'Pearls' & 'Freak Me Now' are my faves 🥰
This is a very good body of work. The production is superb & I'm here for a lot of the "call response" feel this has. This is going to be hella fun for her to perform on tour.
I appreciate Róisín Murphy's background vocals on the title track, however I really need them to seriously collab 😂

Still excited to listen to this and loving all of the glowing reviews, marking it as her most critically acclaimed work, but I will say, now that I am going back through Jessie's discography, that I really miss her emotional ballad-type songs like Say You Love Me, Alone, Wildest Moments, Keep On Lying, and First Time. Those songs are just so beautiful and I know they don't seem to be popular on Pulse, but they hit me in the feels. Maybe next album, she gives us at least one devastating ballad.

You might enjoy Lightning. ;) It’s not a ballad per se, but a nice slower, mid-tempo sexy jam.

Her first two albums are stellar. I feel like Glasshouse went a little too far into AC territory, but it's still good ("Selfish Love" remains one of my fav songs by her). In terms of her recent ballads, I know you don't wanna do that WYP deluxe, haha. But "Pale Blue Light" is gorgeous, the build-up in the bridge with the choir is *chef's kiss* And "0208" is really pretty too.

Agreed that they add to the project. I just wish she would have actually tacked them on and put out a deluxe version of the album in the first place but gotta stay with the times blah blah blah. I have a strong AC streak in me and Jessie's voice is just so beautiful and rich that I really think she shines on those types of songs, but I love how she is feeling sexy and free and making music to reflect that too, Her catalog is just supreme. At least I have seen my favorite ballads of hers live, so I can die happy, LOL. Selfish Love HITS. I just think she can strike a balance and have the bangers, the luxe touching yourself under silk songs and also the lovestruck or forlorn ballads all under one roof. Either way, I love her.

Lightning does seem like an outlier sound-wise but I enjoy it so much that I don't care?

I agree, I prefer when they put them both out at the same time, and then maybe a complete version at the end where it includes videos and anything extra that got released along the way. I don’t love that the Platinum Edition came on two cds, that’s my grievance with it. Lightning does seem like an outlier sound-wise but I enjoy it so much that I don't care? Me too. It’s one of my favs so I’m glad it was included. Gives that sexy moment of the night (I imagine the album, when I listen to it, to be a whole show/night out at the club). :)

I think Jessie and her team underestimated themselves in the DMV region because as of 11 this morning the 2 shows she had were sold out (the venues have a capacity of less than 1300 each but still).

She’s mentioned more than once that she would lose money from touring in America so they were probably playing it safe. Idk why Interscope doesn’t do more to promote her here either; it’s wild that WYP didn’t even chart considering how critically acclaimed it was.

These Lips has to be one of my favourite last tracks on album in a long time. I’m over downtempo closers.
And Freak Me Now is the closest thing to 90s disco house that I’ve heard since the resurgence. So damn good.

Put this on while I was hopping around Venice—what a delight! It gets a bit samey so Lightning was a beautiful change of pace, but great, tight, cohesive album overall.

I still gotta listen to this (tho I did play the first two thirds of the title track) after I finish the 25th anniv edition of Butterfly.

OMG dbhmr in the Jessie Ware thread, I live. Even though WYP? and T!FG! are bondafide dance masterpieces, knowing your tastes, I think you'd gravitate more to her first three albums. Very classy, sophisticated pop/R&B. Get into Jessie. Also, dead that this kinda slaps, lol.

Finally listening to this. I put it above WYP? Echoing the praise for the production. I mean...who else?? I hope it gets Grammy love. Stranger things have happened! I totally get why critics are salivating and giving Jessie her best critical scores. Also, it's vying for the top 3 spot with Lana and Raye for 2023. #TeamNoSkip
1. Shake The Bottle (Jessie's best song. WHEWWWWWWWW-AHHH! Blondie God-tier level.) 2. Freak Me Now (this is fun! I was not prepared for the switch. Honestly, that part really elevated the song for me and from then on, I was hooked.) 3. Begin Again (Makes sense that this is the centerpiece. A masterpiece.) 4. Pearls (Honestly, I didn't know she could sing like this. WHEW.) 5. Free Yourself (it's the drums for me, WHEW. The chorus slaps too!) 6. That! Feels Good! (great start to an amazing album) 7. Hello Love (very Love Boat-esque, but extremely well-crafted. That bass is magical.) 8. Beautiful People (The fact that this gem is placed so low really speaks to the quality of this album overall.) 9. Lightning 10. Two Lips

I've been a major Jessie fan since the beginning but, unpopular opinion here, this is my least favorite album of hers to date. While I can recognize that it's a cohesive body of work and she (obviously) sounds amazing, I felt like I was listening to a Broadway soundtrack. I LOVE "Lightning" and really like "These Lips," but I don't see myself returning to the rest of this. I guess I was naively hoping that her next album cycle would expand on the sounds of "Save a Kiss" and "The Kill" from her previous era - more sleek, vaguely retro, slightly electronic midtempo bops with that gorgeous voice. I did not want showtunes.

Sitting with this now, for a few days, I literally have not one complaint about this album. Perfection!
I don’t hear “show tunes,” if I did I’d hate it. But we all hear different things. :)

I just hear 1970s in the arrangements, not show tunes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On course of debuting inside the Top 5 (possibly at #2, being her highest debut and chart peak if this indeed happens) in the UK this week.

Was hoping this could be her first #1 in the UK but a top-2 debut would still be glorious.

Enjoying the album quite a bit. My highlights are "That! Feels Good!"/"Free Yourself"/"Pearls"/"Begin Again"/"Hello Love"/"Freak Me Now" (happy it's being pushed as the next single!).
The speaking in "Shake The Bottle" reminds me of this classic:
Jessie is likey to be #4 in the chart come Friday in the UK, but will do 10k+ sales which will be her biggest opening for an album yet!

I did not want showtunes. This is a legit point. I do hear a lot of 1970s sounds and arrangements, but very specifically this album came to mind many times: It's a specific vibe. This album is probably in the middle for Jessie for me. Below Tough Love and her previous one, but above the debut and Glasshouse.

Strong album, not sure if it tops WYP. Time will tell. I do appreciate that she kept it to 10 songs, 40 minutes, that’s the perfect lenght for me.

Absolutely well deserved! If Jessie had stayed in the ballad lane, we would have gotten bored AF. Good for her going this route. Much more exciting! :) Plus she has all that previous work anyhow.
