The charts’ overall points are so weak right now, that basically any song can re-enter the Top 50 if it has enough points.

I originally thought this was a slow down period that would happen every fall (basically why “Girls Like You” got 7 weeks atop 5 years ago), but the entire 2020s decade so far has showed me that music isn’t be consumed the way it was back in 2010s. I truly doubt Mariah would easily reign at No. 1 every December with December 2012-2017 chart points.

I generally miss the 2010s pop scene, even with all the garbage that came towards the end of it.

Well labels are still useful for putting up initial money for videos (if an artist wants them), for working songs at radio, for general industry connections and support, for promo, etc. Sure there is more of a chance for artists to now directly connect to and worth with their audience, but most things still require a lot of money up front as well as industry connections, and a new artist isn't likely to have those things.

For all of the praise Prince deservedly gets for his methods, it should be noted that he still ended up returning to a major label (his former label in fact). I know things are different in 2023, but my general point is that for as much as artists hate on labels, there are also a lot of things labels do for artists.

It’s the perfect storm with the tour winding down and her stock being at an all time high. I’m betting she’s gonna do promo for 1989 (TV) at the VMAs now. Maybe she’ll open the show with Cruel Summer and close it with a 1989 (Vault Song) that’ll hit harder than Blank Space.
