I don't even remember how some of these songs went now. Like, who even is Paul Brandt?Summoning our fellow Canadians 🌺CountryLineDancer and Kanenrá:ke for this one lol Well, I did make you rank his song in the 2018 YE ranking, but given your ranking, not too surprised that you don't remember + his newer materials don't really sound like his classic ones, so #21 Paul Brandt - All About Her

I'll keep it light this time. Man, I was hoping not to see David Lee Murphy this soon; now I'm slightly more worried about his other songs, which are better and did do better on radio (deservedly so imo). At this point, I only see "The Road You Leave Behind" making the top half, meaning that I should expect to lose a top 20 or even a top ten soon. Also sad to see "That Ol' Wind" and "Long As I Live" out already. I guess I'm a sucker for piano ballads? I knew that "Whole Lotta Gone" would stall out somewhere in the bottom 40 (one of my favorite discoveries when we did his RD some months back), but not surprised to see "Bigger Than the Beatles" still hanging in there. The latter should easily make the top half, with a metaphorical bet on the top 40. Relieved to see "I Do" out first; "My Heart Has a History" has become more of a jam as time went on despite the quirky music video. I like Lee Roy Parnell more often than not, but "Heart's Desire" just sounded weird compared to his other hits imo. Most of everything else wasn't too far removed from where I ranked them, even though "By My Side" never clicked with me. Sorry folks.

John Michael Montgomery is overhated on Pulse. I absolutely loved him growing up, and while not as passionate about his output now, I still have fond memories.

Ok some catching up to do!
Never surprised to see Sawyer Brown out early as they don't seem to be all that well received round here! I tend to really enjoy them but the two songs from this year are not among my favorites from them so it doesn't sting like it usually does.
John Michael Montgomery is not someone I ever really get excited for outside like 4 songs, none of which were included here. "Cowboy Love" and "Long As I Live" are not songs I particularly ever want to hear. "Ain't Got Nothing On Us" is my favorite here from him but I totally understand why it did bad on radio and here!
I really enjoy Billy Dean's 90's albums a lot...except "That Girl's Been Spyin' On Me" it's soo cheesy to me I can't.
Alabama remains one of my least favorites and I really don't like "The Maker Said Take Her" glad it didn't go too high here.
Vince is always tanked but "Worlds Apart" is such a pretty song!
Garth is always hit or miss with me. Some of his songs are among the best of the 90's and one of them is still in. "The Change" could work with someone else singing it, same with "That Ol' Wind".
I love Diamond Rio but "It's All In Your Head" is one of my least favorite singles from them and I couldn't support it any higher.
I like everything Mila Mason put out, but she never had a strong identity to me. All her stuff just makes me think what if someone else sang it.
I always loved "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" by Eddy Arnold and Neal does a good version here!
Lee Roy Parnell was always someone I thought was amazing but felt like working in the mainstream was restricting what he should sound like! "Heart's Desire" is just different enough to show some of his promise!
Love Lorrie Morgan and always thought of her husbands she duetted with her and Jon actually sounded the best together! The song is not her best ballad by a long shot but hearing them together always makes me return to it!
and Paul Brandt! after his two hits in the U.S. he remained huge here in Canada! I adore all his albums up to Risk. "I Do" while his biggest hit may be my least favorite of his U.S. singles. His other song I hope can survive much much longer!

His other song I hope can survive much much longer! This is kind of how I feel, although I think it's due mostly in part to overplay and as I heard it on the radio so much back in the day. On the other hand, "My Heart Has a History" was one of those songs that I loved from the very first time I heard it and no matter how many times since, I still enjoy it to this day!

93. “That Ol' Wind” - Garth Brooks Released: September 1996 Billboard Peak: #4 / Billboard Year-End: Did Not Chart Total: 1339 Average: 78.76 Std Dev: 37.39 (2ND HIGHEST!) Well, I tried :'( "That Ol' Wind" remains my favorite Garth song and one of my 10 favorite songs of all time. I just love the unique structure and the way the song builds and the great instrumental melody. Garth's voice hasn't been good on his recent releases, but I just don't understand complaints about his voice from the 90's. Also quite surprised to see so many prefer Paul Brandt's "My Heart Has a History" over "I Do". "I Do" was massively overplayed back in the day, but enough time has passed that I've embraced how good the song is again. Great wedding song, and one I thought would stick around a lot longer. I hadn't listened to "My Heart Has a History" in years before revisiting it for this, but it just kind of blended in with the songs I was less passionate about.

"There's a Girl in Texas" was released in April 1996 as Trace Adkin's lead-off single from his debut album Dreamin' Out Loud and was a Top 20 hit for him later that summer. It picked up four top half rankings in the top half including a lone top 50 from gardyfan. Most of the rankings, however came at or near the top 80 with it only three bottom 30 rankings. Included in that though is a last place from toomuchboy.

