I think her future in music will likely be sporadic features (would love to see her on something like Illenium/galantis), soundtrack songs (Oscar’s?) and Kellyoke with the occasional album drop when she has time. I’m ok with this - we are getting great covers regularly, she’s digging into her DEEP (and random) album cuts almost weekly, and she’s a mom with completely different priorities. I totally get not wanting to tour anymore.

Per that page's discussion about what Kelly would be doing if not for the show. Specifically, as it relates to the start of Meaning Of Life being the yardstick by which we should make a prediction...
I don't think one should make hypotheses based on outliers, and Meaning Of Life was such an outlier for her. She had just left RCA, they were letting her make a style of record she had wanted, Atlantic poured masses of budget into the project, it was launched with such fanfare, she worked the sh*t out of it promo-wise...and it didn't do very well. In fact, it was her first project, ever, not to at least get a hit single or sell huge amounts. I think Kelly and Atlantic were confident it would do much better than it did.
Given that this was the time where Kelly's popstar hitmaker finally hit 'the wall'. What happened next, in the aftermath of an underperforming project with little radio play (that took massive amounts of work, money and energy - generating a very bad rate of return on any king of physical, creative, financial investment) and what might have happened next is better viewed - and imagined - via what she does on her off-time in the present, and what she did in between projects that she regarded with far less passion and energy in the past.
She said, multiple times, that ranch life is the life for her and she'd do the show from there. That's where she's gone on her off seasons. Between 2007-2011, when she was off-cycle, she practically vanished off the face of the planet. Months would go be without word of sight of her.
So sorry, no I don't believe that after Meaning Of Life performed poorly and her days as a Pop radio staple had come to an end, as she approached her fourties, that she would have rushed back to the lab and began the 18 month cycle of pounding the pavements with a young family creating music, promoting it in theaters/clubs around the world, roadshows and radio shows etc. all to diminishing returns and financial losses, simply because she was energized to release Meaning Of Life in 2017. Nor would any major label just bank roll it because she's nice.
What happened is what any entertainer who wants to have it all (family life, stability, success) does...pivot. She and her team relied on her strengths, and made her one of the most successful entertainment broadcasters in America, in a decade. One who STILL found time to release three albums in seven years (2017, 2021, 2023), EPs, dozens of recorded duets, and performed nearly a thousand songs in pristine, perfect quality daily, year in year out. To a fanbase who still seem to feel short-changed when it comes to music.
I'm not saying there aren't other things I wish for her. But I don't wish working her butt off to release albums every 18 months that nobody listens to and living the nomadic, exhausting life that made her so unhappy from 2005-2010 though. Nor I'll bet, does she. Nor I bet, would it be possible for her to even if she did.

Not sure if this has been posted-- really lovely vocals on this, not a huge fan of the song but her voice is gorgeous as ever. Kelly’s voice sounds magical here what does everyone else think?

Nor I'll bet, does she. Nor I bet, would it be possible for her to even if she did. I mostly agree with this, with one caveat: she had just signed to a label so she'd have to release albums still, probably more or less the exact two we got given the divorce. I remember after MOL she said she and her label were talking about what to do with the next album, perhaps leaning even more into R&B/blues in one interview, and then there was later when she mentioned the album she was working on was that MOL/Breakaway/Stronger (I think those are the three) hybrid. I think she even mentioned having recorded and then scrapping most of it with the divorce ("my mistake," for example, was part of these sessions). I'm thinking with Atlantic she prioritized creative control above all else, money included, and that's why Atlantic has seemed genuinely supportive of what she's done after MOL didn't do anything close to what they seemed to expect and hope for. They let chemistry sit on the shelf until she was ready, and a few insiders on ATRL all but said Kelly was the one who denied doing additional promo (plus writer's strike issues). She's never not worked an album to death until this one; I think she felt ready to release it and then the reality was a different thing. She seemed to confirm this in Atlantic City, saying something about feeling so far away from these songs. In hindsight, I wish she had just dropped it much earlier with a statement that it was just to get it out of her system and provide something for people who were going through something similar, but it was too personal for her and she wouldn't be performing it. Of course I see and share the desire from fans for her to release something new right now--she sounds, looks, and seems to feel better than ever. What an exciting time it would be to launch something new. But as Jack said, it also feels like some grotesque form of audacity to ask for more than what she's giving us, which is a truly extraordinary amount of content and career-redefining, legacy-cementing success and more live singing than any other popstar on the planet.

