I wonder if they'll play the game like they did in the 00s/10s.

I know it’s a sound track song but it’s kinda of lower than I expected. She’s #2, just slightly behind Swift, with 9M+ if we combine the instrumental version which clearly cannibalised the original. That debuted at #93 with 1.4M streams. Either way, Rih. surpassed the first day debuts of many other OST songs. If she can do this with an OST song, her ACTUAL lead single will have no problems and do twice as much.

I wonder if they'll play the game like they did in the 00s/10s. We do not have 2nd day streams or 2nd day sales to have a more accurate prediction so this is pure bait

Regardless of the type of song she chose to come back with, based on hype alone I expected higher numbers. Look at her radio numbers… clearly the label was expecting something huge or why else have a soundtrack song have this huge of a radio deal, over 26 mil audience on first day is just crazy. These labels aren’t even trying to hide it anymore.

It’s NOT impossible but don’t even have day 2 numbers. These accounts want nothing but engagement anyway. Whenever there’s a big release by a ‘Main Pop Girl’ (Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Adele, now Rihanna etc), they do this. Go to the comment section right now - it’s literally Swiftie’s vs The Navy. 💀

idk why the song didn’t come out the same day as the movie. It’d resonate more with people when they hear the song while a chadwick boseman tribute is shown in the theater

I don’t want to hear anything about BTS “manipulating” the charts when these MPGs are out here doing this.

In Halloween news, Friday saw a few annual classics return to the US Spotify charts!
93. Monster Mash - 374,889 98. This is Halloween - 371,303 140. Thriller - 302,957 150. Ghostbusters - 293,945 181. Disturbia - 273,237
Interestingly, Thriller's streams are down almost 40% vs the Friday before Halloween last year (489k).

I guess the one good thing about these radio deals is that if the songs don't connect with audiences, they come crashing down hard but yeah, radio deals of this magnitude are ridiculous.

No illegal exchange of money, everything is being done within the bounds of the FCC, etc. Radio can play whatever songs they want, and they wouldn't have agreed to do so, at least in part, if there wasn't clear demand and hype for her. Were you also saying this should be illegal for songs you like?

Stations don't just all play a new song this much out of the kindness of their hearts, so there is a 'deal' there. What do they get out of it?

What do they get out of it? they get to say they're "playing that new new Rihanna record every hour" every ad break 💀 everyone is thirsty for her to release music, so this radio start is not shocking to me, the spins it got with or without a deal. the song is off to a modest start on Spotify so Apple Music and those radio updates must be how its vying for the Top 2. I'd predict somewhere in the Top 10, maybe Top 5.

I think context matters as to the discussion above. It is both true that this is very clearly a soundtrack song but also that it is the first song from Rihanna in awhile. Considering one without the other ignores the bigger picture.
It’s reception clearly indicates strong interest, but I’m sure it will be front-loaded with a song like this. I don’t even think you have to get into a conversation as to whether the song is “good” or “bad” either - it just doesn’t have traditional heavy replay / playlist value in its composition.

Stations don't just all play a new song this much out of the kindness of their hearts, so there is a 'deal' there. What do they get out of it? Listeners. They want listeners. These radio deals are an agreement between labels and radio stations to serve a mutual interest (LISTENERS!!!) Yes, streaming is a thing that many people can just run straight to Spotify/Apple/Service-Of-Choice at their earliest possible convenience, but for everyone else these radio deals are a massive blinking 'NOTICE THIS' sign. You wanna hear X artist's new song? Tune into our station, we're blasting it frequently today! The radio stations pull an audience which makes their advertisers happy, the increased exposure redirects traffic to sales and streaming which makes the labels happy.

Hmmm what am I missing? Won't it have to really hold on to be head of Unholy, Bad Habits, etc to be #2? It definitely will need to do that, and there's still a chance a Taylor Swift song not named Anti-Hero holds well enough to stay in the Top 2. But then again we don't even know the second day numbers yet, and this is some pretty clear clickbait even if it maybe does have a chance for the top 2.

We are talking about RIHANNA's first song in like 6 years, of course they will play the shit out of it, I'd too.
That stands for Taylor's first pop song in years, and Adele's comeback single too.
