Chiming in with Janet Jackson talk, I was born in 1987 and when I was kid I would say her biggest hits at least in my country are Together Again and All For You

I feel if any young people know a Janet song, it's actually for Any Time Any Place which was sampled in Poetic Justice. For me the first Janet songs I ever heard was Feedback with Ciara and Scream. I'm not American so I didn't hear about the Superbowl Incident until years after the fact.
She's been quiet and humble over the past few years: her comeback in 2015 actually did numbers and had a minor hit with No Sleep, and she was finally inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame a couple of years ago so it's not like her legacy as a black icon hasn't been re-evaluated.
That said, yeah I would be nice if say That's the Way Love Goes or Again or Black Cat or any of the hits from Rhythm Nation or Control were rediscovered properly by Gen Z or Zoomers.

World peace will be achieved when young people rediscover The Velvet Rope The younger RnB crowd would eat âEmptyâ up. âEmptyâ sounds so much like Blood Orange, Janet really is the blueprint

I was born before 2000 and never a single Janet Jackson song, except MAYBE Scream (because of Michael Jackson). Definitely never heard her songs on the radio. I'm always astounded when I see her Hot 100 achievements. It was like four years ago when I realized MJ's sister had a very successful music career lol Janet was INCREDIBLY massive, constantly on the radio and MTV (when they played videos). And she sold tons of albums. She was a cultural icon and her music was everywhere. There are a lot of factors that contributed to her being unknown by younger generations but it doesn't diminish how incredibly huge and important she was for nearly 20 years. It would be like somebody 20 years from now saying "I never heard a Beyonce song, I thought she was just Jay-Z's wife". I'm not denying she was successful. I'm just giving my own experience on Janet Jackson's music. For me it's not a surprise to see her poor streaming numbers, because like I said I have never heard her music and obviously I'm not alone when looking at the numbers. The Beyonce/Jay-Z comparison doesn't work because Beyonce, like MJ, was a bigger star. I think it should be the other way around: "I never heard a Jay-Z song, I thought he was just Beyonce's husband". But even the other way around that comparison makes no sense, because when you look at streaming numbers, Jay-Z has 29M monthly listeners compared to Janet's 5M, and so many songs with more streams than the most streamed Janet Jackson song. You'll never know if Beyonce/Jay-Z music will be relevant in 20 years. But considering both acts rose to fame in the 90s, haven't had hits in years and still have 30M monthly listeners on Spotify, it's unlikely they will be as irrelevant to future generations as Janet Jackson.

I genuinely don't think anyone my age outside of the US/Canada/UK really cares about Janet Jackson

Janet Jacksonâs top three biggest songs, commercially speaking as well as internationally, are âTogether Againâ, âThatâs The Way Love Goesâ and âAll For Youâ. If there are any songs of hers of which would be known to the current generation, it would be these three.
Again, there are three main reasons as to why she is seen and viewed so poorly in a post-2000âs, late millenial/Gen-Z, climate:
1) Her lack of playlisting exposure on Spotify. 2) The lack of strategising on her YouTube channel. 3) The complete incompetence beset by her team when it comes to overall promotion and exposure of her work.
She doesnât carry the ubiquity that Whitney Houston does (even in death) and she isnât as culturally relevant as Mariah Carey, both of whom do infinitely better in streaming as they have several huge classics that have carried over throughout the years especially with Houston. Madonnaâs streaming numbers have also grown much more the last several years; they were once rather average, with a lot of her songs going viral recently and the fact that sheâs taking advantage of that by remixing them with modern acts ie. âFrozenâ.
Jackson only has two songs (yes, two) on Spotify with 100M streams. That is absolutely awful for someone of her stature.
I love her but she and her label need to do a lot more if theyâre to boost her profile on a wider level again. Yes, she may be a Pop legend, but that doesnât mean anything if her numbers remain at a standstill and she isnât being listened too by the new generation. The documentary was a great start, and it helped for a time, but whatâs next? âUnbreakableâ was a fantastic album which couldâve been bigger with the accompanying tour but she cancelled that too, something of which sheâs become notorious for and itâs not helping her case.

Janet's team has completely messed up with her streaming but also have to say that not so many pop hits from 1988 to 1993 have big streaming numbers these days. It's weird.

if Wasted On You re-enters the top 10, that has to be one of the longest gaps between first and second week in the top 10 (non holiday ofc) ever, right?

