i expected it to spend one day on the US Spotify 200. just one. i don't think that was a particularly unreasonable expectation considering they teased it for weeks     

I think the unfortunate reality is that Sam's mainstream career is on a steep decline, accelerated by a new image which turned off a large portion of the public. Unholy was a surprise fluke, fueled by Tiktok. Hopefully after this era Sam will return to a more organic sound that places vocals at the forefront.

But also the reality is, Sam is at the point of their career of not caring about their commercial appeal to please the masses for this era as stated in many interviews, their current world tour is quite successful even selling pretty well in the USA, but honesty I do think Sam can INDEED win people back with an more “Back to the Soul/Pop Roots” approach but way evolved, I just don’t want mostly ballads hence why Sam got bored in the first place

I would have liked this so much more if literally anyone else had recorded it. The ballroom influences are just subtle enough to keep this accessible, but they didn't neuter them or try to retrofit that sound into something else entirely.

it's one thing to make an honest mistake (even though they've openly been a they/them for almost four years now) but misgendering them while saying that their new image turned off a large portion of the public (which is objectively not true since their career was in dire straights pre unholy and that ended up being a bigger hit then ANYTHING they released in their "tasteful era" with the possible exception of stay with me) and the only way for them to possibly get another hit is for them to go back to making tasteful piano ballads catered to straigjt people is a bad bad look my friend

Honest mistake about the pronouns, I've edited my post. My point still stands that, whether rightly or wrongly, Sam's drastic image shift caused reputational harm. Unholy smashed because it's a bop and went viral. Yet even with a global smash song and all the biggest promo spots, the follow-up singles went nowhere and Gloria debuted *worse* than Love Goes which had no hits, little promo and came out at the height of the pandemic. Generally, people consume singles because they're buying into the song, and consume albums because they're buying into the artist.

But to me honest I don’t know how Sam can fix their reputation at this moment without sacrificing their integrity, it wouldn’t be right to appease to the masses after Gloria’s entire of being self-expression and imperfection, you have many people calling them “Satanic” because of the Grammy performance, how on earth do you come back from that?

Love Goes did have hit singles, hence why it’s Platinum over here (close to 2xP eligibility), and sold close too 7M WW, it’s literally Sam’s second best selling album according to chartmasters.

What if they gather mainstream appeal in the beginning (due to fluke or otherwise) and later narrow that focus, which is probably the most realistic and common scenario tbh.

What’s impressive their current world tour is doing good, 85% sold in the USA and don’t start for another month plus the other legs after that are selling out, they have an audience in some way but their commercial appeal has definitely nose dived but i somehow do think Sam can still achieve hits just it’s gonna much harder to do now

I’m Not Here To Make Friends should have been a follow up hit to Unholy, but I don’t know if the video killed it’s potential or what, but Sam wanted to make statements, and they did. Just keep your nose to the pavement and keep going, but yes, it might be a struggle now.

It was mostly certainly the MV, but the entire Gloria campaign itself with negativity every time Sam posted of them dancing, walking the street with a dress on it just promoting the album.

My mutual friend suggested Sam could do what Demi Lovato/Halsey did adding back the He/His pronouns but keep They/Them pronouns, which is absolutely ridiculous because Sam has been non binary for 4 years now, the backtracking would definitely piss more people tbh
