Not to be confused with the 15K sold for Late Night Talking which includes physical singles in its total

if phi was still here, he'd be livid at AIW breaking the top 2 record (i just don't understand why he hates AIW so much) and LNT jumping 12-3. he'd probably write a three-paragraph/three-thread explanation on why digital sales shouldn't count on the Hot 100 and why AIW shouldn't be #1 because "it was only #1 for 1 week on the digital songs sales chart and #1 for 2 weeks on the streaming charts" for like the nth time. i would've loved it if LNT took #2 as an extra slap to his face.
Congrats Harry! the first artist to have two songs in the top 3 this year. more weeks in the top 2 to come

I am glad that Late Night Talking has reached a new peaked. Kudos to One Republic for getting another top 10. I Ain't Worried is picking up momentum. I heard it throughout the football game yesterday.

It's interesting that the Top 10 doesn't have features - ILY is a duet and Sunroof credits the producer - I don't hear second vocal or a separate verse.

I wasn't really arguing the alt hits nowadays should be bigger hits on the Hot 100, just that a Hot 100 hit isn't the only metric anymore for a song being big. Yeah, something that measures everything isn’t going to present it as such. If you took a national average of what the temperature was for the whole summer every summer for 50 years, that’s not going to acknowledge that one July in 1984 that it snowed in Texas or that August in 2007 when everyone’s house in Alaska caught on fire. Songs can be and are MASSIVE for specific demographics of people that have long-lasting impacts but they never show up on the Hot 100. Were they they hits as a result? Of course. Why not? Much the same way Texas was freezing in July 1984 even though the national average said everything was normal. There’s only so much information you can get from the Hot 100 and to rely on that only (and its yearend chart. GAG!) is kind of….ridiculous.

So, it might have to do with "AIW" potentially breaking its records (just like he got tired of "Stay" and its longevity). Having said that, I doubt anyone here considers "As It Was" to be a huge hit that merits more weeks in the top 2 than "Uptown Funk" and others. Records keep being broken in the streaming era, and to some those records feel odd because it makes it seem like these songs are the biggest ever, when it's also about how things work now.

Obviously we're in a different chart climate with a lot of longevity and it's not clear what changes in listening habits would reduce the trend towards longevity given the bias both streaming and radio have towards long-lasting hits.

I certainly understand stans wanting their favorites to hold onto records, but any chart watcher understands we are in a whole new chart climate now. Just as the 90s saw longer runs at #1 and the start of debuts at #1, we are seeing longevity records broken all of the time (not to mention records related to the number of chart entries, top 40 hits, etc). It is what it is, and you just have to keep context in mind.

The technology to measure listening habits as well as how to measure listening habits has changed over time as opposed to the 90s but listening habits may not have changed - no way to tell My post specifically said "a whole new chart climate."

Uptown Funk got to a point where the mere mention or sound of it was like nails on a chalkboard. Kinda like the Macarena. As it Was, on the other hand, is much more subtle. I don’t hate it. It’s too easy-breezy to hate. And it’s much more melodic than UF, too.

I doubt anyone who doesn't watch charts would think "As It Was" had spent the most weeks in the top 2 is my point.

Do any songs these days have the same sort of pop culture impact as things did when we had more of a monoculture? I think not. But that is what the chart data will be and it will be a trivia matter as long as the record lasts, for what it's worth.

Probably the closest things we've had to monoculture pop moment songs this year are "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and "Running Up That Hill". But that's more a reflection of the cultural impact of Encanto/Disney and Stranger Things I guess.

I think AIW isn't quite up there with Despacito or Uptown Funk in terms of being inescapable, but it's very well known. I still get IG videos on my feed featuring the song, which is a close as I am to TikTok lol.

I remember a lame Boomer meme years ago saying the masses had no taste because Led Zeppelin only had one top ten hit but Rihanna had 14 number one songs. Putting the cranky old person Rihanna shade aside, it still bugged me because it totally disregarded the fact that Led Zeppelin had lots of number one albums (more than Rihanna) and sold 300 million records. They were not some underground band that only cool people knew about. It was cherry picking stats to arrive at a disingenuous conclusion. I hate when people do that.

You Proof in the Top 10, disappointed but not surprised. Can’t wait to see how livid Mark will be that 2 songs he gave Worst Of The Week are now in the Top 10.

And 20 years from now nobody will remember any of of the current artists or their records that they broke

I wouldn't be quite that pessimistic. We still remember artists from 20 years ago or more, and sometimes they even chart. But are the records set in the past all that engrossing to many people? Not at all. Do they ultimately matter when it comes to recognizing the legacy that a song has? Not in the least. That must depend on time, and how a song ages well or poorly, how it is remembered or forgotten, and what influence it has on other people later on, to create their own art.

As a whole - music buying population I would go further and suggest few people care about that stuff now. For most it is the music rather than <insert artist> was robbed of one chart position or another or to give an example of a random record - more people will care that Drake released an album for example, rather than Drake put 9 songs in the top 10.
What is remembered or not 20 years from now will depend a lot in the same stuff that makes people remember stuff from 20 years ago
Use in tv shows, movies , cover songs etc.