^ Keith Urban 'Wild Hearts' still hasn't hit H100, but it's Top 30 airplay. I'm guessing it's because sales/streams are negligible and airplay is continues to diminish. I wonder what's the highest airplay position to miss H100 completely. Anyone? WH is getting power spins this week combined with the flushing out of all those stagnant because of the bombs, it just might chart, making this observation moot. Now that it is predicted to make the chart, Wild Hearts may be breaking a different record: the song to chart with the lowest streaming and sales numbers.

Kate Bush Reacts to Success of âRunning Up That Hillâ in âStranger Thingsâ: âItâs All Really Exciting!â 'Thanks very much to everyone who has supported the song,' the British legend said.
By Mitchell Peters
In a rare public statement, the British art rock legend shared her excitement about renewed interest in âRunning Up That Hillâ after it was featured in the recently premiered season of the 1980s-set Netflix sci-fi series. âYou mightâve heard that the first part of the fantastic, gripping new series of âStranger Thingsâ has recently been released on Netflix,â Bush wrote in a statement on her website. âIt features the song, âRunning Up That Hillâ which is being given a whole new lease of life by the young fans who love the show â I love it too!â The singer-songwriter added, âBecause of this, âRunning Up That Hillâ is charting around the world and has entered the UK chart at No. 8. Itâs all really exciting! Thanks very much to everyone who has supported the song. I wait with bated breath for the rest of the series in July.â âRunning Up That Hill,â the lead single to Bushâs 1985 album, Hounds of Love, soundtracks the story of Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), still reeling from a family death, in the fourth season of Stranger Things, which premiered on May 27. Max plays the track on her Walkman in the first episode of the season, and the song serves as a recurring theme for the character leading up to a pivotal sequence in the fourth episode. Last week, Billboard reported that âRunning Up That Hillâ had experienced a particularly overwhelming spike in streams on Spotify, with the song rising by 9,900% in U.S. plays from Thursday to Monday (May 30). Indeed, despite pulling in daily streams in the 20,000s as recently as May 26, âRunning Up That Hillâ has since netted millions of U.S. streams on a daily basis, according to Luminate â while also selling thousands of copies daily. It should all add up to the song debuting on a number of Billboard sales and streams charts (dated June 11) and potentially re-entering the all-genre, multi-metric Billboard Hot 100, as well. Upon its 1985 release, âRunning Up That Hillâ became the highest-charting Hot 100 single of Bushâs career, reaching No. 30 on the tally. The song has been covered numerous times since its release, including a Placebo version in 2003 that was synched on The O.C., and a Meg Myers version in 2019 that topped Billboardâs Alternative Airplay chart. Per Spotify, Bushâs full catalog has seen a 1,600% uptick in global streams since the Stranger Things premiere.

I think that Control and Rhythm Nation are both fantastic albums and that Janet is definitely ripe for rediscovery. I'm not sure why her team is so incompetent at promoting her legacy but she has a lot of great material that really set the template for a lot of the 90's and 2000's and beyond R&B that I and many others appreciate so much.

Replicating RUTH's performance and resurgence isn't a given -not by a longshot. During the first 3 seasons several other 'findable' songs - shoutout to ONJ's 'Twist of Fate' - but didn't have anywhere near this kind of impact.
Chalk RUTH fortunes to a rare situation where a song so perfectly aligned with the story that it resonated with an unusually high number of viewers who proactively sought it out.
It's better when these left-field hits are the anomaly rather than the norm.

