vocalist 1998 ACMsAlbum of the Year (Come On Over) 1998 CMAsAlbum of the Year (Come On Over) 1999 ACMsEntertainer of the Year Single of the Year ("You're Still the One") Female Vocalist (She received a special Double Diamond Award, too) 1999 CMAsEntertainer of the Year - winner Female Vocalist 2000 ACMsEntertainer of the Year - winner Female Vocalist The ACMs were a bit better to her than the CMAs. It was the first nominations cycle for Come on Over where she only got AOTY nods. Having said that, the 1990s were a prime time for women in country. When Twain wasn't nominated for CMAs Female Vocalist in 1998, the nominees were Trisha, Faith, Patty, Martina, and Lee Ann. It's not like any of those was a weak nominee. To me what is more surprising is the lack of Single/Song nods for "You're Still the One" and some others. It's also wild she never got a single Video of the Year nod.

This top 20 is about as strong as can be, imo! I can think of like 30 more songs that also deserved to be here, but that doesn't mean there is anything left that doesn't deserve to be this high!
Now, this next trek down to the top 10 is going to be paaaainful... While there may not be anything left that I question seeing in the top 20, there are definitely songs here that deserve the top 10 more than others, so hopefully we can get them more or less right...
Glad to see George is dominating this top 20, like he deserves!!! This was such a great year for him! "Blue Clear Sky" is the only one that I am confident in making the top 10 in a list this strong, but I'm hoping that he can be the only artist to have multiple songs in the top 10 :)

Also, since it wasn't mentioned in the Extras, I need to go ahead and give some love to this epic steel-guitar-driven jam!!! "Swingin' Doors" is such a catchy, fun song. I just LOVE this sound on Martina While I of course enjoy her entire career, the Wild Angels era sound is the one that I have found myself wishing she would go back to and explore a little further as I have gotten older. I really wish this could have been in this rankdown. I know it's hard because sooooo many more songs hit the chart in the '90s than they do nowadays. But even though it was the "flop" of this album, it was still a moderate hit, and actually did about as much damage on the charts as something like "Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore)" (Even though Shania's song made the top 30, they had very similar runs otherwise). Anyway, I doubt it would have done any better than "Phones Are Ringin'" did in this rd, but I still love it, and hopefully others do too!!

Thanks for posting that! I had meant to include that in one of the showcases featuring extra songs throughout the year and forgot to put that in a playlist I made for all of those songs so that I WOULD remember lol. "Swingin' Doors" was always on the short list of songs that I was going back and forth on and when I opted to exclude that one I knew you'd be coming for me! We've covered a lot of ground over the years with Martina and I felt like songs such as that have already been given their due, so in the end I had to make some hard cuts to keep the list trimmed down to 120 songs. Anyways, as you know you can't please everyone here and just have to roll with those punches .

"Someone Else's Dream" was released in January 1996 as the third single from Faith Hill's sophomore album It Matters to Me and peaked at number 3 on the country charts. This only made the top 25 in the middle of its run as before that it briefly dipped outside of the top half. That moment came when it picked up its first of three rankings outside of the top 60 from nathanalbright. In fact, its two lowest rankings would both come early on with the majority of the group all placing this within their top 45. Seven of those all happened to be top 20s and top 30s with someguy being the lone participant to rank it inside their top 15. Thanks to that late support, this managed to find its way into the top 20 near the end of its run and only settled back one spot in the final moments when LBTrocks slid in with its lowest ranking.

The next song to exit likely will come as a surprise to mean especially considering when I'm sure this was expected to at least be a top 15 contender. Alas, it wasn't and was mostly held back from a lone bottom 10 ranking. This is also the first song to leave that has SIX top 10 rankings!

"I Can Still Make Cheyenne" was released in August 1996 as the third single from George Strait's album Blue Clear Sky and was another Top 5 for him that fall. This would pick up its two highest rankings early on into its run with nathanalbright placing this as his runner-up followed by top 3. While that was good enough to bring this into top 10 contention, it would be short-lived as it eventually dipped back outside of the top 25 altogether. That would happen only twice over the course of the rankdown as those dips both coincided with its lowest rankings with the first being a lone bottom 10 from toomuchboy with someguy following shortly thereafter with a near bottom 30. It was able to rebound somewhat in the last half where it eventually hovered just in and around the top 20. That's despite this amassing SIX top 10 rankings overall with four of those all coming from within the top 5 with those two additional being from kw9461 and bboat11. In fact, only four of its rankings came from outside of the top 60 altogether.

"You Win My Love" was released in January 1996 as the fifth single from Shania Twain's album The Woman in Me and became her third No. 1 hit at country radio. This had quite the rough start here as all three of its lowest rankings came early on into its run. In fact, only two additional non-top 50 rankings would follow that with the majority placing this either in their top 10 or 20. It might also come as a surprise then that its lowest ranking came from fellow Canadian Kanenrá:ke who placed this all the way down inside his bottom 20. That would be the only time this spent outside of the top half as it was able to rebound and once it found itself inside the top 30 would remain there for the entire last half. Five participants in all lose a top 10 with both ccarter1023 and someguy placing this just a spot shy of their top 5.

"Time Marches On" was released in March 1996 as the second single and title track from Tracy Lawrence's fourth studio album and was the 15th chart single of his career. It spent three weeks at Number One on the Billboard country charts in mid-1996, becoming the longest-lasting Number One hit of his career. It also received a Single of the Year nomination from the Country Music Association in 1996 as well as a Song of the Year nomination for both 1996 and 1997. While this was a very early top 5 contender here, it quickly was pushed to the back of the top 30 when a lone bottom 20 ranking from nathanalbright came along. By the middle of the rankdown, however, it regained its top 20 status where it would remain for the duration of its run. In fact, this all but looked to safely remain in the top 15 until .indulgecountry slid in towards the tail end with its second lowest ranking and one of only two outside of the top 60. This amassed twelve top 50 rankings overall with castleoblivion26 placing this in his top 5 followed by both myself and Kanenrá:ke in the top 10.

"Believe Me Baby (I Lied)" was released in July 1996 as the lead single from Trisha Yearwood's sixth studio album, Everybody Knows and was her fourth single out of five during the course of her career to reach number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Thirteen participants in all placed this somewhere within their top 50 with only four others ranking it outside of that. Of those, gardyfan's bottom 20 ranking would be its lowest and came very early into its run giving this plenty of time to recover. Rebound it did as once it found its way into the top 20 it would remain their for the duration of its run. This even looked as though it just might stay within the top 15 until its second lowest ranking from CoJoFan pushed this back some in the last quarter. Five participants overall lose a top 10 with ccarter1023 becoming the next to see their #1 song depart.

Wow. I thought Trisha was a shoo-in for the top ten, or at least close to it. Also thought "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" would make the top 15. Here's what I think will miss the top ten: I Think About You Wild Angels When Boy Meets Girl Lonely Too Long? The Fear of Being Alone?

"You Win My Love" is one of Shania's worst singles, surprised it did so well here.
"Believe Me Baby" is terrific.
