"Treat Her Right" was released in March 1996 as the third single from Sawyer Brown's album This Thing Called Wantin' and Havin' It All and reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. This is our second Top 5 hit song to leave and is also Sawyer Brown's second and final song to bow out making them the first artist/group with multiple songs to exit. This started off down inside the bottom 5 thanks to yours truly who was also joined down in there by ccarter1023. While it did manage to briefly escape the bottom 20, it mostly rode out its time down inside the bottom 10. Only four participants placed this inside their top half with CoJoFan being the lone participant to rank this in their top 40. This was pleasant to revisit, but they certainly have much better songs in their discography that have held up better over time. Unfortunately, this just doesn't happen to be one of those.

Exiting next is a song that briefly held the position in last place early on in its run. It mostly rode out its time down inside the bottom 5 and was only able to escape such fate thanks to a second near top 20 ranking which bumped it up a few spots.

Originally recorded by the Oak Ridge Boys in 1991, "Change My Mind" was released in July 1996 as the first single from John Berry's album Faces and was a Top 10 hit for him that summer. This actually started off at its highest ranking position thanks to myself as it would spend the majority of its run down inside the bottom 5. Only six participants ranked this outside of their bottom 30 with the highest being a pair of near top 20s from both 🌺CountryLineDancer and CoJoFan. While I happen to be a fan of John Berry's material overall, this song has just never grabbed me the way in which some of his other songs do. The follow-up single, "She's Taken a Shine", would be the albums signature hit which is one I still like to revisit from time to time.

Leaving next is a song that everyone correctly predicted would indeed be a bottom 10 contender. Despite that, it didn't even become a bottom 30 contender until midway through its run as more lists and points began adding up pushing this one down further and further. Two participants shed a bottom 5 including someone's last place with only one participant losing a top 25.

"Mama Don't Get Dressed Up For Nothing" was released in September 1996 as the third single from Brooks & Dunn's album Borderline and was the first single the duo released that missed the Top 10, breaking a streak of 17 straight top 10 entries. This was the fourth single to feature Kix Brooks on lead vocals instead of Ronnie Dunn. This was correctly predicted by everyone to leave in the bottom 10, so it should come as no surprise to see it leave next. That said, it remained mostly outside of the bottom 30 for the early part of its run only to settle back further when additional lists began coming. The points began piling up from there which pushed this back down into the bottom 10. This is the second top 30 loss for nathanalbright while only two others lose a top half. Both Cody Wants Out... and bboat11 lose a bottom 5 with the latter shedding their last place. I don't mind this song the way in which others do who also happen to likely be the most vocal about their disdain for it lol. I never go out of my way to listen to the song, but whenever I do happen to revisit the album I certainly find myself jamming out to this a bit.

"Cowboy Love" was released in November 1995 as the fourth single from John Michael Montgomery's self-titled album. It peaked at number 4 on the country charts and becomes our third Top 5 hit song to exit. Despite not starting out as such, once this found itself down inside the bottom 10 it would remain there for the remainder of the rankdown. It also briefly found itself down inside the bottom 5 at about the midway point. Helping it out some were four rankings inside the top half including a trio of top 50s from LBTrocks, Cody Wants Out..., and kw9461. The majority of the group, however, ranked this somewhere down within their bottom 30 which included a trio of bottom 5s with castleoblivion26 losing his last place. Something about this song just hasn't held up well over time as I can't remember disliking it as much as I found in revisiting it for the rankdown. I can't help but wonder, though, if ClevelandRox had participated that John Michael Montgomery would've received just enough support to escape from having two songs bow out in the bottom 10.

Well, thus far Garth Brooks is nowhere to be seen and we only have one more song to reveal in the bottom 10. Is one of his songs about to exit next (and if so, which one?), or will he manage to remain unscathed yet again?!

"Love Remains" was released in June 1996 as the fourth single from Collin Raye's album I Think About You and reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart later that fall. While this might've started out down in the bottom 10 thanks to yours truly, it mostly hovered outside of that as it was pretty evenly split between those that ranked this in and out of their bottom 30. Two participants lose a top half including a top 40 from someguy. This is also the first song to exit which did not receive any bottom 5s.

112. “Cowboy Love” - John Michael Montgomery Oof, that hurt. I may have been overzealous there, but no year-end rankdown is complete with a speed bump here or there, amirite? Not too surprised with everything else that's out, but I do hope that "Long As I Live" and "It's What I Do" escape the bottom 20 at least with JMM and Billy Dean making an appearance already. More often than not, I like Sawyer Brown's material, but I never cared for "Treat Her Right" as a kid and I find "'Round Here" quite tacky; their offerings in other years were much better (including their Greatest Hits singles). "Bury the Shovel" sounded weak amidst this collection and "Ain't Got Nothing On Us" stuck out like a sore thumb imo. "That Girl's Been Spyin' on Me" sounded awkward to me at first, but it is glacially becoming a grower. I probably could've been kinder to "It Works", but, like other songs, it got lost in the shuffle for me. Hopefully, "The Maker Said Take Her" can make the top 80; personally, I'd like to see it closer to the halfway mark, but this rankdown was STACKED. I'm sure more pain will be coming as the reveals march on. There were a couple of songs that may have been rediscoveries for me; "Change My Mind" was one of them. To show how imperfect I am, I turned seven in '96, so my recollections aren't the best. Never liked "Mama Don't Get Dressed Up for Nothing", never will. What a sizzlin' hot mess. Collin Raye is an amazing singer, but "Love Remains" is kind of a clunker in his discography. Both of his remaining songs should be able to make the top half safely. You know, it also wouldn't hurt to see a Garth song or two out next (even though, there's only one I'd like to see leave first).

