Yeah "RATCT" will need a much bigger lead. "AIWFCIY" was #9 on Youtube USA's weekly top songs with 3.33M streams last week. "Last Christmas" is the only other holiday song on the chart, and it was down at #53 with less than half the streams. "AIWFCIY" is also #33 on Apple Music while "RATCT" is not in the top 100.

It's certainly possible it could happen this year, and RATCT tends to get closer as Christmas nears. That's mainly due to Spotify, where the 'classic' holiday songs tend to do well, perhaps because of playlisting. Notice that as Thanksgiving has neared the older holiday songs have made bigger gains and passed some of the newer holiday songs.

Lol asking anyone to remove their music from services for a week is definitely an overreach. It would upset fans but also those services since people clearly want to hear/purchase the song and that helps iTunes, Amazon, etc.

I think Brenda's team have done what they can for the most part. They have discounted it on iTunes in the past (I haven't looked this year), created a new video for it 3 years ago, and have great playlisting for it on Spotify and others. I guess they could do some physical product or something, but I doubt there's much demand since Lee isn't someone with a Swift/BTS fan base. "RATCT" does have a good shot at #1 since it has been close the past couple of years.

I don't disagree with any of that, but let's remember the song hit #1 on Digital Songs in 2005. Did she do anything for the song back then? It was also one of the top 10 most played holiday songs on radio in the early 00s as it made the Billboard Holiday Songs chart at that time. It was always doing 'its thang' and will continue to do so, without or without Mariah pushing it. I do think it's likely other songs will take their turn at #1, too, again with or without specific promotion for it.

you recall correctly. The UK singles chart is a good (or terrible lol) example: Ellie Goulding’s “River” soared to #1 fueled pretty much just by Alexa playing it first when asked to play Christmas music.

As for Mariah giving Brenda a week, I don’t think she’d do that. Maybe at one point, but I bet she wants as many weeks at #1 as possible, considering the records on the horizon. It’s Mariah we’re talking about, she knows how to play the chart game.

Brenda Lee was singing “RATCT”, live, across the United States when Madonna and Michael Jackson weren’t even a year old.

At 77, I’m sure she could care less but the fact that she just chills in her rural Mississippi cottage as the song dominates every year is amazing.💀

Is Brenda getting money from the song? I'd love if so, but she didn't write it so I'm doubtful.

Considering she was a female singer during the 1950s without a writing credit I'm gonna guess Brenda's checks are comparatively smaller, even if her song comes close to AIWFCIY (Mariah owns her masters and has writing credits).

Mariah doesn't own her masters (yet), but being one of the two writers is definitely big. She also owns the publishing, I believe.
