What is a “signature song” though? You’re opening Pandora’s box here lmao hahaha oh I know. I'm just curious because this question gets asked every three months and nobody ever really explains what it is and instead just cites off an artist's biggest hits, usually multiple, even though a signature by definition is a singular thing. Michael Jackson didn't have multiple signature moves. He had the moonwalk. Ariana Grande doesn't have multiple signature looks. She has her ponytail. Why do so many artists have multiple signature songs? If you have four signatures, at some point they no longer count as signatures. You just can't be trusted to sign a legal document. Mainly, I think it's just a phrase journalists and writers use to fancify their writing when writing about artists.

To Rose Bros, point I think there is something to be said about perhaps generational distances, and how different generational groups may view a signature song. For instance, someone who grew up with the artist, and within the time that they experienced the artists peak may associate a signature song to them for that moment in time, while other generations who are 'just catching up' to that particular artists music may associate another song to them.
For example, Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' has become one of her biggest songs ever, but that is a relatively recent phenomenon, it wasn't her signature song for the first 20 years of her career. It became her signature song over time.
You could say the same for Rihanna, Umbrella was her song - until We Found Love usurped it. I think that's why people say an artist has more than one signature song.
Britney's debut of ...Baby One More Time was iconic and set the standard for what she would be known for, but it's hard to deny at this point that Toxic is probably going to be known far and away as the song that she is most known for and is likely to define her legacy as an artist.

I agree for Britney. I think "Toxic" would be the likely one, but "Oops I Did it Again" is the second contender, maybe "Baby One More Time" in third place.

Ariana Grande - 7 rings/Thank u, next/Side to Side. One Last Time to a lesser extent.
Bad Bunny - Dákiti/Me Porto Bonito/Tití Me Preguntó/Callaita
Beyoncé - Crazy In Love/Halo
Bruno Mars - Just the Way You Are/Locked Out Of Heaven. Maybe Uptown Funk too but he’s not the lead artist on this song.
BTS - Dynamite/Butter
Camila Cabello - Havana/Señorita
Cardi B - Bodak Yellow/I Like It
Doja Cat - Say So/Kiss Me More
Drake - Hotline Bling/One Dance/God’s Plan
Dua Lipa - Don’t Start Now/Levitating
Ed Sheeran - For many Shape Of You seems like the obvious answer but I think Perfect and Thinking Out Loud could be serious contenders too.
Eminem - Lose Yourself/Without Me/The Real Slim Shady
Imagine Dragons - Thunder/Believer/Radioactive/Demons
Justin Bieber - Baby/Sorry/Love Yourself
Katy Perry - So many contenders for her signature song: I Kissed a Girl/California Gurls/Firework/Roar/Dark Horse
Lady Gaga - Poker Face/Bad Romance
Lil Nas X - Old Town Road/Montero/Industry Baby
Lizzo - Truth Hurts/About Damn Time
Miley Cyrus - Party in the USA/Wrecking Ball/Flowers
Post Malone - Rockstar/Sunflower/Circles
Rihanna - Umbrella/We Found Love/Diamonds
Selena Gomez - Pretty hard to say because she didn’t really have super massive hits or iconic songs. Maybe between Love You Like a Love Song, Good For You and Lose You to Love Me.
Shakira - Whenever, Wherever/Hips Don’t Lie/Waka Waka
Taylor Swift - Love Story/Shake It Off/Blank Space
The Weeknd - Blinding Lights/Starboy

Mainly, I think it's just a phrase journalists and writers use to fancify their writing when writing about artists. To me, a 'signature' song is the one song that, if you asked 100 random people on the street to name the first song that came to mind by that artist, at least 80 of those people would think of the same song. Fine in theory, but in reality far fewer artists have one signature song than some will ever be willing to admit. My issue with the concept has always been that it's more or less taking someone with multiple hits and trying to force them into a pseudo-one-hit-wonder status for some perplexing reason. "Sure, they had a lot of success, but what's the ONE hit we should care to remember?" If we must insist on pinning artists down to just one piece of work, I would argue that 'signature album' makes more sense as a topic. But either way, the idea only works in my mind for acts who were long before most of our times, because the bulk of music (and entertainment in general) has a habit of being forgotten as new generations create their own art and typically draw their influences from more recent sources. At that point 'signature song' is more of a litmus test to see how well a piece of work has stood the test of time. Put another way, if I wanted to settle once and for all what Mariah's 'signature' song or album was, I'd sooner ask 100 gen Alpha third graders (or better yet, 100 Beta kids twenty years from now) than 100 fellow Millennials who experienced Mariah's hits in real time or 100 Zoomers who are randomly stumbling onto whatever track of hers happens to be trending on TikTok this month. A lot of these artists with supposed multiple contenders are not going to have a signature song at all given a few more decades, and that's not me throwing shade; that's just the nature of time. How many of us can name even one popular artist/composer in the US before 1920?

P!nk - Get The Party Started, So What, Just Give Me a Reason
Even though “Just Like a Pill” will always be my signature song from her.

I would think Before He Cheats (obviously) and Jesus Take The Wheel for Carrie Underwood. I guess JTTW more so in the country world but it was a huge debut single for Carrie and still very recognizable to this day.

Billy Joel’s signature hit is Piano Man. But that didn’t make the decade-end!
I’d say his biggest contender for such is Uptown Girl or We Didn’t Start The Fire.

Love To Love You Baby? 🥰 I Feel Love! 💕 divasummer Donna Summer the queen of Disco It's funny y'all mention that, because I knew I answered Donna Summer for this question before. But nope, it was this thread, lol. Same concept! I always have a hard time with Donna Summer, you could make a strong case for "Love To Love You Baby," "I Feel Love," "Bad Girls," "Last Dance," "Hot Stuff," and "She Works Hard For The Money."

What is a “signature song” though? I would say its the song the general public most associates with that artist. And there's no measurement for it. Which is why this topic is great for the "Your Opinion Please" forum. It sparks debate, it gets different answers, it gets people thinking outside of their own bubble.

main ones that come to mind for me are taylor swift, katy perry, rihanna, and lady gaga, as they all have so many songs that are well loved and you can remember them by. most everyone else mentioned in this thread works as well. a notable one is olivia rodrigo despite her short career, because of how hugely popular driver's license and good 4 u were and how popular vampire might end up being.

The OP examples feel very… off
Taylor’s is SIO or Love Story. Anti Hero is not her signature song whatsoever, in fact it gets a fairly tepid response on tour.
Gaga’s is (and will likely always be) Bad Romance, even though PF is her biggest hit.
Britney is one of the few with multiple songs as arguable signatures - BOMT, Oops and Toxic.
Beyoncé’s used to be CIL/ Single Ladies but are now CIL/Halo.
