I agree with you. It should have remained an album track. It may fit best hearing it during the film. But as a standalone single it is extremely boring and not deserving of #1.

Since when have Rihanna songs ever debuted at #1? Let alone 2 consecutively. I like the optimism though, I wouldn't mind Rihanna getting more #1s.

I had this exact same discussion with people when Work, Diamonds, We Found Love, Only Girl, etc, were out. Every time there are always some people who expect her to debut at #1 for some reason and it never happens. I think it all stems back to Britney Spears because she did it a few times and ever since then there's been a sub-section of pop music fans who expect every song to peak on release week. But with \Rihanna in some cases her big lead singles barely even make the top 10 on release week, and sometimes don't even manage top 10 at all!

I doubt this song will ever go to #1 to be honest (I haven't heard it yet, but I don't see much enthusiasm online), but even if it did it would more likely be in December or January rather than now I think. And the same with whatever she's releasing next week.

I can still see Lift Me Up challenge for the #1, there’s still a certain side to the GP who likes it, and imo it isn’t as bad or boring as some are saying on here. The hype alone could carry this through, and its already in the top 20 on AM smuggling its way through the Taylor album tracks. It’s a beautiful song made for a soundtrack of a movie that had to take a different direction because of an unfortunate situation.

Airplay played a huge role, so it was almost impossible to debut at #1. I mean, the fact that I Knew You Were Trouble and Roar weren't #1 when they sold 582k and 557k respectively...

Also, I don't think she ever released a music video in the debut week, which was an important promo move back then.

She was never a big first week force, nothing to do with airplay.

We Found Love debuted #7 on Sales and Diamonds also debuted #7 on Sales.

Her albums all struggled to debut #1 and her first week ceiling was always 150-250k, versus many of her peers doing 500k+ openings at their peaks.

She was always a slow burner, many people thought her first weeks were never huge because of the constant releasing and to the public her eras sorted blended together.

She took a notable break this time and her brand/name is in better light than ever, so there was always the possibility she could have a surprising opening with this return. However this song just isn’t hit material at all so.
