Kate Bushβs βRunning Up That Hillβ Soars in Streams Thanks to βStranger Thingsβ: Inside the Preliminary Spotify Gains "It's remarkable to see how the reaction to Kate's song has engaged new and old fans alike," Netflix's Alexandra Patsavas says of the immediate listener reaction.

βRunning Up That Hill (A Deal With God),β Kate Bushβs classic 1985 single, has received an explosion of new interest thanks to its use in the recently premiered fourth season of Stranger Things β and while next weekβs Billboard charts will reflect its overall surge, new data from Spotify demonstrates the Netflix seriesβ impact on its streaming totals thus far.
According to data collected by Spotify on Monday (May 30), βRunning Up That Hillβ posted an 8,700% increase in global streams compared to its total on Thursday (May 26), the day prior to the Stranger Things season four premiere on Netflix. Meanwhile, the songβs U.S. streams increased by 9,900% over the same time period. βRunning Up That Hillβ currently sits at No. 2 on Spotifyβs top 50 U.S. chart and No. 4 on its top 200 global chart.
βItβs incredible to watch iconic songs get rediscovered and have global moments with new listeners,β says Jeremy Erlich, Spotifyβs global head of music, in a statement to Billboard. ββRunning Up That Hill (A Deal With God) β is one of those βperfect stormβ examples. Itβs a classic song that has been introduced to a wide fandom and has now taken on a whole new meaning.β
βRunning Up That Hill (A Deal With God),β the lead single to the British legendβs 1985 album Hounds of Love, soundtracks the story of Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), still reeling from a family death, in the fourth season of Stranger Things. Max plays the song on her Walkman in the first episode of season four, and the song serves as a recurring theme for the character leading up to a pivotal sequence in the fourth episode.
In addition to βRunning Up That Hill,β the new season of Stranger Things, set primarily in 1986, is full of indelible β80s hits, from Dead or Aliveβs βYou Spin Me Round (Like a Record)β to Musical Youthβs βPass the Dutchieβ to Falcoβs βRock Me Amadeus.β According to Spotify, the platformβs official Stranger Things playlist has scored 1,784% increase in daily global streams from Thursday to Monday, with βRunning Up That Hillβ scoring the biggest individual bump.
βMore than ever, Stranger Things is a cultural phenomenon that resonates with fans all over the world,β says Alexandra Patsavas, Netflixβs director of music/creative production for series, in a statement. βWe are thrilled to see fans connect so enthusiastically with such a key part of the [showrunners] Duffer Brothers incredible storytelling β the music. Itβs remarkable to see how the reaction to Kateβs song has engaged new and old fans alike, and has also transcended generations β 37 years later!β
Upon its 1985 release, βRunning Up That Hillβ became the highest-charting Hot 100 single of Bushβs career, reaching No. 30 on the tally. The song has been covered numerous times since its release, including a Placebo version in 2003 that was synched on The O.C., and a Meg Myers version in 2019 that topped Billboardβs Alternative Airplay chart. Per Spotify, Bushβs full catalog has seen a 1,600% uptick in global streams since the Stranger Things premiere.
βWeβve watched the song grow tremendously over the weekend, showcasing the massive cultural impact of Stranger Things and streamingβs power to share and discover music instantaneously,β says Erlich. βMost importantly, Kate Bush has deservedly increased her fanbase to a new generation of music lovers. Max / Sadie Sink and the Stranger Things crew have great taste!β

What does that even mean?? It's a reference to the Benny Mardones song "Into The Night" charting at #20 9 years after initially peaking at #11 in 1980. Mardones was in his mid 30s in 1980 and the song started "She's just 16 years old, leave her alone they say...". And the video (you really have to see it to believe it) showed him spying through her window before taking her on a flying carpet ride. I love the song but it's super creepy, especially when you see him literally singing it to a young girl. Wasn't ITN (1989) actually a re-recording? While stations may have played the original mix, I believe it was promoted as 'new' - similar to SMAA ('89). So 'Edge of Seventeen' - he's obviously still 16. Is it less creepy because it's a woman singing about a boy? I know Steve stated the song was written for other reasons, but: "He was no more than a baby then .. But the moment that I first laid eyes on him all alone on the edge of seventeen.'

