Her career has been going perfect the past year, but the only mistake she made imo was having Jack Antonoff be the producer behind the entirety of Midnights.

If she wanted to truly have a full-form return to Pop with a bunch of smash hits then he wasn’t the producer meant for that. There’s not many strong choruses, productions, or melody for radio on the album. The album sounds dull too often and underwhelming and stats/career trajectory aside, in the long run it’s going to be one of her lowest ranked albums quality wise.

Jack Antonoff is meant for indie/alternative music (which is why he was a good choice with folklore/evermore’s purpose). He isn’t meant to be a Top 40 producer, he simply doesn’t have the ear for it. Had she gotten Max and/or Shellback on multiple songs she would’ve had some other huge hits secured.

I really disagree with all of this, and the stats prove otherwise. Lavender Haze and Karma also peaked at #2, with the former reaching #5 on pop (maybe a slight "underperformance" in this context), but the latter will very likely be heading to #1 soon. Not to mention she held the entire top 10 in the album's debut week, so the fact that it was her highest opening week ever and heavily front-loaded from the get-go, it's unreasonable to expect it to produce a long string of #1 pop hits like 1989, as it is for all albums in this day and age. It's audience has simply been over-saturated and burned out. Though keep in mind, they also have to contend now with Cruel Summer and Speak Now TV (as well as pretty much her entire catalog that's experiencing a resurgence now), so it's possible they would've been able to focus on more singles from Midnights if those weren't in the way. The album itself has an 85 rating on Metacritic, one of her highest scores, so it's not being received poorly quality-wise. So, given the circumstances, it's probably performed as best as can be expected.

Thing is, there are several ballads on Midnights.
And Taylor can get really big radio hits with those. Delicate was the steadiest hit from reputation, 1989 had 3 ballads reach the top ten, one of her first big hits was a ballad, the fan favorite from red was a ballad,

Is Bleeding Love a ballad? If so than Blank Space is sonically similar enough to be considered one.
Regardless of that, Style and Wildest Dreams are absolutely ballads. Just not AC ballads.

Although it's off-topic, it's fascinating to see Blank Space resurging recently without any formal promotion. I hope Taylor releases Blank Space as the lead for 1989 TV, and it would be interesting to witness its debut at number one, making Taylor the only artist to re-release her own song and have it peak at number one.

Was Taylor even thinking about making an album full of hits with Midnights? I genuinely think the huge success of the album caught everyone by surprise. I felt like this project was her excuse for going on a tour. She has nothing to prove at this point in her career even with the success of this album.

My random thoughts towards the above discussions regarding Midnights:

(1) Not every song from an album has to sound like a hit, because not every song will be a single.
(2) In her case, her fans will make almost every song she released a hit (top 40 on Hot 100) by definition if they really want to.
(3) Does Max Martin/Shellback really have the midas touch in producing a pop hit now?

Yeah I gotta agree with the user who said Midnights isn't full of commercially-viable smash hits like 1989 was. The melodies throughout Midnights just aren't as universally accessible and the hooks aren't as strong. I truly hope she drops the one producer note and branches out to several for her next album. I don't mind Jack contributing to TS 11, but with more contributions I'd imagine we'd not only get quality material next album, but more single-worthy songs as well.

Pop music is different now than in 2015. I think a good number of the songs on Midnights are just as commercially viable as the 1989 singles. Obviously they’re not Max Martin style but most popular songs aren’t in this age. And a lot of 1989 isn’t super radio friendly anyway.

Barbie World could get there but we've seen how Princess Diana did. It could peak higher given the top 3 are weaker but it's probably not beating Last Night. I also won't put money on Thugger beating Morgan even with the Drake features, though he could get close.
