Aside from Anti-Hero, Midnights honestly doesn’t have any true sounding smash hits. It’s not packed with smash hits like 1989, sorry.
Her career has been going perfect the past year, but the only mistake she made imo was having Jack Antonoff be the producer behind the entirety of Midnights.
If she wanted to truly have a full-form return to Pop with a bunch of smash hits then he wasn’t the producer meant for that. There’s not many strong choruses, productions, or melody for radio on the album. The album sounds dull too often and underwhelming and stats/career trajectory aside, in the long run it’s going to be one of her lowest ranked albums quality wise.
Jack Antonoff is meant for indie/alternative music (which is why he was a good choice with folklore/evermore’s purpose). He isn’t meant to be a Top 40 producer, he simply doesn’t have the ear for it. Had she gotten Max and/or Shellback on multiple songs she would’ve had some other huge hits secured.

Well it’s hard to say he’s only meant for indie music when Anti-Hero was literally one of her biggest smashes ever. I agree there isn’t anything else as instant as Anti-Hero on Midnights, but she is literally smashing with Cruel Summer right now, which is another Jack Antonoff pop production. 😂 He is more than qualified to produce big pop hits it seems…

I’m going through his list of credits and his most notable work I’m seeing is Lana Del Rey, St. Vincent, Florence & the Machine, Lorde, The 1975, Clairo, etc. As I said the indie-alternative area is *his* lane. There’s nothing wrong with that. The fact Midnights has like 22 songs in all… and aside from the lead single there is not really any catchy strong undeniable radio hits says enough. I’m not saying he’s incapable of making Pop hits, but that’s just clearly not his expertise and the sound he has the natural ear for. You’re not going to get Max Martin to make a Reggaeton song, you’re not going to get Timbaland to make a Country song. Every producer, like artist, has the sound/style that naturally works for them otherwise it’s a gamble. Jack single handedly producing the entire album was what hindered it quality wise and hit wise. It also doesn’t really help that he also was the main producer for her prior 3 albums. Hopefully she switches it up on the next projects and starts working with more producers again. I don’t think he has anymore real progression to offer her music at the moment.

And Taylor can get really big radio hits with those. Delicate was the steadiest hit from reputation, 1989 had 3 ballads reach the top ten, one of her first big hits was a ballad, the fan favorite from red was a ballad,