Between Bad Bunny and Harry, i wonder whoβs going to outlast the other by the end of the summer as theyβre both doing their best on AM and Spotify respectively. I guess Moscow Mule isnβt going to rebound and/or past its initial peak but Me Porto Bonito or Titi Me Pregunto could definitely grow and most likely last in the top 20 at least. As for Harry, Late Night Talking is the most likely option for the next single while i think Matilda might be the streaming sleeper like Die Hard, Dua Lipa (song) and Puffin On Zootiez is for the recent album bombs for now.

You're not understanding what I'm saying at all.... Catalog music in general can take off much heavier in the streaming world than it ever did on iTunes at its peak days in 2010-2015. Old music would go viral, be used in media, get covered on Glee/American Idol/etc, and it would never just take off to top 10 on iTunes. Then in the streaming era old songs can now go top 10 on streaming platforms after having a viral/media usage moment. 10 years ago you would see a song get used in a huge TV show like this, then go to like #80 on iTunes and that was a big deal. Never something like #3 or #5 simply off usage in a single TV show or movie. Those songs were available on iTunes and the demographic consuming music was older then so you'd think old/classics songs would've been able to chart just as high on consumption back then. I think it's just because at the height of the digital age, it took MUCH more sales for a song to make top 10 or #1 (almost every song in the top 10 then had 100K+ units, with the #1 moving 200-300k+ units), so obviously it would obviously be much harder to get 200k+ consumers on board (vs. like 10k today) to purchase a song from a popular show or something that went viral, and the average digital sales consumer was actually much younger back then than today, since it was a newer technology (boomers and such were still buying CDs or relying on the radio for their music, etc.). Yeah, the post was questioning how catalog songs have bigger boosts in the streaming era on streaming though. It takes just as much people to stream a song millions of times as it does to buy 100k+ in a week, if not more. Yet we are seeing very old songs reach top 10 and higher on Spotify/Apple Music way more than it occurred on iTunes in its peak days.

Isn't the easy answer that sales are final and a one-time thing? If I already owned a copy of "Hounds of Love," hearing the song on Stranger Things wasn't going to make me re-purchase it again, and there was simply no way of tracking what was being consumed. So it is likely that we would have had more old hits resurging due to use in other media had we had a way of tracking number of plays on each iTunes user's downloaded files.
back in the sales era, the iTunes chart only reflected people who had newly discovered these resurging songs, whereas streaming gives us the bigger picture of how they're popular among all music listeners.

Harry Styles Charts All 13 Songs From βHarryβs Houseβ in Hot 100βs Top 30 "As It Was" leads by taking the No. 1 spot for a fourth week on the chart.
By Xander Zellner
05/31/2022
Harry Styles charts all 13 songs from his new album Harryβs House in the top 30 of the latest Billboard Hot 100 (dated June 4).
The set charges in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 521,500 equivalent album units in the week ending May 26, according to Luminate β the biggest weekly total for an album this year, surpassing the opening frame of Kendrick Lamarβs Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers (295,500) a week earlier. Stylesβ third solo LP logs the biggest week for an album since Adeleβs 30 debuted with 839,000 units (Dec. 4, 2021).
Leading Stylesβ haul on the Hot 100, four Harryβs House songs rank in the top 10, paced by βAs It Was,β which rebounds for a fourth week at No. 1. He ups his career total to seven top 10s (one more than One Direction β in which he broke through β achieved, in 2012-15).
Hereβs a recap of Stylesβ 13 entries on the newest Hot 100. All are debuts except for βAs It Wasβ:
Rank, Title
No. 1, βAs It Wasβ (up from No. 2; fourth week at No. 1) No. 4, βLate Night Talkingβ No. 8, βMusic for a Sushi Restaurantβ No. 9, βMatildaβ No. 13, βDaylightβ No. 14, βLittle Freakβ No. 15, βGrapejuiceβ No. 21, βSatelliteβ No. 22, βCinemaβ No. 24, βDaydreamingβ No. 25, βKeep Drivingβ No. 29, βLove of My Lifeβ No. 30, βBoyfriendsβ In the Hot 100βs 63-year history, Styles is just the second act to place at least 13 songs in the top 30 simultaneously. He joins Drake, who has achieved the feat twice, tallying 17 songs in the top 30 on the July 14, 2018, chart, concurrent with chart debut of parent set Scorpion, and a record 19 simultaneous top 30 hits on the Sept. 18, 2021, survey, as Certified Lover Boy launched atop the Billboard 200.
By adding 12, Styles swells his career solo total to 17 top 40 Hot 100 hits. (One Direction has earned 13.)

