I knew RUTH would win from the beginning, so the whole RD wasn’t the anticipation of who would win, but who would come closest. Still, this was a lot of fun. Thanks wrip!

Here's my TLDR summary for my 20: I love the song. I hate why it got popular. All because of a TV Show that everyone stopped talking about months ago and it became a song most already forgot by now. Nobody was looking up other Kate Bush songs, Master of Puppets didn't become a hit even though Stranger Things used that too, yet here we are So basically you were dishonest with your rankings

You even said yourself that you actually love Running Up That Hill. The entire point of a rankdown is to rank songs from worst to best, judge them as they are regardless of any outside happenings

I know obviously me tanking it isn't a popular opinion but I was absolutely honest from first to last. That's like going after someone who hates a song but then a few months later ranks it high. Things change, feelings change.

If you were like "overplay made me like this song less" then fine but you said you liked the song and the only reason you tanked it was because it didn't get popular "the right way" And yeah, I don't like it either when people just tank songs for the artist but at least they can say they don't care for the artist in general and that wouldn't change for one song.

Guys. Please stop. Everyone has the right to rank the songs as they like. It's not like he tanked it to try to help another song win, so he played by the rules. Stop being salty when someone puts your #1 at #20. It happens. Also Ruth won anyway. Personally I wouldn't rank a song because if outside conditions, because those don't make me like a song more or less, but if that affects someone else's rankings that's perfectly fine.

Well it still won so it’s fine. It’d be a different story if that last place made it not win
Edit: Thank you for hosting this it was really fun!! A bit of a teaser for the year end RD which should be interesting lol

My thoughts:
5. One of the best ballads of 2022. So happy to see Joji finally getting a hit. (#4) 4. Unfortunate that it missed my Top 10, because it's a really good song. (#11) 3. An amazing song by Beyonce, she proved that she can still make a good hit. (#9) 2. Harry is the king of 2022. Sad that Heat Waves might be #1 instead, but this song is still awesome. (#2) 1. We live in a world where Kate Bush had a stable hit in the year 2022. I guess world peace is achievable. (#3)

You know I'm scared of seeing a "Ghost", that's why I've been doing some "Late Night Talking" with you. Thanks to your "Big Energy", I don't feel like a "Numb Little Bug" anymore. My "Auntie Asked Me" about this, and I felt that it's "About Damn Time" we're having this conversation. Nothing can "Break My Soul" if I always remember the "Glimpse of Us" in my mind. So, even though things might not be the same "As It Was", please keep "Running Up That Hill" with me. Thank you for hosting this rankdown, wrip.

Predictable outcome is predictable. I'm happy Glimpse Of Us made it to the top 5. A rare bright spot in 2022.
It should be embarrassing though that the winner of this Rankdown was a song from the 80s. That must show you how bad this year is.
A song from many years ago should not get big again in future years but Running Up That Hill did.
Running Up That Hill has been more overplayed than Stay and Heat Waves combined for me. Hear it on shows, tv, radio all the time.
Lucky big hit in 2022 because of a show. Why was this not huge in the 80s then?

Why was this not huge in the 80s then? because "one of the most critically acclaimed songs of the entire '80s that was prominently featured in a hugely popular show and therefore got free exposure to millions of people" is more likely to be a hit than "new single from random British lady who sings funny and has never had a song chart higher than #85 on the Hot 100"?

Why was this not huge in the 80s then? It was huge in several European countries, just not America lol But within America, I assume a combination of (1) not enough promotion, and (2) The song being ahead of its time. Not similar enough to other popular music to fit in, not simple enough to be consumed as a novelty.

So I have a genuine question: were you also annoyed also when Hooked On A Feeling or Mr. Blue Sky became popular because of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies? Or when Dreams was rediscovered in 2020 and became so popular, it was a top 10 hit in several other countries?

Lucky big hit in 2022 because of a show. Why was this not huge in the 80s then? To all my international posters, I am so sorry you have to read this stupidity. To the milk drinkstress, under this logic your invalidating every song that was not huge on the American charts but was huge internationally. Kate Bush is a household name, but she was not huge in the US charts which is normal since back then overseas artists had a harder time crossing over. Similar situations were with other household pop stars like Kylie Minogue or Sophie Ellis-Bextor where they were prominent internationally but saw very little stateside sucess. Murder On The Dancefloor by the latter was even reported to be the most played song in Europe of 2002, but it did no damage in the states outside of dance clubs. While yes they were not huge names in the US, all still had a following. Hound of Love, the album RUTH is from reached #30 on the Hot 100, so it clearly had some following. Furthermore, the show it went viral for is set in the exact time period of the song, what do you want them to do, score the thing with Drake and Taylor Swift songs?

On a more positive follow up note, I fear we should all stream this timeless banger.

Also what Dreams are we talking about? Cranberries, Fleetwood Mac, Beck, The Game? There's probably another I forgot.

I was on quarantine and not hearing much music in that year. I could just google and look it up yes.

That didnt answer my question. Are you fine with it becoming a hit again despite it being more than 40 years old and already being a hit? I mean it's great when some songs can come back from the dead and be popular again so people can get to know the song. I don't like Billboards though adding it on the top 100 list because it is an old song that should stay recurrent, maybe have a section of songs older than 10 years of what is the most popular right now of songs that first charted 5 or 10 years ago. I already do not like Christmas songs being on the charts each December, because Mariah Carey will have 1000 weeks on the Hot 100 with her Christmas song in like 20 years and I do not think it is right, no shade to her, I like her and a lot of her songs, but not her overrated Christmas song. I hope this answers the question and makes sense. I'm going to work now anything else I will answer tomorrow.

Billboard doesn't just let any old song that gets popular chart, especially when they've already charted for 20 weeks like RUTH originally did. They are rather inconsistent and it is a cade by case basis but more or less a song must have enough consumption as the songs in the Top 50 to escape recurrence. RUTH was one of the top consumed song for weeks and topped the streaming and sales charts several times which is why they let it chart again.
