Looking over the various Going For Adds section of the R&R charts this week, several Christmas songs are "going for adds."
Am I missing something here? What's the point of going for adds before a station will play you? I mean, no one will start playing Christmas music yet. Wouldn't the best time to go for adds be the week of Thanksgiving?

Christmas songs should go for adds during the week of Thanksgiving... Can't believe I've heard Britney Spears' "My Only Wish (This Year)" already at Sears... Yeah I was there yesterday...

Well, if I had to choose I would have to say never! Unless the song was original. But I would agree to have them go for adds the week of Thanksgiving.

I also agree with Thanksgiving as the starting point.

Definitely the best week for a X-mas song is the week of Thanksgiving. Black friday sets everyone in the christmas mood and if I were a record copmpany I would capatilize on this yearly tradition

Maybe they go for adds so to make sure the songs are available to play. I'm sure these songs aren't really made to be big radio hits but I suppose if they go for adds this early, there's more of a chance for growth before all are banished the last week of December for another 11 months.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too...They probably just want to get added now so that by the time December rolls around, the stations already have the song ready to play...
Personally I like Christmas music...I wouldn't mind a year-long radio station that played Christmas music...Would be fun to listen to every now and then, especially on really hot days in like the middle of July...

I saw on All Access that WLTW is about to go all-Christmas. It didn't say when but I'm under the impression that it's any day now, if not already.

I think it's the day after Thanksgiving...WLTW did the same thing last year...
Z100 usually does like 24 hours of Christmas music, from like noon on Christmas eve to noon Christmas day...Personally I like listening to them, though they repeat the same songs way too much...By the end of last Christmas eve, I knew all the words to the Waitresses "Christmas Wrapping"...

If I remember correctly, WLTW didn't change over until mid-December last year. I seem to recall them taking a listener poll just before Thanksgiving as to when the all-Christmas format should begin, and that most people said wait a few more weeks.
I have mixed feelings about the all-Christmas format. I am a huge fan of Christmas music, so it's nice because I always know where to find it when I'm in the mood. On the other hand, it suffers from the same problem that any other format suffers from -- too much repetition, while too many other great songs get ignored.

And if the AC stations all go Christmas, the Hot 100 will become even more Rhythmic leaning than it already is now. I didn't even think a more Rhythmic leaning Hot 100 would be possible. And I agree with Michael about why he has mixed feelings about the all-Christmas format. I'd like it a lot more if it started around Dec 15... and I also hate how the day after Xmas, you won't even hear 1 Xmas song on the radio... I think they should still be played through Dec. 31.

That's the way they do it here..actually they don't really start playing x'mas songs until the 10th and go on till New Years. I've noticed that's the way it is in most countries besides the US.

I have read posts about stations playing Christmas music after Christmas, at least one station played Christmas music in January 2003. Jersey Boy is right, Christmas music could be what sends "Calling All Angels" to recurrent on the Billboard Hot 100. It makes me wonder if it's even worth it to make an Adult Contemporary chart in December. I also think December should be its own radio station ratings period. I don't remember the dates, but Arbitron takes a break in December.

Kiss 108 in Boston usually goes all-Christmas like Z100 on Christmas Eve-Christmas Day, I believe. Their AM sister station, KISS AM1430, which normally plays oldies (50's, 60's) goes completely Christmas the week of Thanksgiving!
