the song title is so long that the first time i played it i didnt realize i was listening to the instrumental... i was sitting there waiting for the vocals to start and they never did, i wonder if a lot of people made the same mistake as me lol The exact same thing happened to me yesterday, I'm wondering why I'm not hearing any vocals and that was the reason why.

Back of the envelope expectation-setting / prediction for this week: rihanna's day 1 radio numbers are nuts. that being said, she needs continued radio growth and a strong streaming hold throughout the week to contend for #1. it's taylor's race to lose right now.

With it's current trajectory, Lift Me Up could end up with ~70M at the end of tracking which would be enough for a Top 3 radio debut. That could certainly put it in contention for #1 assuming it doesn't completely fall apart in streaming.
Still #1 on US Apple Music so that's a good sign.

I made that exact slip-up because I queued the song from the search bar. Judging by how unusually high the instrumental is on the dailies/live, I'd say this is indeed a relatively common occurence.

Why should they be illegal, when technically, they are not doing anything illegal? No illegal exchange of money, everything is being done within the bounds of the FCC, etc. Radio can play whatever songs they want, and they wouldn't have agreed to do so, at least in part, if there wasn't clear demand and hype for her. Were you also saying this should be illegal for songs you like? So how do these "deals" work? Stations don't just all play a new song this much out of the kindness of their hearts, so there is a 'deal' there. What do they get out of it? “Coming up in 5 minutes on Q100FM. The BRAND NEW song from Rihanna! Her first in 6 years! But don’t worry if you miss it, we’ll be playing it on the hour all day today!” Now people won’t feel the need to change the station. It’s such an easy sell to listeners. The only reason why people have such an issue with it is because we all call it a “radio deal.” Is it a deal? Does anyone actually know? It’s only common sense that a radio station will want to get the scoop on a song people have been waiting literal years for. It’s probably the only thing they have in their corner to grab/keep listeners these days other than radio contests. Edit: or what kimk and az already said 😂

I mean in the grand scheme of things it would make more sense for radio to actually play the new releases instead of holding onto old songs

Tbh it’s still pretty impressive Rihanna will get a top 2 debut (her career best) with a 3/10 funeral song that is entirely different from her prior catalogue of hits.
This is honestly like if Beyoncé’s Spirit or Taylor’s Carolina was a comeback single after 5 years.
If this was actually a song that was remarkable in any form or single worthy this would’ve been an easy #1.

Would reserve any judgment on Lift Me Up's potential until at least its third day number is out, but good to see that at least radio seem to be fully on board with Rihanna (at least for now). Won't be surprised if the soundtrack song/comeback after 6 years dichotomy ended up splitting the song's performance in the middle as in the former is reflected in its streaming number but the latter is reflected in its radio number. Though, Rihanna's singles had never really been massive out of the gate so who knows.

Crazy to see 3 different women top 3 on Apple Music with solo songs! ESPECIALLY when a Lil Baby album just came out 2 weeks ago and he's the second biggest artist on the platform after Drake.
Even crazier is none of the 3 women are female rappers, when Rap is the genre that runs the platform.

And none of the 3 women are female rappers Taylor Alison Swift did not SPIT "my ex-man brought his new girlfriend she's like 'oh my god' but I'm just gonna shake and to the fella over there with the hella good hair won't you come on over baby we can shake shake shake" to be disrespected like this

I'd imagine the streams have dipped considerably from last week but Taylor's album is holding pretty well on Apple Music almost 3 days into the new tracking week (she currently has 6 songs in the top 10 and 10 songs in the top 20). My guess is that Spotify will continue to be where the album performs the best but seeing the album do this well on Apple Music is very encouraging.
On the other hand, I'm kinda surprised Kodak Black's album hasn't really done anything on Apple Music. His album is #3 behind Taylor and Lil Baby's album and he's only got 3 songs in the top 50 but then again, this is his second full-length release of the year so maybe he just doesn't have the kind of fanbase that shows an extended amount of support.
Either way, I'm excited to see where Rihanna/SZA's songs debut on the Hot 100 and also interested to see how many Taylor songs stick around in the top 10 in the second week.

In the middle of all this, Meghan Trainor's Made You Look has entered the US Spotify Top 50! It's impressive! We have another Bebe Rexha-like chart comeback again!

how am i obtuse? apple music is still generally dominated by men. that is a fact. if you think me saying that is stupid, that's on you.
We went 30 weeks in a row this year of no female #1 albums. Is observing that also a sign of obtusity?

When I first heard it one of the first things that came to my mind was Diamonds, it's almost like a slower version of that song (and I think probably in the same key), and of course she's also had slower introspective-type ballads, like Stay. Clearly it's off to a great start, so it must have some degree of remarkableness and single-worthiness.

Key is something that really matters to me when it comes to liking a song. D and A are very similar keys tho, so I can see how you would mix those up.

Is observing that also a sign of obtusity? notice how nobody said Apple Music isn't still dominated by men? people are literally pointing out how three women (none of them in hip hop, no less) topping the charts is rare and deserving of championing, and you're out here telling them what they already know and pointing them back to two weeks ago when, naturally, this very rare feat they're discussing hadn't happened yet. I know, it's really a shame that women in music get left behind, a lot of the times it's due to (cis het) men never choosing to listen to women at all, because of how fragile their masculinities are. RENAISSANCE being the first female album to top the charts this year in fucking August is still bonkers! and we've only added one more to the tally for women with BLACKPINK, until Taylor came along this week. follow my personal charts if you want to see women dominating music, lol: pulsemusic.proboards.com/thread/191053/kim-chartdashian-weekly?page=14
