i mean, it was released by someone in their 20s, so it's not exactly an embrace of older women recording music.

We don’t think of her as being in her 20s now tho. …those of us who know (of) her anyway.

Who was the previous oldest female artist to hit 10 Hot 100 with a solo single? Tina Turner was 53 when "I Don't Wanna Fight" reached #9 in 1993.

Since you don't track losses 38(-4) Tate McRae - she's all i wanna be (-1.32) Ouch, and just after her album dropped last week. RCA remains as trash as ever at promoting most singles. And I seriously doubt she’s going to have a true follow-up single from that album. I wanna say that we replaced Alessia Cara with Tate (although the former is miles better), but if the label keeps giving her trash promotion then she will never be as successful as Alessia’s run but i hope it happens though.

Madonna was also 53 with “give me all your luvin” but that had featured guests on it so I’m not sure if that counts by the definition of “solo” (her last fully solo top ten was Hung Up when she was 47).

Running Up that Hill is a song recorded by a 26 year old - unless there is a new version that is charting and not the 1985 version - not sure any age records will be formally recognized in that context - outside of threads like this one
In that same context - the Brenda Lee song that charts every year is recorded by a 13 year old -- so maybe that might be youngest female? Not sure

Well, Stranger Things 5 will be set in 1987.
I want them to use another Donna Summer song for that season. Hopefully it will be her last top twenty Hot 100 hit, “Dinner With Gershwin”, which also peaked in the top ten of the R&B charts. The late, great Empress of Pop needs a generational revival.
If not, then Janet Jackson’s “The Pleasure Principle” or Diana Ross’ “Workin’ Over Time”.

I really hope they use some Janet in the next part of Stranger Things. I was just talking to my friends about this, with how legendary of an artist Janet is her Spotify numbers are dishearteningly low. She only has two songs with over 100 million streams and only has 5 million monthly listeners, obviously that's still a lot of streams but for someone with nearly 30 top 10 hits and 10 #1s, those numbers feel SUPER low to me. I wish I could go back in time and tell her to not do the Super Bowl

"Dinner With Gershwin" got to #48 in 1987. But Donna is definitely worthy of a revival - possibly the most underrated major star of the Hot 100 era.

Imagine if it were Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”? That song would definitely re-peak at #1 almost everywhere given it already amasses big daily streams - 598K yesterday on Spotify. 💀

Late to the party here, but just want to point out that currently RUTH by Kate Bush is at #7626 all-time on the Hot 100, which is pretty amazing for a song that peaked at #30.

Whether it's a new re-recorded song or just a recharting old song, Billboard sometime like to point out these kinds of biggest gap between chart hits/longest wait for first top 10/age-related record breaking chart achievements. So, hopefully Billboard gonna write some cool stats when Kate Bush re-enters inside top 10 Hot 100. This underrated un-mainstream musician deserves it!

I was born before 2000 and never a single Janet Jackson song, except MAYBE Scream (because of Michael Jackson). Definitely never heard her songs on the radio. I'm always astounded when I see her Hot 100 achievements. It was like four years ago when I realized MJ's sister had a very successful music career lol

It's not like being on st automatically guarantees a big revival. I assume there's been music on the show outside of that 1 episode.

It was like four years ago when I realized MJ's sister had a very successful music career lol Janet was INCREDIBLY massive, constantly on the radio and MTV (when they played videos). And she sold tons of albums. She was a cultural icon and her music was everywhere. There are a lot of factors that contributed to her being unknown by younger generations but it doesn't diminish how incredibly huge and important she was for nearly 20 years. It would be like somebody 20 years from now saying "I never heard a Beyonce song, I thought she was just Jay-Z's wife".

Yeah I think folks are getting way ahead of themselves if they think there’s now some guaranteed formula for reviving an old hit.
Tbh if this were to occur again I doubt it would be someone like Janet who has such a vast discography of major hits, without any “one” song standing out as a particular cult classic like RUTH does for Kate. (By which I mean, Janet has LOTS of classics and they nearly all found huge success in their day.)
I think the likeliest songs to get this kind of reception are songs that have been repeatedly covered (an imperfect but decent measure of “classic-ness”) and were by artists who never had major chart success but are highly regarded.
