It's doing fine in streaming, but I'm surprised it hasn't truly taken off. It's apparently killing it on TikTok, so I am a bit confused by it not being top 5 on Apple and Spotify. It's viral on TikTok, promising starts at four formats (with the possibility for more), top 10 on iTunes, Top 10 on AM, almost top 10 on Spotify. Also making moves globally. And the album is still sitting pretty in the top 10 over two months later (thanks to her streaming that's just "fine"). For a 40+ year old artist that debuted in the 90's, she's doing fantastic. Even more so when you consider the lackluster promo. Her peers would kill for streaming numbers and stats like these. I'm confused as to why we're trying to put Beyoncé in the same lane as artists who blew up in the digital/streaming eras. If Britney, Usher, Alicia, Christina, Justin, Pink, etc. were pulling numbers like these, nobody would question how good they were. We'd all be amazed, but somehow it reads as just fine for Beyoncé? I get that she's a big name and the expectations/standards are there, but we also have to approach this with some perspective. She's doing good by any measure. But she's doing especially good for an artist that came up in the era she did. I agree she's doing great for a 40 year-old woman and never said otherwise. I was specific with my wording (as always) in talking about the numbers as compared to social media (including TikTok) discussion/praise/hype. I see more about Beyonce than nearly anyone else in current music.

Other songs that have taken off on TikTok have blown up on streaming quickly, so it's not all that far reaching of me. "Cuff It" seems to be growing into a hit, so it's not a criticism, just an observation. More so the conversation around the album and singles don't seem to be fully reflected in the streaming so I've been a bit confused all era. most tiktok viral song don't crack top 10. let alone top 50. and AM? much difficult. going top 5 right away is.. extremely rare case. like.. which song did that in US. My bad as I thought it was common. If not, then I stand corrected. But didn't "Unholy" get some hype because of TikTok, which is why it was able to debut high? Didn't Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" become a hit off of TikTok? How long did that take? Didn't TikTok also help "First Class" and "About Damn Time" early on?

What are other musicians that come close to her longevity? Madonna comes to mind, but even her charting power wasn’t as prominent in the US after the millennium compared to where Bey is right now. MJ of course, 70s 80s and the 90s. Who else? As always it depends how you define things and what nuances you account for (i.e. are you talking Beyonce as a solo artist or are you including DC), but I will throw Aretha Franklin out there just to remind people of her great career. She had her first top 40 in 1961 and her first top 10 in 1967. She then had a #1 hit in 1987, a full 26 years after her debut and a full 20 years after her first top 10. She had a few more top 40s after that #1 too (including a top 30 song in 1998, nearly 40 years after her first top 40). Stevie Wonder had a #1 hit in 1963 with "Fingertips." He was still getting top 10s somewhat regularly in the 1980s, including his last top 10 ("Go Home") in 1986 (so, 25 years after his debut).

I think “Break My Soul” was just an alright lead single. “Cuff It” is obviously poised to do better, even if it doesn’t hit #1. What I find interesting is how another smash is emerging months after the album hype died down. Also keep in mind this has been a bizarre rollout with Beyonces team reacting pretty slowly to everything, so even with all that in mind I think the era is performing pretty well.

I remember it "Taking off" at several formats and was on Today's Top Hits at one point. That wedding video that used "Cuff It" did crazy good numbers on TikTok nearly a month ago (mid-September).

You're right Jengy, I remember a snippet of "First Class" going viral, then it was released not too far off of the clip circulating.

Renaissance might even be one of the best selling female albums of the year based on its trajectory. Now for Cuff it, it’s a post album single. You can’t really compare it to first class or unholy that was anticipated before they were even release. About damn time wasn’t doing as well compared to cuff it either. It was doing great on Spotify yes but the Apple Music numbers were just fine. Cuff it is taking off on all formats.

Beyonce mastered having a media presence/legacy that is bigger than her actual sales and chart dominance similar to MJ.
Yes, MJ has Thriller which is legitimately a record breaking album but when you also realize Dangerous/History/Invincible were not necessarily landmark albums in numbers and sold on par with plenty of artists far below him in status at the time it’s a similar case.
To be fair though there’s plenty of legendary artists — literally the MAJORITY that also do not have the chart stats that you think would match how they are viewed in public status so it is weird Beyonce gets singled out for that constantly.
Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, 2Pac, Aretha Franklin, Nirvana, AC/DC, U2, Jimi Hendrix, Coldplay, etc didn’t have chart presence similar to what their legacy might make one expect and nobody feels the need to bring that up. It only matters so much in the end. Her longevity also speaks for itself, majority of artists with bigger chart presence than her at some point do not possess her longevity.

