I remember back in the mid 2010s to like 2018 when music videos on YouTube mattered so MUCH to a song’s performance on the chart, especially for 10 week leaders. But nowadays artists don’t even put out videos for singles, let alone even release tracks as singles.

I like Normani but she has yet to deliver anything close to iconic imo.

I couldn't really think of any iconic recent videos. Sure we all liked the All Too Well short film but did it really take the world by storm like, say, Bad Romance?

Even a visual artist like Beyoncé didn't even bother for her last album.

Maybe something like thank u next and Look What You Made Me Do but those were both well before the pandemic.

the most iconic music videos of the decade are WAP (duh) and Lil Nas X's Montero/Industry Baby double whammy. I'd probably put Olivia Rodrigo's good 4 u right behind them. Doja Cat's visuals are very strong but she hasn't had that iconic moment yet, Kiss Me More comes closest probably. 

2022 was pretty uneventful on that front. with Beyoncé quitting her job in BREAK MY SOUL and all, we didn't get an iconic visual moment. 😭 and the smash hits all had pretty dull music videos.

Yeah, i think the main thing Winston's very early prediction proved (even for as inaccurate as it could be regarding her sales) is that Last Night is still a strong competitor and it never going back to #1 becuase of Olivia is no longer gauranteed.

Granted it's also not gauranteed whether he can even go back to #1, we still have to see how Olivia holds beyond this week and whether Taylor is gonna push for another #1 here (either with Cruel Summer or something from Speak Now), but the chances definitely aren't zero anymore, that's for sure.

I do get your overall point, but I don't think any "took the world by storm" except Gangnam Style and Rebecca Black - Friday, those were the only ones where you would be at work or the pub or with your grandparents and it would be the topic of conversation. Other big/controversial/funny videos like Wrecking Ball, Blurred Lines, Call Me Maybe, etc, were big in the showbiz and pop music world, and maybe would take a school by storm, or have a radio DJ talk about them regularly, but would be easily ignorable if you weren't into current pop music.

We kind of saw from the success of the Closer lyric video and the Sorry and Love Yourself "visualisers" that people were mostly streaming on Youtube to hear a song than to watch a video and click on the first result that comes up.

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet but in regards to Youtube, while it's not as big as it once was but the international scene is still the biggest drivers of music videos - primarily from the Latin and Korean markets. If we're basing the iconography of videos based on views, the convo definitely needs to include foreign language speaking acts.
