Billboard - Mainstream Top 40 - 2022 Year-End Chart
Nov 11, 2022 19:09:29 GMT -5
Post by Cerebro on Nov 11, 2022 19:09:29 GMT -5
The Billboard chart year has come to a close. The chart year started with the issue dated November 20, 2021. All evidence points towards the year having ended this past week, with the issue dated November 12, 2022. As always, I'll make adjustments if I have the cut-off wrong.
Billboard's poiicy has always been to only count spins for weeks that a track spent on the chart. Spins below #40 and recurrent play are not counted. As we all know, Broadcast Data Systems (BDS), which Billboard has used for the last 31 years, is no more. Billboard has, now, switched over to using Mediabase for tabulating all of their airplay charts effective as of the November 12, 2022 chart date. BDS was shut down on November 1st. The actual spins were no longer available after that date. As such, that I had to approximate the numbers for the last two weeks of the chart year. That said, anything that was still charting after the October 29th chart may not be accurate. What we have also learned about the changeover, is that Billboard will use a different reporting panel than the Mediabase published charts (as evidenced by this week's weekly chart) and that they will continue to compile their charts using the same parameters they applied to the BDS data (the recurrent rule is, still, 20 weeks on and below the top 15 and the year-end rankings will reflect songs' activity while on the chart). We'll see if that's, indeed, the case when the official year-end charts are released early next month.
For the artist rankings, spins are divided amongst the performers credited on each track. A single-billed artist gets 100% of the spins. If there's a featured artist, the lead gets 75% of the spins and the featured, 25%. Duets are an even 50/50 split. Etc. This is how Billboard has done it. Again, we'll see if things change.
My year-end tabulations from previous years:

With the switch to Mediabase and the shut down of BDS, Billboard's spins are no longer available to us. It looks dubious as to whether or not I'll be able to continue to keep tabulating this chart in the future. Maybe I can come up with some sort of point system to, approximate, the rankings. If not, it's been a good run.

Harry Styles lands at the top of the year-end chart with "As It Was", the lead single off of his third solo album Harry's House. The song's incredible staying power is, largely, responsible for propelling it to the top. It is, still, in the top 5 on the weekly chart, and has been there since May. The song being on top, also, illustrates how NOT counting recurrents can make the rankings a bit different (as you'll see when I present my projections for the Mediabase year-end rankings, in the coming week). "As It Was" is one of three songs to spend 7 weeks at #1, the most of any other song, this year. The other two are "Easy On Me" and "About Damn Time".
Justin Bieber is the only act to place two songs in the year-end top 10. He lands at #7 with his solo hit "Ghost" and at #4 with his collaboration with The Kid LAROI, "Stay" (both #1 hits).
This year has, perhaps, shown that age is just a number. There would seem to be no greater evidence of this than a 75 year old Elton John making a comeback and becoming the oldest person to ever have a top 10 hit on this chart. And he had two of them with "Cold Heart" and "Hold Me Closer". And from the same side of the pond, Kate Bush celebrated her 64th birthday riding high on the renewed success of a song she recorded 37 years ago, "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)". The song, barely, made a blip on the U.S. chart in 1985, but became a smash hit in 2022 after being used, prominently, in the Netflix series Stranger Things.
On the artist rankings, Doja Cat takes the honors as the year's top artist. Between her lead and featured credits, Doja put in 8 top 40 appearances during the chart year. More than any other artist. 4 of those songs went to #1. Harry Styles ranks in as the top male artist and Glass Animals, the top duo/group. Latto is the top new artist. Nicky Youre and Dazy tie as the top new males. The Walters are the top new duo/group, just missing the list at #55 (and they're not really, "new", per se).
