It's pretty much a generic trap song with a bit of country.  It very easily could have been done and smashed by any number of other artists.  When I first heard it, I immediately thought Beber could have done this circus 2018 or thereabouts and been just as big.  

more surprising to me is how country ate this song up.  I mean it is close to his other stuff but the trap is so heavy,  country has dabbled in trap, but none really blew up.

Also, as double posts anre frowned upon - so not specific to the post above -  easy listening does not mean ballad!!!  It could be a ballad, or any other number of tykes of music focusing on instrumentation and easier vocal styles, than say metal or alt.

Karma is doing well for a post-album single. Most established artists struggle to have post album hits even off of successful albums in this decade. Especially with Cruel Summer eclipsing it.

For anyone that lives in the South/rural America, does Last Night feel as ubiquitous as other 10+ week number ones? I live in an area where country music is not too popular so Last Night doesn’t feel as ‘big’ as songs like As It Was or Blinding Lights, but maybe it’s just a geographically polarizing song.

It actually sounds like pop radio will play. Did you not think of Something Just Like This with the chorus melody? Not to mention it actually has better radio callouts than recent pop hits such as Cupid and Dance The Night.

I mean it is produced by Joey Moi, so any bro-country artists probably had a similar song made before.
Morgan Wallen's You Proof is literally 10-week #1 on country radio and it has an even more obvious trap sound than Last Night.

My fears are now becoming clear, Morgan is now on way joining Mariah and B2M's beautiful tribute song, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's huge crossover Latin song and will eventually might up with Lil Nas X's eventful song about horses. Not to mention all the big 14s that it will tie next week.

a record previously held by a R&B song and a Latin-infused Pop song was broken by a country rap song about horses...then there's the possibility of a pure country song from someone many thought won't be getting another hit after what happened 2 years ago would be breaking the record

I mean, "Old Town Road" at least had good competition from songs that eventually went #1 (e.g. "bad guy" and "Señorita") and didn't (e.g. the "Lover" singles not named "Cruel Summer" and "I Don't Care"), but "Vampire" would be "Last Night"'s first real competition at #1 in a while

Singing about cowboys nad or horses doesn't make a song country,

OTR is a traditional novelty song that incorporates trap elements, and perhaps with a stretch some country elements of the past. Certainly not any modern country elements.

I think there will be enough competition in the next few weeks to keep Morgan from steamrolling the rest of the summer and surpassing OTR. He will probably sneak in another 3 weeks at least but pop radio will drop it once it peaks (August maybe?) and it’s already falling on country radio.

Radio isn't even really what's keeping "Last Night" going on the Hot 100 though. More so what I mean is most of these weeks it would have been #1 even if you took out its airplay completely. Its airplay falling will obviously weaken it some, but as long as its streaming stays as consistent as it has been it will remain a threat for #1.

Just because a song is "bad" doesn't mean it's a bad singles choice. Would I have preferred 'You're On Your Own, Kid' or 'Would've Could've Should've' to be the single following Lavender Have? Absolutely but neither of those songs had the streams Karma had prior to the big push. The only other song that had the legs Karma had was Midnight Rain but Karma is the more upbeat of the two so yeah it makes sense they chose it.

It's a big hit on the Hot 100 so it was a good choice on them to push it, get over it.

Wow, you really won't let this go. How many other artists can produce a multi-week top 10 post album single this late into the era? Karma is upbeat, radio-friendly, and about as "easy-listening" as any of the other songs left on the album, even if some think it's not qualitatively the best (though I think it is). It's not gonna get any better than this, so deal with it lol. Cruel Summer is just a rare occurrence of a song emerging from an artist's past discography.


As for Last Night, it is what it is so I guess we're just gonna have to accept whatever happens. We can only just hope that if not Olivia, other songs will come along to shorten its run as much as possible. Honestly I would be more ok if it was one of his better songs on the album spending 10+ weeks at #1 (such as Everything I Love or '98 Braves). Last Night is just really baffling because it's just a crappy song and I still can't see what's so special about it.

FYI I see they discounted vampire down to 69 cents on iTunes, so that's good. They should continue to give it whatever push it needs since the points are so close!

you know i kinda wonder if big artist teams like Taylor's, Olivia's, etc have like. Their own people given insider numbers to crunch for charts or are they also just like us waiting for twitter predictors to put out their calculations. i'm pretty sure it's the latter but who knows

You're conveniently (or purposefully) leaving out what I said about streams. The three deep cuts that consistently had streams after the album was released were Lavender Haze, Karma, and Midnight Rain. There were others that stuck around longer but those three are the ones that've really stuck a cord with audience. You still haven't argued on why she shouldn't have pushed them aside from your own subjective opinions on them? Do you want another Cruel Summer scenario where the popular deep cuts get pushed years later?

and also You're On Your Own Kid isn't a ballad, and neither is Last Night. Like not even a "mId TeMpO bAlLaD" you claimed in the other thread. And even if I agreed it was a ballad, another ballad being popular doesn't mean she should also go that route. If a trap song was popular, would you have said she push Vigilante Sh!t because it had the most trap elements?

possibly yeah. There’s a live stream counter for artists on spotify so there’s likely the same for other platforms, same goes for digital purchases. So i’m SURE big artists’s teams know how to work all the numbers out/use insight from other predictions from twitter/ use other close sources to see how much more push they feel the song needs, to chart higher

Olivia possibly missing #1 and Uzi debuting only one song in the top 10 are wild with how weak the charts are

It seems Olivia's likely gonna barely win over Morgan here, she actually gained on Spotify today while Morgan lost a little, and she's now slightly ahead on both Apple and Itunes (she's 2nd on both while Morgan is third on both)
Also think Party In The USA has a better shot of re-entering now. It held a lot better compared to most of the other 4th of July songs.