I think the point I was mainly trying to make is that I don't think she would retire to Montana like another poster said if there were no TKCS. If she wanted to retire, she never would've signed with Atlantic and released MoL in the first place. Surely she had enough money at the end of the Piece by Piece era that if she wanted to be done, she could've been. And still she chose not to be. Whether that was for her, her kids, her band, or whomever. Or even just for full creative control with music. That was a very different conversation back in 2008-2010 when fans at her concerts would literally chant, "two more albums!" on the AIEW tour, and she would join in.
I don't watch TKCS or really listen to the Kellyoke's outside of her classics. So I can definitely see where people are coming from relative to wanting her to focus less on the talk show and more on music. It's less a "I want her to do both" and more a "I'd (selfishly) rather she focused on the other instead of the one she is focusing on." Putting aside commercial success (which is hard to do for pop artists sometimes), I think she'd agree that she has made the best music of her career with chemistry, When Christmas Comes Around, and Meaning of Life. And I hope we get more of that sooner than later. Of course, I can see (and tend to agree more with) the flip side of this too, where TKCS has done wonders for her career and celebrity status more than even 50 Meaning of Life-sized albums would have done.
On an aside. Did Meaning of Life really do THAT badly? It debuted in the top 3, Love So Soft hit the top 20 on pop radio, and the tour (despite being her shortest) is her highest grossing tour to date outside of the Vegas residency. It also did really well critically, and she still gets random praise from people like Mariah Carey for this album specifically. With or without a big hit, it certainly did more to cement her legacy than an album like Piece by Piece or even (arguably) All I Ever Wanted ever did for her. I feel like she thinks that album is a success regardless of the numbers it pulled in. That, and I'm sure it still broke even at the end of the day considering Atlantic didn't spend anything on it after Love So Soft.

^ I didn’t do *THAT* badly but it was rough. It’s best thing of note were it’s pure sales which actually barley dropped at all compared to piece by piece. Love so soft may have hit top 20 on pop but to me it felt momentum based as the song quickly left the chart.
I disagree strongly that it was more important than all I ever wanted. That album returned her to radios good graces. Had two huge singles (and a moderate performer) one of which broke a major record. The follows ups from meaning of life absolutely tanked.

At the risk of indulging purposeful or accidental obtuseness.
No, I didn’t say she would retire if it weren’t for the talk show. I said she gave everything she had to Meaning Of Life, and it performed averagely at best. She pivoted. Which again, makes sense she was not going to tour the world and work any record globally with a young family, the way she did ten years prior. No, Meaning Of Life didn’t have more impact or success than Piece By Piece (an era which features probably her most famous live performance outside of her winning one of A Moment Like This) or All I Ever Wanted (the lead single of which resurrected her career at Pop radio, and features one of the biggest ballads of her career. Yes she was reinvigorated to do her first record out of her Idol contract…so?

I still want Kelly to have a pop career. I don't really get why some feel against it. There are ways to make innovative, smart pop music that radio will play. Yes, she needs to do promo and have label promotion as well. Chemistry was important for her release and it is a great quality album but I would love to see her take on a SUBG 2024 style and make it her own but still fit in with trends. I think she could still have that mainstream success because of her likability and her high presence in the media. There were some songs on Chemistry though I feel like could have been big. I'd like to see her land a big A List duet or single though, she deserves it! She doesn't NEED It but it still would be nice (to me)

Ok so she needs to immediately re-record Beautiful Disaster (2024 Version) and put it on Spotify. Just incredible.

What other 42 year old female popstars not named Beyonce are regularly getting platinum albums and airplay in 2024?
Kelly’s Pop career is akin to Avril, Nelly Furtado, Fergie and Gwen. Albeit it lasted longer on Pop radio. They are the case studies by which you can judge other lanes from the fork in the road.

I know she wasn't ready to release C hemistry sooner but I fear it will become a norm for her to take years (4+) to release a new album. I hope that doesn't become the case. Honestly, if it weren't for the talk show she'd be with her kids in Montana, lol. I'm glad we still get new content from the talk show though and have the Olympics to look forward to. Fingers crossed for a Kellyoke 2.0 EP at some point too. Just so we are all on the same page, this was the post that started this discussion in the first place. Without TKCS, she absolutely would not be "in Montana with her children". Didn't mean for this to become an argument, but felt it worth discussing since it gets brought up so much in here where she'd be commercially without TKCS but we have almost never discussed what she'd actually be doing without TKCS.

No matter how it hits, she needs to release Beautiful Disaster as a single record! It’s still awesome after 21 years!

