“Cruel Summer” walked so “Anti-Hero” could run. Lover would’ve matched Midnights in success and probably also debuted at 1M pure had CS been the lead.

I don't think most would have necessarily enjoyed "Me!" either way, but yeah, the hate would probably be less severe, as the anticipation for her first lead after Rep was huge and expectations were high. The hype that normally would have aided the song, made its poor reception even more bitter. The song itself was just such a huge leap backward artistically from what people were wanting from Taylor. She went full-tilt bubblegum cheese just after really letting her hair down with Reputation, which I'm sure in her mind was a course correct. People waited years for Taylor to so much as curse, or at least feel somewhat less than cookie-cutter. Even pre-Rep Taylor was never that corny. I think with its Disney channel-esk chorus and that cringe-inducing salute to spelling in the bridge people were bound to feel it was awful, single or album cut. It is undoubtedly the biggest "what was she thinking" moment of her career IMO. I know this may sound exaggerative, but it's really not. lol I couldn't help but see her excitement and assurity of its greatness in that making of clip and stare completely befuddled. I was just hoping someone could've walked in and said "hey kids, what the ***k is this?" |

As others stated, the era could have been even that much bigger. I'd be fine with “Me!” as an album track with a better bridge. I know Paper Rings has streamed well, but like YNTCD I've just never loved it.

I know this may sound exaggerative, but it's really not. I’ve actually had a theory for a while that, with ME!, Taylor was attempting to get a piece of the Baby Shark action. That song was huge and inescapable thanks to the obsession kids had with it, and because of that it’s accumulated 15 billion streams. Taking into account that Baby Shark had just happened and that Taylor has since made it clear she was scared of being "disposed of" by the industry at the time, I think she wanted to appeal to a younger, global demographic while also masking it as a typical, repetitive, catchy pop song in the same vein as Shake It Off. Where she went wrong, IMO, was she leaned in one direction far more than the other and the song ended up appealing to nobody. I also just don’t think that an all-ages version of Baby Shark is something that could ever be done successfully... and it’s definitely not something that should EVER be attempted again. |