Harry Styles Holds Atop Billboard Hot 100 With âAs It Was,â Kate Bushâs âRunning Up That Hillâ Hits Top 10 Bush's 1985 classic re-enters at No. 8, soaring past its prior No. 30 peak, thanks to its "Stranger Things"-sparked revival.
By Gary Trust
06/6/2022Harry Stylesâ âAs It Wasâ scores a fifth week atop the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. It premiered at No. 1 eight weeks earlier. Concurrently, Kate Bushâs 1985 classic âRunning Up That Hill (A Deal With God)â re-enters the Hot 100 at No. 8, far surpassing its prior No. 30 peak â and becoming Bushâs first top 10 on the chart â sparked by its synch in the new fourth season of Netflixâs Stranger Things. The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data. All charts (dated June 11, 2022) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (June 7). For all chart news, you can follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. 06/06/2022 âAs It Was,â released on Erskine/Columbia Records, tallied 72.4 million radio airplay audience impressions (down 2%), 27.6 million streams (down 22%) and 6,500 downloads sold in the May 27-June 2 tracking week. The track spends a fourth week at No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart; dips to No. 2 after two weeks atop Streaming Songs; and rises 10-6 on Digital Song Sales, following a week at the top spot. Meanwhile, Stylesâ âLate Night Talkingâ slides 4-9 in its second week on the Hot 100. The song, like âAs It Wasâ from his LP Harryâs House, which crowns the Billboard 200 albums chart for a second week, is scaling the Pop Airplay chart (35-25, with Greatest Gainer honors, up 127% in plays), while âAs It Wasâ leads the list for a fourth week. Jack Harlowâs âFirst Classâ holds at No. 2 on the Hot 100, after three nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1. It concurrently claims a seventh week atop both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, which use the same multi-metric methodology as the Hot 100. Futureâs âWait for U,â featuring Drake and Tems, is likewise steady at No. 3 on the Hot 100, after a week at No. 1. It rules Streaming Songs for a third frame (31.5 million, down 2%). Lizzoâs âAbout Damn Timeâ hits a new No. 4 Hot 100 high, up from No. 5, and reaches the Radio Songs top 10 (14-10; 40.9 million, up 16%, good for top Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100). Lizzo notches her third Radio Songs top 10, following her 2019 No. 1s âTruth Hurtsâ (for six weeks beginning that September) and âGood as Hellâ (four, November). âTimeâ tops the multi-metric Hot R&B Songs chart for a third week. Glass Animalsâ âHeat Wavesâ rises 6-5 on the Hot 100, after five weeks at No. 1, as it leads the multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Alternative Songs charts for a 37th week each, and Lattoâs âBig Energyâ pushes 7-6 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 3. Bad Bunny and Chencho Corleoneâs âMe Porto Bonitoâ ascends 10-7 for a new Hot 100 best, as it rules the multi-metric Hot Latin Songs chart for a third week. Kate Bushâs 1985 hit âRunning Up That Hill (A Deal With God)â re-enters the Hot 100 at No. 8, surging past its prior No. 30 high, fueled by its synch in Netflixâs Stranger Things. The fourth season of the â80s-set show, which premiered May 27, incorporates the song in multiple episodes, serving as a recurring theme for the character of Max Mayfield, played by Sadie Sink. (Bush is a fan of the series, and, in a rare move for her music, approved the songâs usage in it after reviewing script pages and footage outlining how it would be incorporated.) âHillâ roars onto Digital Song Sales at No. 1, where itâs Bushâs first leader, with 18,300 sold, up from a nominal sum, and onto Streaming Songs at No. 6, with 17.5 million streams, also vaulting from a negligible total. It additionally drew 392,000 in radio airplay audience among Radio Songs reporters, again up from a minimal count. (Dating to the inception of Luminate data tracking in 1991, the song has totaled 62.5 million in radio reach, 52.4 million official streams and 151,000 in digital sales in the U.S.) The English singer-songwriter, who first appeared on Billboardâs charts in 1979, logs her first Hot 100 top 10, after âHillâ hit No. 30, her prior highpoint on the chart, on the Nov. 30, 1985, survey. (That week, Phil Collins and Marilyn Martinâs âSeparate Livesâ rose to No. 1, dethroning Starshipâs âWe Built This Cityâ; Eddie Murphyâs âParty All the Timeâ hit the top 10; Wham!âs âIâm Your Manâ scored the listâs highest debut, at No. 55; and Madonnaâs âDress You Upâ rounded out the chart at No. 100.) âHillâ was originally released on Bushâs 1985 album Hounds of Love and now also appears on Stranger Things: Soundtrack From the Netflix Series, Season 4; released May 27, the latter enters Billboardâs Soundtracks chart at No. 18. The song, which Bush solely wrote and produced, completes the longest journey from a titleâs Hot 100 debut to its first week in the top 10 â 36 years, nine months and a week â since Chuck Berryâs âRun Rudolph Runâ jingled to the tier in the 2020 holiday season after a record wait of 62 years and two weeks. Among non-holiday catalog songs this decade, the resurgence of âHillâ is similar to that of Fleetwood Macâs 1977 No. 1 âDreams,â which returned to the Hot 100, reaching No. 12, in October 2020 as it went viral on TikTok. (Also notably, âHillâ received relatively recent renewed attention thanks to Meg Myers, whose faithful cover led the Alternative Airplay chart for two weeks in February 2020.) Capping the Hot 100âs top 10, The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieberâs âStayâ returns to the region (12-10). It adds a 44th week in the top 10, second only to The Weekndâs âBlinding Lightsâ (57 weeks, 2020-21) for the most in the chartâs history; âStayâ spent its first 43 weeks on the tally in the top 10, a record for the most time spent in the bracket consecutively from a songâs debut. Interesting how Me Porto Bonito is holding up really well despite it not being released as a single.
