I definitely don't think it's time to write Ed off in the US entirely, he's still hugely famous and his last album had two MASSIVE hits. This album isn't very commercial and can get pretty uncomfortable at times, it's just not an album with wide appeal. I think we have to wait for his next album to see if he really is done as a hitmaker

And she was only credited on S&M for just one week anyway, so that's not a good example. Same goes for Nicki Minaj with Say So, with Super Bass and Starships also being bigger hits for her anyway.

It's interesting, as a big Ed fan I actually think the opposite and think Eyes Closed is the highlight. Not surprisingly I probably like + the least, which means maybe I don't like his more acoustic-y and left field stuff, and maybe the gp doesn't either.

Probably. I think it’s already surpassed Love You Like A Love Song as Selena’s longest charting hit, atr I wouldn’t be shocked if it gets to 52 weeks. Really the only argument against it is the fact Lose You To Love Me was a #1 hit.

I'm not an Ed fan at all, so for what it's worth this is coming from someone with no vested interest in his career. But I think it's really premature to write off his US career at this point. He chose a bland lead single and then decided to roll out the album era anyway. I'm not surprised he's flopping here, but I don't think it means he won't come back stronger and more strategically next time. I don't see him reaching "Shape of You" levels again, but I'd be shocked if he doesn't have another big hit or two in the future.

Because of how stagnant the chart is at this moment, I can see Eyes Closed having longevity and garnering enough points to make the 2023 year end. I don't know if it will reach a new peak on the Hot 100 but if it could get 7 more weeks in the top 40 it will be considered a moderate success for Ed Sheeran, this late in his career.

It would be one of the biggest chart upsets ever if he missed #1 in the UK. I think he'll open with the biggest sales of 2023 in the UK so far (I think Lana Del Rey or Pink has the highest 1st week sales so far). But it'll be far from his previous dominance, and he'll probably be far off Taylor Swift and Arctic Monkey's massive first week sales in 2022.

A lot of UK artists tend to still have success in the UK for quite a while after they fade away in the US (for example Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding are currently #1 in the UK, even though they don't seem to be in the Hot 100 much anymore).

The charts are stagnant but at least they are 2023 hits being stagnant, unlike last year when we were in May with 2021 songs still sitting in the Top 10.

While it's a generally accepted idea that the charts became stagnant because of the pandemic, that's not entirely true. 2019 was as stagnant as 2021, at least for the top 10.

Imo, even though Covid had a hand in this issue during the last three years, I guess there are two main reasons: streaming services have "killed" singles. Nowadays, artists release fewer singles per project, and because of streaming, only those singles released prior to their parent album tend to have any significant impact on the charts (see, for example, Flowers vs River or Anti-Hero vs Lavender Haze).

Less songs being pushed as singles means that there are less songs that could top or get into the top 10 and make the charts not-stagnant.

I feel like they're not? There's not a ton of movement but it's great most of the current hits were released this year and Spotify streams have been healthy this year.

A bit too slowly ... Eight of  the top 10 of Radio Songs are also in the top 10 of the Hot 100 including Last Night. It's hard to say how much Last Night will end up growing in weekly radio audience, but it seems its daily gains are finally slowing down. Fast Car is somewhat being overshadowed a bit by Love You Anyway, but the former does have the advantage of having crossed over into radio formats other than Country. I guess a couple of other songs that should edge their away into the top 10 of Radio Songs in the next few weeks would be Eyes Closed and Chemical.
