sped up version is the 'key change' of new the generation Gen Z wants fast paced music again. I knew it hyperpop or something similar is gonna happen y'know if you keep saying Hyperpop is going to go mainstream, it's not going to happen even more.

US Spotify 13 (+13) Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree [828,229 streams] 15 (+10) All I Want for Christmas Is You [815,582 streams] For comparison (2021-11-20 which was third Saturday of November and second day of Adele's 30 release): 32 (+14) All I Want for Christmas Is You [580,199 streams] 49 (+25) Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree [461,987 streams] 2 things 1. Holy heck the numbers have increased. 2. Can Brenda actually be ahead of Mariah on the Hot 100 for (i think) the first time?

2. Can Brenda actually be ahead of Mariah on the Hot 100 for (i think) the first time? Probably not. It is just tiny advantage on one streaming service. Mariah is still on the lead on overall streaming, sales and radio.

"Last Christmas" is the only other holiday song on the chart, and it was down at #53 with less than half the streams. "AIWFCIY" is also #33 on Apple Music while "RATCT" is not in the top 100.

Ah, welp, i guess it's just me hoping in vain that RATCT can beat AIWFCIY on the charts for a week or so, even if i like the latter more.

With Unholy topping the radio charts, Kim Petras and Sam Smith make history as the first trans and first nonbinary artist to top Radio Songs

It's certainly possible it could happen this year, and RATCT tends to get closer as Christmas nears. That's mainly due to Spotify, where the 'classic' holiday songs tend to do well, perhaps because of playlisting. Notice that as Thanksgiving has neared the older holiday songs have made bigger gains and passed some of the newer holiday songs.

I know it would never happen, but in a fantasy world, Mariah and team could let Brenda Lee get a week at #1, but this is a business for profit, so would never happen.
How many points does AIWFCIY usually have when at #1?

How exactly would it even work for them to "let" Brenda have a week at #1? Remove "AIWFCIY" from streaming for a week? That obviously won't happen, but not even related to the song on the charts. Mariah's team has never even discounted "AIWFCIY" on iTunes (whereas "RATCT" has been discounted at various points) so historically Mariah's team hasn't done anything overly specific to get it to #1 apart from some physical product for its 25th anniversary.

Exactly, remove it from Itunes, or Spotify, but not going to happen. Not sure what Brenda's label could do to get it to #1. Anyway, Brenda also has Taylor to deal with this year.

Lol asking anyone to remove their music from services for a week is definitely an overreach. It would upset fans but also those services since people clearly want to hear/purchase the song and that helps iTunes, Amazon, etc. I think Brenda's team have done what they can for the most part. They have discounted it on iTunes in the past (I haven't looked this year), created a new video for it 3 years ago, and have great playlisting for it on Spotify and others. I guess they could do some physical product or something, but I doubt there's much demand since Lee isn't someone with a Swift/BTS fan base. "RATCT" does have a good shot at #1 since it has been close the past couple of years.

Pretending AIWFC doesnβt benefit from the annual promotion from her and her team is silly. She may not release physical products every year but itβs not like she does nothing. But asking her not to promote to let Brenda get number one is also silly.

Eh considering most of the big holiday songs are by artists who are dead (or in the case of Brenda, fully retired) it's clear promotion is not needed to make them a hit. Additionally I've never seen a performance of "AIWFCIY" where it saw a big jump in sales or streaming right after. The general promotion Mariah does might help her brand, but I think the popularity of the song exists separate from the promotion.

Her Loss holding pretty well on US Apple Music 3 days into its third week. It still owns all 10 spots in the top 10 and 13/16 spots in the top 20.

The song IS her brand every October to January. Now she doesnβt need to lift a finger and it will do its thang every year, but she still serves anyway and Iβm sure it helps, just as Iβm sure lamb stans do their part.

I don't disagree with any of that, but let's remember the song hit #1 on Digital Songs in 2005. Did she do anything for the song back then? It was also one of the top 10 most played holiday songs on radio in the early 00s as it made the Billboard Holiday Songs chart at that time. It was always doing 'its thang' and will continue to do so, without or without Mariah pushing it. I do think it's likely other songs will take their turn at #1, too, again with or without specific promotion for it.

Okay. Iβm kind of not sure why youβre making something out of what I said initially though. It seems we agree but your post is still reading as defensive or argumentative. Am I reading them wrong? Apologies if so.

I know it would never happen, but in a fantasy world, Mariah and team could let Brenda Lee get a week at #1, but this is a business for profit, so would never happen. How many points does AIWFCIY usually have when at #1? Mariah doesn't start promoting ($$) every year during Halloween just to let Brenda Lee get a consolation week. Exactly. Mariah prides herself on being the Queen of Christmas.

Mariah is *singing* AIWFCIY at the Macy's Parade.
Actually, the industry can decide whether another Xmas song reaches #1 through playlisting and playlist positioning. Algorithms - Alexa, YouTube, free tier streaming - can be *tuned* to choose which song comes next, etc. I could've sworn that AIWFCIY was moved down a big Spotify playlist for a short period and it was impacted.

Yeah, and especially if it gets close, I could see them letting up this promotion a bit to try to "let" Brenda take the #1, as a gracious act of one legend to another.

The UK singles chart is a good (or terrible lol) example: Ellie Gouldingβs βRiverβ soared to #1 fueled pretty much just by Alexa playing it first when asked to play Christmas music. As for Mariah giving Brenda a week, I donβt think sheβd do that. Maybe at one point, but I bet she wants as many weeks at #1 as possible, considering the records on the horizon. Itβs Mariah weβre talking about, she knows how to play the chart game.

yeah, for now I think the only way for RATCT to hit #1 over AIWFCIY is if they make a big push for the song's 65th anniversary next year.

Mariah's made being the "queen of Christmas" part of her brand while Brenda Lee just kind of vibes and lets the checks come in every year. I would love for RATCT to get a week at #1 but itβs gonna take a lot of really good timing and very specific circumstances for that to happen. As is I still love seeing Brenda take the #1 on Spotify Brenda Lee was singing βRATCTβ, live, across the United States when Madonna and Michael Jackson werenβt even a year old. At 77, Iβm sure she could care less but the fact that she just chills in her rural Mississippi cottage as the song dominates every year is amazing.π The true Queen of Xmas, I fear.

Considering she was a female singer during the 1950s without a writing credit I'm gonna guess Brenda's checks are comparatively smaller, even if her song comes close to AIWFCIY (Mariah owns her masters and has writing credits).

Mariah doesn't own her masters (yet), but being one of the two writers is definitely big. She also owns the publishing, I believe.