The only problem with chemistry was the promotional single choice. There remains potential in music industry to her. Meanwhile, I do believe it’s important to make Underneath The Tree top 10 on Billboard Hot 100. It was just #11. She didn’t have it after 2016 so it would encourage confidence to her for sure.

Albeit it lasted longer on Pop radio. They are the case studies by which you can judge other lanes from the fork in the road. Just because there may not be others doing it isn't a reason for it to not happen.
Also, many of the people you mentioned have completely disappeared off the map for years at a time or focused on different things. Kelly has maintained a true public presence, is a better singer than all of them, and is universally liked. While I enjoy the artists you listed, there are many people who always bash(ed) Fergie for example. She was extremely polarizing through out even her peak. Also Avril, Gwen, etc. are all generally known for one genre or sound. Kelly has the power to truly transform and fit into any genre she chooses which again gives her a leg up. Age in 2024 isn't what it used to be years ago, there are plenty of "older" artists that have been getting "Surprising" hits on radio or the charts in the recent years.
Long story short, Kelly can still claim the mainstream pop arena if she truly wanted it. There's no reason to just "accept" that her time has come to just give up on it. It is a shame people think that way.

All I'm saying is that I do think it's a fair argument that TKCS is delaying new music. And to me, that's fine! But I see where people are coming from who would prefer she not do TKCS and focus more on releasing new music more frequently. And I think if not for TKCS, she would be releasing music more frequently. So tl;dr is I disagree that Kelly would retire and go live in Montana full-time with the kids if not for TKCS. I'm inclined to believe we would be getting new music more frequently from her if not for TKCS. My personal opinion is I'd rather have her do TKCS, but I can see where some fans are coming from when they say they'd rather have new music more frequently than have her on TKCS. Agreed on the bolded part. Since TKCS is her main priority career-wise now, it's totally fine we're not getting new original music. I love that she's on TV 5 days a week and we're getting new covers every day. I even liked her on The Voice where we'd also get to hear new covers. We're very lucky to get new music in this capacity. What other fanbase can say this? TKCS and The Voice kept her in the public eye instead of things being much quieter, which brings me to my next point... I never actually said she was going to retire, though. We know Kelly has the Olympics coming up, she's working on something for Broadway, and probably has a bunch of other projects going on we don't know about. She likes to work and keep busy! The fact that she keeps reaching new peaks in her career over 20 years later proves just that. Just like Jack said earlier, remember what it was like between albums from 2007-2011? Kelly practically went radio silent. The only time we'd see her is if she'd pop up at another artist's show, someone would randomly run into her in public, or a producer would say they were in the studio gearing up for new music. She's absolutely entitled to her privacy and time off, but it's nice having her on TV every day even if it means a new album isn't on the way any time soon. Despite her being much happier with Atlantic and seemingly having more creative control, I still think we'll be waiting longer in between eras for new albums because her priorities have shifted.

Adding to this conversation again.
I know the focus is TKCS but it also depends on what's in her contract with Atlantic, as to when her next album will be released. Weren't they pushing for album 2 and she wasn't ready so that's why When Christmas Comes Around was released? Or am I just rewriting history? At some point the record label will want some sort of album out.

Despite her being much happier with Atlantic and seemingly having more creative control, I still think we'll be waiting longer in between eras for new albums because her priorities have shifted. I feel the need to just say I wasn't trying to shade you, but that point made me think. :) I wasn't around in the Kelly fandom from 2007-2011 (joined in 2012) so I'll have to take your word for it that she was radio silent between projects, though I have to ask...for how long was she truly between projects during that time? My December came out in 2007, the MD tour was from 2007-2008. 2008 she toured with Reba. 2009 was the AIEW era and tour. 2010 had Don't You Wanna Stay and all the leaks. 2011 had Mr Know It All and the start of the Stronger era. So in those 4 years, there were 3 tours, 3 albums and a duet...and MLWSWY, Already Gone, DYWS, and (to a lesser extent) MKIA all performed well on radio and in sales. That seems like an awful lot of content and I can see where mama would get burned out. And yet, obviously she has even more going on now than she did back then. Maybe we're just spoiled with how much Kelly wants to work! To clarify an earlier point. IMO, Meaning of Life did more to further her music legacy than anything on AIEW or PbP did. It's worth noting MLWSWY is the only AIEW, and Heartbeat Song the only PbP, song consistently in her concert setlists. She has gone on record as saying she'd cut MLWSWY if she could. And let's be honest, she absolutely could and like 3 people would miss it. She could cut Heartbeat Song too and River would miss it...for now. Her teenage years are coming up soon, I think she'd prefer to leave that song behind like the rest of us. Meanwhile, both Love So Soft and Whole Lotta Woman are nightly staples in her concerts (even her corporate shows) and I don't see either of them leaving anytime soon. Maybe it's because they're so much newer, but I'm more inclined to think it's because she knows that album furthered her sound more than anything on AIEW or PbP did. Not to mention, both Piece by Piece and Meaning of Life are gold certified and AIEW is platinum certified. Considering sales in 2009/2010 were very different than sales from 2015-2018, I hardly think that's a huge difference.