"Holdin' Onto Something" was released in March 1996 as the fourth single from Jeff Carson's self-titled debut album and was a Top 10 hit that summer. Jeff unfortunately recently passed away in March from a heart attack. This picked up two rankings inside the top 50 including a near top 40 from nathanalbright which in turn was the tie-breaker. While this didn't pick up any bottom 10 rankings, it did gather a few bottom 20s and 30s. The majority of the group, however, ranked this within their top 60 or 90.

While I do like Jeff's "Holdin' Onto Something", I'm partial to John Michael Montgomery's version as he recorded it for his 1995 self-titled album.

"It's What I Do" was released in January 1996 as the first single and title track from Billy Dean's fifth studio album and was a Top 5 hit for him that spring. It also unfortunately takes with it a top 5 ranking from Cody Wants Out... as well as a top 15 from CoJoFan. That would be its two highest rankings as the rest of the group placing in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. It only picked up a handful of rankings down in the bottom 30 which included a pair of bottom 10s from kw9461 and LBTrocks.

"On a Good Night" was released in May 1996 as the lead-off single and title from Wade Hayes' second album. The song reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart becoming his second highest-peaking single. Its run here peaked very early as it managed to make a brief appearance inside the top 40 as both myself and gardyfan ranked this in our top 50. With each additional list that came in, however, it would find itself moving further and further back before finding itself down inside the bottom 20 in the middle part of the rankdown. It managed to pick up additional support in the last half with both Cody Wants Out... and LBTrocks placing it in their top 20 and bigd79 in their top 25. It did also pick up a handful of bottom 30s including a lone bottom 5 from bboat11.

"Vidalia" was released in July 1996 as the second single from Sammy Kershaw's album Politics, Religion and Her and was a Top 10 that summer. This was initially a top 15 contender here as it picked up three of its highest rankings early on into is run including a near top 50 from myself, a top 20 from nathanalbright, and a near top 10 from gardyfan. It settled back a spot here and there with each subsequent list with a handful of those rankings being down in the bottom 30 of which both ccarter1023 and bigd79 placed in their bottom 5. The only additional support it received was in the form of a lone top 10 from 🌺CountryLineDancer. This is the first of two songs featured in the rankdown by Sammy Kershaw with the albums lead single "Meant to Be" still remaining.

I've always enjoyed Sammy Kershaw's output from the 90s with his album Politics, Religion and Her being a particular favorite of mine. Not entirely surprised though by some of the lower rankings "Vidalia" received as he isn't an artist who has much of a fanbase here on Pulse. That said, I'm glad to see that this received at least some support because it was such an earworm to hear on the radio that summer.

"Vidalia" really is quite the earworm. I wish I could've found room to move it up higher, because it really is quite catchy (even if the onion reference goes straight over your head, as it did mine when i was younger).

WHAT DID Y'ALL JUST DO TO "IT'S WHAT I DO" AND "ON A GOOD NIGHT"?!? Okay, I'll admit that "It's What I Do" took time to grow on me at first, but similar to Suzy Bogguss and "Aces", I now find it to be an underrated gem. Ooh, and don't get me started on how dirty y'all did with "On a Good Night". What an anthem! Also, "Holdin' Onto Something" is a jam! Shame it didn't get more respect here. "Vidalia" is more take-it-or-leave-it to me, but "There's a Girl in Texas" was a pretty cool discovery albeit a bit repetitive.

Not a bad set to see go out. My top 50 is the one's that'll truly hurt if they're out before then.
"There's A Girl In Texas" is a good introduction to Trace and still holds up pretty good today. As @cjasby75 says though it's a bit repetitive, and thus gets held back by that.
"Holdin' On To Something" is my highest loss this set. I've always had a soft spot for Jeff Carson even if he only had one truly outstanding song I just really liked his vocals. I always thought he'd have been bigger if he was on a different label.
"It's What I Do" is soo much better than Billy's other single in this rankdown! A solid if not so memorable 90's single, he has better but this is nice to hear.
"On A Good Night" I wish I liked more. I can say the same for most of Wade Hayes' major label material. It's all fine but he rarely truly clicked with me till after he left the majors.
Sammy Kershaw I love, "Vidalia" is very catchy my only issue with it is it always sounded a few years out of date. But that's something I always felt for his entire discography. If he had started a decade earlier he'd have been a much bigger commercial force I think.
I feel like my first top 30 loss is coming soon, I'm hoping not but I have a few that may not get wide enough support to make it that high.

“Vidalia” was a great discovery for me. I usually don't really dig Sammy Kershaw, (talking mostly about his recent outputs tho), but “Vidalia” was really nice. His vocal was not the most pleasant thing even in this song, but I quite enjoy the melody and production.
