okay, this is probably embarrassing, but I've never heard of Jimmy Buffett (RIP) and when I first saw the "Margaritaville" title, I thought it was a TV show or something...and I decided to check it out, but it doesn't ring a bell - so suppose I shouldn't try with the other songs since this one is his signature?

I guess this is how my American friends feel when they say they haven't heard of Robbie Williams, who basically marked 90s and 00s in Europe with Take That and his solo work.

I guess for us, who are not from North America (neither Australia), Jimmy Buffett is a complete unknown. I only know his name by reading music articles that referenced him but I do not recognize a single song from him (and I love 70s, 80s and 90s).

This isn't meant to be a rude question at all — just genuine curiosity. Is it because the US is so culturally influential in music, or because Billboard is a mostly reliable arbiter of music stats (for instance I split my time in Nairobi right now and there isn't an easy equivalent of Billboard in Kenya), or is it something else?

Jimmy Buffett was very much a niche artist in the US as well. Doesn't minimize his influence or mean he wasn't beloved by a large group of people. Outside of "Margaritaville," I doubt most people could name a single song of his (and even that one is pushing it with younger generations). But he built a brand and reputation outside of the charts, especially as a touring act. Very similar to acts like Grateful Dead and Phish that have very devoted followings and consistently had successful tours, but never saw much success on the charts.

It's all the things you said. Plus, there's a nostalgia additive in my case (when I was a kid, US and UK ruled the music world and they had the most influential and consistent charts).

Nowadays US and UK are less and less influential musically every year in most parts of the world (Latin America, Asia and Africa). The smaller markets now have charts (Spotify charts for every country).

I mean, if you like mainstream music (which is mostly American...and British artists), numbers and stats, Billboard is kinda the first station for you. It's the biggest chart in the world, plus there's a long history behind it, and that's really important for chart watchers.
It's also interesting to see a different perspective, when you have songs like "Asereje" and "Dragostea Din Tei" that were THE hits of the 2000s in Europe and failed to chart or enter the top 40 on the Hot 100, but you've never heard of some Hot 100 10+ weeks at #1 songs until you discovered Billboard.

Also, basically every big artist American or not, will post about their Billboard achievements on social media, and if you're a fan you'll follow it too.

I follow the British, Canadian and Australian charts too, but unfortunately there are no active threads for those on Pulse.

Because charts are interesting.

I've long gone past the mindset that what's on the charts is the best music but even as I listen to more and more indie and underground music, there's still an interest to look at what's successul in movies and music. And occassionaly, there's interesting stories to tell. In music this year, it's the rise of country and the success of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, in movies its the success of Barbenheimer and the fatigue of superhero movies.

He was probably a bigger chart artist than the charts of the 70s and 80s would indicate. Consider this: From 1974 to 1994, his heyday, he had only one top ten album. From 1994 until 2020, after the conversion to Soundscan, he racked up 11 top ten albums (including a number one in 2004!). If Soundscan had existed in the 70s and 80s Jimmy Buffett would have many more top ten albums and his singles would likely have done better too.

I've seen Phish twice and I can attest to this. Huge following, zero chart presence. But sold out tours for decades.