Bad is 11x platinum, which is big in any era. Off the Wall is 9x platinum, also big in any era. Dangerous is 8x platinum, also big in any era. While others may have been selling sell that much with a single album at some point in there, that is selling high on a consistent basis. But yes, Thriller beats them all (and all other albums period). I am not sure why you include Led Z here. Their fourth album is 24x platinum. They have 5 Diamond albums. As for those others, since they aren't current artists why would anyone feel the need to talk about them now? We don't know what kind of media and social media presence they had (or would have if current). Coldplay is the only one who has been out at the same time as Beyonce, and they don't get near the media and social media coverage of Beyonce so why would people talk about them?

Bad had the largest singles push for an album in history and was only 8x Platinum when said and done (didn’t reach Diamond until he died causing a massive surge in his catalog). Big? Yes. But on par with his media status and phenomena that would make one believe he was *miles* ahead of Madonna, Bobby, Whitney, Janet, Paula, George, and other superstars at the time? No. They also had similar selling albums during 1987-1989. Thriller was the only time he ever sold far and away above everyone else like his media status always entailed. It’s the same as Beyonce having albums that sold pretty good but yet also similar to Rihanna, Drake, Katy, Bruno, P!nk, Timberlake, etc albums at the time despite having a much bigger media presence and phenomena behind her name. Led Zeppelin has had a total of 3 top 20 Hot 100 hits, so yes, they would be another example of an act that in some form had much less chart success than their legacy would indicate. The general public would obviously know more of their songs and be gasped to find out they less success than acts such as Paula Abdul, Milli Vanilli, and Ashanti on Hot 100.

Cuff It might be another example where airplay peak and streaming peak don't match - like Woman by Doja Cat which spent ages on chart but never reached very high.

Oh now we're switching to the Hot 100? Anyway Led Z didn't even release commercial singles a lot of the time so their songs weren't eligible to chart. That disqualifies them from comparison. Also, maybe you were, but I wasn't alive when Led Z were releasing music so I can't say what their "hype" and status was at the time.

How did I just now realize Sweater Weather is at 11 on the recurrent charts and will likely get higher once last week's chart comes out? I can see it re-entering once Taylor and Lil Baby's album bombs fade back if it doesn't re-enter this week.

Per HDD, it was at 7.3M last week. Probably won't happen this year, but you never know. I'm rooting for it! EDIT: Just saw that at least one predictor has it re-entering with ~9M streams on the 10/15 chart. If HDD is really undercounting its streams (I'm not super familiar with their numbers), then I definitely think it has a good shot in the coming weeks.

Naturally the site for the TikTok chart stopped updating as soon as I started trying to post it here! No problem, I'm going to start using tokchart.com/ instead. It provides a little less detail, and I believe the comparisons are versus yesterday, rather than 7 days ago. The ranking here appears to be based on total TikToks created in the past 24hrs, which is a pretty good measure of virality. It should still give us some solid direction as to what's blowing up on TikTok. Weekly TikTok Update, October 10 (past 24hrs) Rank | Song | Artist | Vids | US Sptfy | 4 | (⯆1) | CUFF IT | BEYONCE | 46k | 14 | (⯅8) | 5 | (=) | UNHOLY | SAM SMITH & KIM PETRAS | 40k | 1 | (=) | 7 | (NE) | FORGET | XXKATUSJINSUX | 33k | - | | 8 | (NE) | PUNTO 40 | RAUW ALEJANDRO & BABY RASTA | 31k | - | | 9 | (NE) | COOL KIDS (SPED UP) | ECHOSMITH | 31k | - | | 10 | (⯅2) | ADDRESS IT | LPB POODY | 28k | - | | 14 | (⯆4) | BIZCOCHITO | ROSALÍA | 25k | - | | 16 | (NE) | DUMB DUMB (SPED UP) | MAZIE | 19k | - | | 22 | (⯆1) | SUNROOF | NICKY YOURE & DAZY | 15k | 32 | (⯅1) | 35 | (⯆5) | CALM DOWN | REMA & SELENA GOMEZ | 10k | 105 | (⯅12) | 40 | (NE) | TOMORROW 2 | GLORILLA & CARDI B | 8k | 53 | (⯅13) | 42 | (⯅2) | UNDER THE INFLUENCE | CHRIS BROWN | 8k | 25 | (⯅1) | 72 | (⯅5) | LOVE IS GONE (ACOUSTIC) | SLANDER & DYLAN MATTHEW | 5k | - | |
*TikTok Rank +/- and Vids are both past 24 hrs. Spotify +/- is based on 7-day change.