cannot really complain as there is so little on this list I'm not a fan of. I have 3 songs left in my bottom 10 and at least one of them I expect to last a while cause somehow people find that dreck enjoyable (and it is by a female artist and we all know how they can do no wrong lol)
Seriously though 7 out of my bottom 10 are in the bottom 10 so I really cannot complain at all. Now for the 3 that are in the Bottom 10 that I ranked much higher...
"Mama Don't Get Dressed Up For Nothing" - this was an absolute favorite when I was younger and among the earliest country songs I've ever loved so while it doesn't hold up as well because of Kix' vocals I still love the song. Out of the 3 this is the one I'm the least upset to see gone.
"Treat Her Right" deserved better though. I've always really liked this one and feel that it is among Sawyer Brown's best.
and lastly the one that I'm most sad to see be in the bottom 10 is "That Girl's Been Spyin' On Me" as I think that song is so much fun and I really enjoy listening to it. I've always liked Billy Dean and know he isn't a favorite around here but this is one of my favorites from him. Shouldn't be Bottom 10.
With that said I'm hoping to see Garth Brooks escape the Bottom 20 altogether, but am happy he at least escaped the bottom 10 as I love all the songs included from him here and none deserve to be this low. I know he isn't popular so I expect he will be this low but happy he isn't bottom 10!

Really surprised that "The Change" escaped the bottom 10, since even among Garth fans its not a huge fan favorite.
Overall not too many surprises though, save for yall being the fun police and not liking "Cowboy Love". That melody still totally slays. I saw JMM last fall and it was still a big fan favorite in concert.
I like Sawyer Brown, but this was a bad year for them. "Treat Her Right" is fine, probably deserved slightly better than bottom 10, but still not one of their best. "Round Here" isn't a bad song, just bland and forgettable, which in a monster year like this makes you a last place contender.
Clay Walker didn't have many duds, but "Bury The Shovel" was just a poor choice to be a single. Clay's one of my favorite artists, but I still couldn't keep it out of my bottom 5.
"Love Remains" is probably an easy #120 in the hands of any other vocalist. Collin Raye sings the hell out it, enough so to barely escape my bottom 10. His other offerings this year are fantastic though.

- The first of four ties will be revealed
- One artist will lose not one but two songs
- The first song by a female artist will exit
- Five participants will see their last place song exit

"The Change" was released in March 1996 as the fourth single from Garth Brook's album Fresh Horses and was a Top 20 hit on the country charts later that spring. Both the song and video pays respect to the families of victims of the Oklahoma City bombing that occurred the year prior in April 1995. Despite the loud chorus of everyone predicting that this would be a bottom 10 contender, it in fact never was and only slipped back to its lowest position in the final moments when the last of four bottom five rankings came in. It received its two highest rankings early on in the form of top 40s from both nathanalbright and ccarter1023. That was enough to briefly push this up into the top half. That was short lived, however, as it began to drift further and further back as more lists and points piled on. From there it pretty much just hovered in and around the bottom 20 for the remainder of its time. .indulgecountry loses his bottom 2 while a trio of others shed a bottom 5.

I'm admittedly a bit shocked to see "The Change" be the biggest prediction for Garth's lowest song, and then for it to ultimately come true. To me "It's Midnight Cinderella" has basically everything that Garth haters hate about Garth, and sounds like a Garth song through-and-through, while I see "The Change" as a song that could have been pretty good in most people's hands but happened to lose favor for having ended up in Garth's hands.
I do happen to like it though. It has a really unique vibe to it that helped it to stand out in a positive way for me. I think that was just Garth's bravado, however, so I can totally see why that might rub people the wrong way if they aren't fans of that.

Leaving next is a song by an artist who made their debut the same year. This Top 10 hit was an early top 50 contender here, but quickly shot to the back and rode out the remainder of its time in the bottom 20.

"Goodnight Sweetheart" was released by David Kersh from his debut album, Goodnight Sweetheart, as its second single in July 1996 and reached number 6 on the country charts later that summer. The song had previously been recorded by Joe Diffie for his 1992 album Regular Joe. Despite this starting off strong and briefly making a showing in the top 50, it quickly settled back and by the middle of the takedown it settled into the bottom 20 for the remainder of its run. Both LBTrocks and gardyfan lose a top 50 while myself and 🌺CountryLineDancer lose a top half. The majority of the group did in fact rank this somewhere within their bottom 30 with Kanenrá:ke being the lone participant to put this in their bottom 5.
