I never understood why BTS stans were so crazy anyways. What made BTS that special? Only cause it was a K Pop group?

Admittedly I did like a few songs from them, but Dynamite and Butter were not some of them.

not really. plus, web store sales mainly benefited rich and greedy artists with massive fan bases, and virtually no one else.

that's interesting. 3% is much less than i would've thought. granted, i would expect sales revenue to be higher for bigger labels since they have more resources to put in.

this makes sense because billboard is thinking longer-term, about continuing to be seen as legitimate. billboard benefits a lot from stan clicks, but it's a double-edged sword because any rule change could be seen as favoring/singling out certain artists. that's my guess as to why this didn't happen back in 2020-21, when it was a bigger problem. better to wait until they can slip it under the radar.

This rule exclusively hurts Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and the K Pop Acts. Everyone else will do about the same. Maybe Olivia gets a moderate hit this week as well.

Since the sales became effective on the release date, I'd assume they won't count. Olivia still gets the $$$, just not the chart points.

Never mind, I see below that Olivia only had physical, not digital singles. Those will obviously count since the rule only mentioned digital.

I do not see a "vampire" digital download listed on Olivia's website. so she won't "lose" any sales to the rule change.

all singles she's already sold are physicals I think, shipping this week. those will continue to count, from what I gather.

i think that it would have never had a week at #1 cause a huge portion of its weekly sales were D2C. afaik, ARMYs chose to buy the countless versions on the BTS website because itunes have rules set in place to soften the blow of mass buying events.

No, her webstore sales were all physicals, not digital sales. Those sales will still count toward the Hot 100.

"Butter" was never No. 1 on Streaming, the same with "Dynamite" and every single BTS #1 song. Now thinking of, BTS' entire Hot 100 run was based on pure chart manipulation and mass buying.

Honestly, what an amazing change. The many #1 songs that reached the top spot because of mass-buying was ridiculous. I have nothing against the artists that will likely suffer the most because of this new rule (like Taylor, Nicky and BTS), but it was tiring to see the Hot 100 becoming more of a fandom's dick-measuring competition rather than a list of the most popular songs in the US.

The only fear I have is that it gave artists a big incentive to push remixes and alternate versions. They of course usually end up on streaming, but let's be real, the boost that came from physical sales was the primary goal which is why the delay existed in the first place. As a big fan of remixes I hope this doesn't stop artists from commissioning them as much.

True, in the UK there are people like Alex Day and The Kunts who get in the chart by having like 30 remixes of their songs and some of fans buy all of them.

But I'm a big supporter of remixes. I love it when a single comes out and it gets an EP with 5+ remixes like Rihanna did with Only Girl, S&M, We Found Love, Where Have You Been, etc. It's sad so many artists don't do it anymore. I would love some dance remixes of Cruel Summer.

Stan sales-frauded #1s were already struggling hard in 2022/2023 compared to 2020/2021 but website sales still made it possible for songs like "Like Crazy" to debut at #1 — and only for 1 single week.
 
Safe to say that stan sales-frauded #1s are entirely finished now, including one-weekers. That era is never coming back. Remixes will not change that.

My guess is Billboard felt empowered enough to make this change because streaming is so huge now and singles sales represent a TINY portion of revenue. It's a non-factor to record companies at this point, and doesn't have any future left in it. They are all-in on paid streaming at this point, and revenue keeps growing YoY due to it. All changes will favor it moving forward, not dying stan sales.

Like I said, they have to have physical sales, since the website digital downloads are out the door. There is still Amazon , and the other common, streaming/purchasing apps. The focus will be on those if the moves are there, we will just have to see tho🙂.

Physical sales are fine because they cost money to produce and are limited resources. Digital sales on the other hand? There is no limit to the fraud because they're infinitely sellable — iTunes sales are at least somewhat legitimate compared to D2C sales (which are thrown away or unused entirely).


It's also pretty much impossible to sell 100K+ in a week with iTunes alone now mind you, I don't think it's been done since "Dynamite". The figures driving such high volumes were D2C sales.

Most people are not happy about this on twitter. They don't like that "payola" and "playlisting" were not removed first. I think this was a good decision
