You mean to tell me that Rihanna could’ve scored her 15th #1, even if it were a weak one, had it not been for streaming falling over the last few days. Yes, it could have been #1 if it was popular. It's wild to me it could be #2 as it doesn't feel that popular at all. Its streaming eroded quickly, and while radio may be a different audience, it also feels like this crazy start at radio is just off initial hype/promo. I'm interested to see how it holds up at radio next week.

Rihanna has broken the record for all-format radio adds at Mediabase with an astounding 519, thanks to her Black Panther: Wakanda Forever song, "Lift Me Up" (Roc Nation/Def Jam/Hollywood). The track was #1 Most Added at six formats: Pop, AC, Hot AC, Rhythm, Urban and R&B. The prior champ was the mighty Adele, whose 2021 smash "Easy on Me" (Columbia) racked up 451 adds in its first week. Def Jam's Noah Sheer and Natina Nimene, Roc Nation's Lester Pace and their teams are putting on their spandex superhero outfits right now.

Hmm… I heard that song on the radio yesterday. I didn’t think it was all that bad, but it doesn’t strike me as a #1. Maybe I’ll come back to it and see if it sticks more. Curious to see how much movement will take place in the top 10… if any. Michael Jackson’s “Black Or White” topped the Top 40 Radio Monitor/Hot 100 Airplay charts in 1991 with 75M listener impressions and that was the then record. It was the first song to be added to over 200 Top 40 radio stations across the United States, 227 out of 237. It was also the first song to be heard by over 70M listeners. Although said 79M AI figure is low, I’m not sure if its fair to compare “Bad Habits” to it as the Airplay charts only had 75 ranking positions then and were solely ‘Pop/AC’ based. Also, this was 1991/1992, not 2022. •Fun Fact•: The first song to cross 80M AI was Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”. The first song to cross 90M AI was Donna Lewis’ “I Love You, Always Forever”. That’s pretty interesting because I had no idea. You’re right, the airplay panel was basically Mainstream Top 40 until they added AC in 1993. Curious what the high end for impressions on MT40 is. I would assume “We Belong Together” owns that record, given it was MASSIVE on the radio and crossed a number of formats.

damn, bejeweled is #2 on apple. feels weird that it's sitting only at #10 on spotify.
Taylor has 5 of the top 7 on apple rn.

Given Anti-Hero is getting a proper pop push, I'm curious if Taylor will have a second single from Midnights. Aside from Anti-Hero, the poppiest songs are Bejeweled, Karma, Question...?, and maybe You're Own Your Own Kid

^ if we're going off what stations are responding to the best, its Lavender Haze & Bejeweled. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if she made Karma a single at one point, though

'Karma' is probably my least favorite track (and the most reductive) but it does seem like a missed opportunity for memes/tik toks or whatever.

I wish the Holiday Songs chart started with the week that includes Halloween. It would be fun to see "Thriller" and others chart there, and the day after Halloween kicks off the Christmas season anyway so plenty of songs are getting some streams and even airplay.

Back of the envelope expectation-setting / prediction for this week: rihanna's day 1 radio numbers are nuts. that being said, she needs continued radio growth and a strong streaming hold throughout the week to contend for #1. it's taylor's race to lose right now. Day 2 update. Probably the last one as I imagine Twitter predictors will start posting tomorrow. Big updates: -Midnights still seeing a ~15% daily streaming drop, so lowered the projections for Anti-Hero (=) & Lavender Haze (-1) -Lift Me Up (-1) had a much more subdued day 2 on radio and streaming. Now projecting it to land in the #2-5 range. -Added Shirt by SZA, whose streaming held better than any recent debut on day 2. Projecting #5-6 but could do as well as #2 depending on Apple Music numbers. rihanna.store/She now has the original and instrumental available on her website. How much would she need to sell there to make up the difference? EDIT: also are your numbers taking into account the new airplay metrics?

I doubt Rihanna has a rabid fan base that will brew up 25K+ more sales in under 2 days

I am not sure about that. Rihanna doesn't seem to have many stans that will buy the song from the website.

I think some songs topped 100 million AI there.

The record audience on the Billboard Radio Songs chart is indeed held by “Blurred Lines!” Right, we were wondering specifically about the Mainstream Top 40/Pop Airplay chart though, which I wasn't able to find. I think some songs topped 100 million AI there. Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” holds the record for the song with the most listener impressions on Pop radio - 132M AI as per Mediabase. It also holds the spins record on Pop too. (With radio being where it is now, I don’t see this ever changing). Other songs that broke 120M AI on Pop radio: 1) Closer - 127M 2) Hello - 124M 3) See You Again - 123M 4) Cheap Thrills - 122M 5) Uptown Funk - 120M Audience records on Pop radio clearly peaked between 2015-2017. For the 2000’s, I believe the song with the most listener impressions on Pop radio was Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” with 90M AI and this was in 2002.

There's more uncertainty than usual this week because no one knows how Billboard will handle the radio switch from Nielsen/Luminate to Mediabase. Arguably the simplest method would be to just plug in the new numbers without changing the formula. This would give all songs with substantial airplay a boost. Here's how it would impact Winston's prediction if you swap in Mediabase numbers: All songs without significant radio would fall - namely, Taylor's album tracks and Shirt would all drop several spots. Vegas (22->12) and Sunroof (19->9) would see the biggest boosts, which makes sense seeing as they're the most radio-driven tracks right now.

The fact that it has similar radio adds to Easy On Me is just ridiculous... at least the general public was streaming EOM.