Yeah, I think the way streaming has blown up and become the predominant method of music consumption the last 5-10 years has allowed many more people en masse to listen to songs of their choice, who might only be casually interested and willing to stream them at a very low cost, but who wouldn't otherwise be willing to purchase them if we were at the height of the digital age. And the point you bring up, that for those who are very interested, that streaming tracks repeat listening is very valid as well. In addition, the way that older/catalog music has become much more trendy and popular on streaming (and digital) the past couple years cannot be stressed enough as something most likely contributing to this. (Back in the digital age, there were definitely NEW songs, such as Feist's 1234 or Yael Naim's New Soul that were able to shoot into the Hot 100 top 10 from high digital sales due to synch placements, so the trend of older music being more popular now and not as much then might be the sole answer to iHype's question).

I really hope the song can reach a new peak on the Hot 100. Given the way things are going I assume it's almost a given that it should re-enter the top 50? There's currently a new entry on Kworb's daily US youtube chart 10 NEW Unknown Artist - Unknown Title 1,184,312 I assume that it's for "Running Up That Hill". If so, it's doing 500k+ views/day in the US currently on there. #4 on Global spotify with over 5 million streams. I hope it keeps rising and maybe even gets playlist support/added to today's top hits etc. Appears to be the case. Sun-Mon update: NEW Kate Bush - Running up That Hill 1,319,780 Only songs top 10 on American spotify + apple + youtube right now: Me Porto Bonito 5 + 2 + 3 Running Up that Hill 2 + 6 + 6 Titi Me Pregunto 8 + 3 + 5

Top 10 on Hot 100 for "Running"? I don't think so 1. the effect truly started on Sunday so it "lost" two tracking days (Spotify positions 118 - 18 - 2) 2. no airplay It should re-enter I think

You Proof's first week seems to be a fair estimation of this week's performance of Running Up That Hill.
You Proof did 23.1k sales, 8,063,954 streams on Spotify, and 22.5 million streams total. With virtually no airplay either.

unlike βDreams,β this song hasnβt exactly been everpresent on stations that play older songs occasionally or regularly, so it might have a bit of a fresh feel to it. I emailed a nearby oldies station (thatβs how they take requests lol) asking to play βRunning Up That Hillβ in 2019. They responded and thank you but the song βdidnβt fit their programmingβ. I turned the radio on the next day, flipped to the alt station, and they were playing Meg Myersβ cover. They are paying for their mistake. Sheβs #4 on Apple Music now, btw. I was skeptical of her re-entering yesterday, it seems all but confirmed now. I wonder if sheβll overtake Harry on Spotify. If her gain on Spotify is proportionate to her Apple Music gain, itβll be close.

Sometimes a response would be βweβll see what we can doβ or even playing a different song by the same artist, but that response to me is odd. It makes sense but is a poor response because itβs like, what does βfitβ your programming? It just seems like such an out-of-touch and distanced way to respond to a direct request from a listener.

The top 10 cutoff next week is <140 points, so it should go top 10 even if it only averages 1.5M Spotify streams per day for the next two days (which would be a strong dip). To hit top 5, it would need to peak with 2.5-3M streams for the next two days

If Kate makes the top ten, I wonder how many (non-holiday) records she would leave in her wake? She first hit the Hot 100 in February 1979 with "The Man With The Child In His Eyes", so that would be a 43 year wait for her first top ten. It would be her first top 40 appearance since RUTH's original run in the fall of 1985, so a nearly 37 year gap between top 40 hits and nearly 37 years from release to making the top ten. And it will be 29 years since she last charted in 1993.
There have got to be some records in there somewhere (again, discounting holiday songs).

Even though the charts haven't updated yet, we can expect Pushin' P, No Love, Me or Sum and Never Wanted to be That Girl to go recurrent.

To hit top 5, it would need to peak with 2.5-3M streams for the next two days I don't think you can calculate it that way purely based on Spotify...