"Kelly wasn't inactive in 2010, loads of her songs leaked that year!!' "I don't need to hear Heartbeat Song, one of her biggest streaming hits ever, and none of the general public/casual fans going to listen to a greatest hits show would miss it because I wouldn't" "Kelly sings two songs from Meaning Of Life regularly which means it was one of the most impactful albums of her career" "You want me to clarify my point about how Meaning Of life furthered her musical LEGACY more. Why? How? Here you go 'Meaning Of Life furthered her musical legacy more', cool?" "Kelly has expressed dissatisfaction, disillusionment or depression with the touring/creating/promoting of at least four of her albums, has said her life in Montana is the one she likes best, vanished in off-cycle time after time in the past, but she was excited to release her first Idol-contract-album, and I liked it so in my imaginary scenario about her career had it not pivoted into a focus on television, she would have been releasing albums non-stop and stuffing her children on busses to promote new albums every 18 months around the world".
I'll repeat. In the last seven years, we've had more recorded music, and vastly more live music from Kelly than the seven years prior. Any suggestion television has slowed down her musical output is incorrect.

Has Kelly covered any Celine or Mariah on Kellyoke? I would love to hear it! I believe she's just done one from each: I wish she'd do more! She's done like half of Whitney's greatest hits lol. I believe someone asked about Mariah songs once and she offhandedly mentioned something about rights, so maybe those are trickier. She's also never done Beyonce solo. I would love for her to get around to doing all her Idol songs. I'd kill to hear her do "I Surrender" now. Also I want her to do "Stuff Like That There" in the same/a lookalike dress, I feel like that would have a little viral moment.

Oh wow! Those were flawlessly done! Of course they were. 🥰 I would LOVE to hear her redo "I Surrender" too, as she killed it the first time around, despite being really sick! I know her voice would soar so beautifully on that song today! And "Stuff Like That There" would be absolutely devine. The live from idol remains one of my favorite performances ever from Kelly. Her voice and cadence really shines on old standards like that. She is most definitely one of the strongest vocalists I've ever heard and her consistency is unmatched. I mean I have never heard a singer with her range whose actually gotten better after 20 years of singing, even more soulful and grittier too somehow. It's insane. Gotta love Kelly! Thank you for sharing those two with us and hopefully they can find a way for her to cover more of the trinity cause it's heavenly!

I’ve been bored of this fake-world that Kelly fans live in on here, which rewrites Kelly’s career as a recording artist as hampered, slowed down significantly, or sabotaged by her career as a broadcaster and television personality.
That said, her career as a TV star began in earnest in 2018, yes? Seems fair to tally the releases made since that time (seven years) with the seven years prior to her career pivot.
I haven’t included live recordings properly in the tally, as the last seven years would eclipse the seven before that by about 70-80 fold. Anything where she went in the studio, recorded, and released seems fair game. So Piece By Piece, for instance, gets counted twice because she went in and recorded it again. Duets count on both sides of the ‘fork in the road’.
I’ve also noted any extenuating circumstances (people seem to forget the fact of Covid or her marriage ending, as any kind of influence on breaks between albums).
2011-2017: Recorded releases (included having two children)

69 (+800 studio quality live recordings) NOTE: We’re only halfway through the year, so who knows what original music or how many more songs are coming before end of. NOTE 2: There were half a dozen more The Voice duet records featuring Kelly I couldn't find or remember.
77 vs 69? Where is this huge gulf? This absence of Kelly Clarkson the recording artist’s output? I don’t see it. I’d argue Meaning Of Life era was as her career as a television personality had begun, certainly behind the scenes. But we’ll count that as before she ‘abandoned recording to be on TV’ to be fair. Am I missing these years in the wilderness where Kelly - who sings songs she’s written to millions of people every week - the songwriter/vocalist/artist has, to any notable degree, been absent for consumers and fans?

Not a big Bon Jovi fan but she sure sang the hell out of that. Funny to see those bloopers. She’s so real. Can you imagine some other artists doing that?

"Not even because I wasn't hitting the notes"
The notes being ones so high they're out of reach for 98% of singers today lmao
