The absence of a real Cardi or Megan hit on pop lately is likely contributing to Nicki having some bigger dominance on that platform. Pop is hungry.

Cardi hasn’t had a pop hit since like 2019 and Megan only recently had “Sweetest Pie” because of Dua Lipa. Please keep the bullshit out of this thread.

I don’t really think it has anything to do with anyone’s absence. Like the poster above me said, Latto just had a pop hit. It’s not like pop radio was thirsty for a female rapper to fill the airwaves. I never knew a slot was available or vacant. Female rappers have always come and gone on the format.

It’s not like pop radio was thirsty for a female rapper to fill the airwaves. I never knew a slot was available or vacant. Female rappers have always come and gone on the format. It's no secret that programmers like to "age out" artists over time for newer acts. If there was a hot Cardi or Megan song dropped the same day as this one, that was pop leaning, it would compete for spins. Also, Nicki hasn't had a solo pop hit (Top 20) since The Night is Still Young in 2015. It's not like she is present on this format except in features. As you said, Sweetest Pie was carried by Dua on pop. Cardi hasn't dropped anything lately towards pop. So yes, I think after the meteoric rise of Cardi and Megan, who has a succession of pop crossover hits with songs like I Like It, Finesse & Savage (and ironically, both had major hits with Maroon 5), it's not that crazy to see why pop radio might embrace a female rapper with a pop leaning song, especially when there is an absence of strong competition in that arena right now. Latto just slayed her stay on the chart, and heck, even City Girls are charting with Usher right now on pop. As Latto starts to exit the charts, I would say that programmers are certainly happy to fill that missing female rap presence. FFS, we can only have so many Harry Styles songs on the chart. I do think when there is a lack of competition, it makes sense to strike. Nicki was smart to push hard here. It actually is giving her a chance to re-establish herself in pop and thats a smart business move.

I really doubt pop radio would’ve jumped this quickly on this song had it not received so much interest out of the gate. Like you said, they pretty much did “age out” Nicki Minaj and the fact that she’s having a renaissance like this isn’t because a slot was vacant. It’s because her song is a genuine hit. Why on earth wouldn’t they play this song after how well it did in streaming? Nicki Minaj is a familiar name and the song is a safe bet. All things working in her favor for pop radio. Top 40 radio in 2022 isn’t like pop radio from the 2010s. An established familiar name like Beyoncé, Nicki or Elton can come knocking on the door with a perfectly packaged radio hit despite how long it’s been. And I think radio is embracing these ‘familiar’ names because streaming is telling them older music is becoming increasingly popular while newer music is less relevant. So putting someone on the airwaves like a Nicki or Beyonce pretty much checks all the boxes they need to please the masses. I’m glad pop radio is starting to do away with the age stigma.

I do think WAP and some of these other songs of the same nature definitely widened the scope. Anaconda started it and WAP finished it. Now you can lick it, dip it, suck it and grip it all over the airwaves with no problems.

“Anaconda” would’ve always done bad on pop without a good radio edit, the clean version sounds bonkers. The bridge was GUTTED.
“___ the skinny ___, ___ the skinny ____ in the club, I wanna see all the big fat ___ ____ in the mother____ club,”…. Jeez
“Big Energy” similarly has a swear word in like every line of the hook but she replaces them all seamlessly in the radio edit.

I will say I don’t care for this song… I prefer more originality… this feels like it was created in a hit music factory… I still give it props though for Nicki getting a hit in 2022.
As people have said it has been a weird year… The difference is streaming…new artists such as Steve Lacy, Nicky Your, and young Gravy…artists like Beyoncé and One Repulic returning To the top 10… and even a song from 1985 charting… the common denominator has been they all have done well on streaming.
I use to think streaming would hurt the music business… with any song being at your finger tips for cheap…now I think it is a god thing… for the 1st time I a long time it feels as if anything can become a hit… rather than just decided by corporate radio

Sort of wish she sampled the Rick James portions more through out the song.
Super Freak has so many hooks and is such a notable hit, it's practically begging for it.

I really like this. So many people were saying they used the sample of “Superfreak” to much I expected Rick James to be all over the track. Maybe because there’s so much sampling out there now and some artists just use a whole chorus from the original I think this is fine. She made it her own and didn’t get swallowed up by the production. I’m not a huge Nicki fan but have a decent amount of her stuff. My favorites by her are Chun-Li, Superbass, Trini Dem Girls and Good Form.
