Well 1 single doesn't really bring in that much money. More so, it's amazing the song hit #1 considering the label Divine was on and how the group didn't have much in general going for them. People really responded to the song (it went #1 in sales months before it peaked at Top 40), which makes it more of a shame the song is forgotten in a general sense. I mean it does make sense for sure, especially when the follow-up single and album weren't hits and promoting those two probably absorbed most the profit. That's just surprising to see a label/business go that downward so quick. In general R&B singles sold a lot during the 90s without the need of Top 40 support so that isn't surprising either. That was the same year The Boy Is Mine, Too Close, Nice & Slow, etc were dominating Hot 100 due to heavy sales. I also wonder if the song was heavily discounted. That was common with enticing people to buy a single from a new/developing artist they didn't care for normally. Which would also then make the label losing money and the song having relatively good sales make even more sense. I actually bought the cassette single for "Lately" back in '98. I don't remember if it was discounted but I'm pretty sure it wasn't 49 cents or anything like that. But even at full price one million-selling single probably wouldn't have been enough to keep an entire label afloat.

Their second single peaked at #29 on Hot 100, due almost entirely to sales (#16 on Sales & N/A on Radio) which leads me to believe they had their singles discounted since they were so relatively unknown selling so much and also their album flopped despite their singles being sales-driven. Discounting was a store-by-store basis thing ofcourse though. They could've been sold full priced at some retailers and discounted at others. This is the case for any 90s physical single so yeah we'll obviously never know for sure the full picture.

Wait For U is back to #3 and Break My Soul is at #4 now. The former would not give these songs a break on AM. Jimmy Cooks might be #1 on the hot 100 after all if its still that strong.

How does a record label go from having a Hot 100 #1 to dissolving in less than a year? And how did American Idol let someone who had a Hot 100 #1 be a contestant?? 1) No idea. I read an article about the label being in the midst of bankruptcy just as Divine was seeing mainstream success. Everything, seemingly, crashed and burned soon after. 2) Perhaps the rules were different on American Idol at the time, or the judges knew who she was but didn’t care. Here she is, auditioning in 2007. She got through to the last of three Hollywood rounds, just before the live shows, but didn’t make it. Her name is Kia Thornton - she sings on the intro for “Lately” as well as the entire first verse” m.youtube.com/watch?v=_thrfzRFIpYWow, that video proves it, but that is still VERY shocking, because I'm pretty sure that at least at one time you weren't allowed to be on the show if you previously had a record deal. And even if this rule wasn't exactly in place the season Kia auditioned, it still makes a lot of sense, because you can't have someone on these shows, which are meant to showcase the best undiscovered talent in America and launch them to fame, who previously already had a bit of fame, and a Hot 100 #1 to boot! I don't know about that whole season, but at least in that clip they didn't mention she was from Divine, so I think in her case, most people wouldn't know or probably forgot about her, so they thought they could get away with trying to conceal that, but it really is kind of fraudulent.

The voice has welcomed successful music artists like Paula Deanda , billy Gilman, and Cupid (of the Cupid shuffle lol)

The most forgettable number 1 in Hot 100 history. Life Goes On, Permission To Dance and My Universe say hi The BTS singles at least have ARMY stans who still stream it. Same goes with Travis' number ones and Taylor's recent #1s I don't think even Barbs stream TROLLZ

Yeah it's surprising because one year later Carly Smithson was on American Idol and got tons of backlash because she had a record deal and was dropped years earlier, even though in her case she never even made it to any official charts. There's even a whole section on her Wikipedia about it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carly_Smithson#ControversiesSo the fact they let someone with a previous record deal and legitimate mainstream hits make it onto the show is a headscratcher. A Hot 100 #1 is the biggest stamp of success you can receive in many's eyes. Obviously though if anybody would be an exception it would be someone in this group -- completely forgotten #1 by a one-hit wonder with absolutely no recognition to the public. It's a unique case but still, that's confusing to me.

You might be on to something. This is reminding me of the week when Wait For U pulled the upset and debuted at #1 over AIW. Keep in mind, this was at a time when AIW was a lot closer to its peak and Harry's team even sent out a digital download with alternative cover on the iTunes store on Thursday to try to prevent WFU from reaching #1. Come to think of it, I think Jimmy Cooks might have this #1 locked.

Betty (Get Money) is one of the more ridiculous songs I’d heard in a while, it’s so obnoxious that I’m rooting for it (i think, lol)

Drake 2nd week, Luke Combs album, Beyoncé, Lil Nas X, and now Taylor Swift. That’s a lot of good new music to go around, so please stream any of these. There is no reason why Bad Habits should be spending a 53rd week on the charts.

New Taylor Swift song... midnight It's giving another folklore/evermore? Although she seems to be back to promoting a single before demolishing Spotify charts with a surprise. She will probably debut ar nr.1 given how week the top is right now.

Seeing Kate Bush rapidly climb on radio brings a huge smile to my face. Now i’m even more confident that it could go to #1 when ST S4 Volume 2 comes out, and that’ll also be on a Friday so it has a full week of the massive hype to bring in as much traction as it can. It’s like they’ve made all the right moves everywhere and its really under appreciated to see a song take advantage of its hype.

She will probably debut ar nr.1 given how week the top is right now. Taylor will be going up against Break My Soul (first full week) and The Kind of Love We Make (Luke’s album release). If this goes #1, you can bet your bottom dollar that something from 1989 TV (most likely Blank Space) will top the Hot 100.

Taylor's last soundtrack single (Only the Young) debuted at #50. The previous (Beautiful Ghosts) didn't even chart.
The most apt comparison given the style of song might be Renegade (not from a soundtrack but wasn't her album either) which debuted at #73. Granted, that was posited as a feature even though she sings the whole song, but still.
I'm not expecting anywhere near a top 20 debut, let alone #1. Would love to be wrong!

Reports earlier this year stated the song was around 8 minutes long. "All Too Well" had the benefits of a shorter edit and longstanding hype to propel it to hit status, which I can't see being the case here.

I would want for the next #1 on the Hot 100 to be Joji's Glimpse of Us.

I would want for the next #1 on the Hot 100 to be Joji's Glimpse of Us. Unrealistic. The radio support has barely started and it's steaming although good, nowhere near to get it to nr.1 by itself. That posted said that they "wanted" it, not that they thought it would happen.

I'm interested to see how the release of Elvis will impact Vegas. It's already going great on streaming..
Would Jimmy Cooks be Drake's 10th #1?
