The 2022 Year-End Alternative Chart Rankdown (REVEALING)

Small ballot updates are still B-B-B-B-BALLOT UPDATES, and we've gotta get this done before I forget to do it. macattack, zaclord 🌈, OCDave, khan, Steel Sponge, let's see how all of you have impacted the Alt RD.

- From six songs spending every movement in the top ten in the first update, that number goes down a smidge to five in this ballot update. The two songs that have spent every movement in the top five are still there, though neither are the current #1.

- In fact, the current #1 displaced the last update's previous #1 a few movements ago and has improved its position seemingly with each subsequent submission. As of right now, it leads #2 by 45 points and already has a 100 point cushion as high up as #7. Things remain closer between the songs sitting at #2, #3, and #4, though the gap is larger now than it was last time.

- Two songs escaped the bottom ten that were stuck there all of the previous update, meaning that six songs still find themselves in every bottom ten. The bottom five is still chock full of those songs, though one of the three songs that has still spent every movement in the bottom five is not in the bottom three currently.

- Things are starting to look bleak for our long-reigning #100, which finds itself over 60 points behind #99, over 80 points behind #98, and well over 100 points away from escaping the bottom five. How far away is it from escaping the bottom ten now? How about 250 points behind #90?

- Things aren't as close as they were last time with the race for the top ten, though there's still a handful of songs in the hunt for that elusive top ten spot. Right now, ten points separate #10 from #11. The bottom ten race is also heating up, with just a single point separating #90 from #91.

- ONE, TWO, THRESHOLD! #1 is our first song to cross 1,200 points, while the other songs in the top 7 have now reached 1,100 points. Fourteen songs have crossed the 1,000 point plateau. On the other end of the RD, nine songs have yet to get to 300 points, though things are much bleaker for the bottom five, as they have yet to even get to 150 points, let alone 200.

- There have been some significant changes to the standard deviations in this update. The highest SD in the first update has now switched places with the song that had the third highest SD in the first update. The new highest SD song is currently just inside the bottom 40. The next couple of highest SDs are in or around the top 40. The low end of standard deviations does have a lot of changes below, but the lowest SDs have a similar feel to them, with the songs in the bottom two still occupying spots in the top five. Our current lowest SD, however, is our reigning and defending #1.

- TIE GAME?!?!?! Wait, that's not the right Simpsons reference. Let's try again...



Sadly, no alarms need to be sounded this update. In fact, there's barely any ties to be had. The two lowly ties are close to one another, at #38 and #42.

Okay, gonna try to sneak this in before Pulse falls apart again. Leo ✔, wrip, Fire, gooberdude, bbfan97, American Idiot, let's go on the B-B-B-B-BAAAAAALLLLLLLLLOT UPDATE TRAIN!

- The same five songs that have spent every movement in the top ten are still there without having left the top ten, with the same two songs also spending every movement in the top five. Once again, neither of those songs are the current #1.

- Our current #1 is the #1 from the previous ballot update, but it finds itself in a dogfight with #2. While its lead over #2 is nearly 30 points, it has swapped places with #2 recently. #2, meanwhile, is nearly 50 points clear of #3 and over 100 points ahead of #5, so this is shaping up to be more and more of a two horse race. Things are also opening below the top two: #3 and #4 are pretty close, but those two songs are well above #5, while there's an even bigger gap between #8 and #9.

- We have yet another bottom ten escapee (though said song is in the bottom ten right now), as five songs cannot escape the bottom ten. These five songs are our current bottom five, with two songs still yet to get out of the bottom three.

- Did I say that things were looking bleak for the previous update's #100? Well, have I got news for you: We have a new #100. It's still all to play for at the bottom, with a little over 10 points separating the two lowest songs in the RD, while #98 is also inching closer to the #100 spot. Those three songs are in a world of hurt otherwise, with nearly 300 points separating #90 from #100.

- The closest race in or around the top ten right now is actually for #9, with three songs competing for two top ten spots. #9 leads #10 by less than 10 points and #11 by less than 20. The race to the bottom ten remains hot, if not quite as hot as before, with a handful of songs still trying to avoid the bottom ten.

- THRESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSShold. #1 is our first song to reach 1,700 points, with the next three songs having gotten to 1,600 points. Nearly half of the rankdown has crossed 1,000 points (48 songs, to be exact). Meanwhile, only 14 songs have yet to get to 500 points, while our bottom three have still yet to get to 200 points.

- Ready for some more standard deviations changes? We have a new highest standard deviation, for one thing. It's a song that had a high standard deviation before, but it now vaults ahead of the last update's previous highest SD to become our new most divisive song. This song is much higher than the previous highest SD was, fighting it out with the other songs around the top 20. The previous highest SD shouldn't rest on its laurels, however, as it's still the second highest SD. As for the lowest SDs, well, not only do we have a new lowest standard deviation, our previous lowest SD (the reigning #1) is no longer among the top five lowest SDs. Instead, our current lowest SDs all find themselves near the bottom of the rankdown, with the song at #95 becoming the latest song that people feel the most similar about. In fact, all of the nine lowest SDs are either in or around the top ten or in or around the bottom ten.

- Cue the Hank Williams Jr. actalike, because it's time for...



Once more, there are not a ton of ties, and the two ties we do have are close to each other, with the ties being found at #56 and #59. That said, the latter tie is a three-way tie.

Hi, let's finally start looking at the numerous extras that the 2022 Alternative radio format had to offer. First up, let's look at some of the New and Active extras, and we've got a lot of them. We have so many that we're going to have to break them up into multiple parts. So, to be clear, this is not all of the New and Active extras. Later on, we will also be looking at the extras that can be ranked in one of the other 2022 rock chart rankdowns, as well as a few other songs that all deserve their own time in the spotlight.

For now, here are just some of the songs that got radio airplay, but not quite enough to break through into the top 40. There are plenty of notable songs here, but I wanted to single out four songs from this group specifically: A third song from Wet Leg that would have been welcome here, a pretty good song from Sports Team, a Broken Bells song that I'm surprised did this poorly, and another solid song from Beach Bunny.

Some great songs at the top balanced by some truly terrible songs! One song in my top 20 will probably finish very low (maybe even bottom 10?), but I like it for some inexplicable reason. I don't think (hope?) that any of my bottom 10 will make the top half, but every year I'm surprised. 

Since I kept up with the charts very closely this year (thanks to Daryl the Beryl's YouTube videos and chart postings) there were no true discoveries on this list. A few stats:


#1-28 all did well enough to place on my weekly Crownnote chart at least once. 
#29-60 are all at least decent and spent at least one week on my personal "radio station" playlist.
#61-74 are songs that I didn't particularly care for, but they didn't aggravate me or make me want to skip the song. 
The bottom 25 I just did not like, and some came from bands I typically enjoy.
